Spending 3 days in Madrid is a perfect way to fill an exciting weekend away. From delicious tapas to countless museums to vibrant bars and clubs, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained in Spain’s capital. Here’s how to plan out your time to make the most of everything Madrid has to offer.
On your first morning of your 3 days in Madrid, get oriented by wandering around the city’s main square, Puerta del Sol. This square is where six major roads in Spain officially start; make sure to take a look at the monument on the ground that marks Kilometre Zero, as well as the clock which is the main feature of many Spaniards’ New Year celebrations.
Spend the afternoon getting stuck into one of the galleries that make up Madrid’s ‘Golden Triangle of Art’: Museo Reina Sofía, Museo del Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museo all host incredible collections of Spanish and international works. From Goya to Dali to Picasso’s infamous Guernica, Madrid is host to plenty of iconic pieces you don’t want to miss.
For your first evening in Madrid, head to Templo de Debod, an Ancient Egyptian temple that was gifted to Spain in the 1960s, which visitors can now explore for free. Set on a hilltop, it’s also the perfect place to take in the city as the sun goes down. Next, go to Takos al Pastor for a delicious late-night dinner of tacos and margaritas. Don’t be put off by the queue; the cheap prices and generous portions more than make up for the potentially long wait.
Another gallery that’s definitely worth a visit in Madrid is the Sorolla Museum. Located in Spanish impressionist Sorolla’s former house, the gallery has a vast collection of the artist’s work and a small but exquisite garden attached. Set aside a couple of hours to explore everything on offer. Then, wander over to Churreria Santa Teresa for a delicious snack of crispy, sugary churros fresh from the fryer, dipped in hot melted chocolate.
As well as plenty of sights within the main city, Madrid’s surrounding countryside is also worth a visit. Try an afternoon hike to Mount Abantos, accessible by bus or taxi from Madrid. You’ll likely encounter local wildlife and after trekking for a couple of hours, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views.
For your second evening of 3 days in Madrid, a night out is on the cards. If you’re a reggaeton fan, try Kapital which spreads over seven floors and as well as reggaeton, hosts a cocktail bar, a karaoke room and has acrobats swinging over the dance floor. If techno is more your scene, check out Mondo which hosts the best DJs Madrid has to offer.
If the night before has left you feeling rough, nurse your headache with a coffee and brunch at Coco House, where you’ll find a delicious array of options to set you up for the day. Spend the rest of the morning checking out Madrid’s vintage shops, from Magpie to Alphaville to LOOP Vintage, and see if you can find a souvenir to add to your wardrobe.
Next, head to the magnificent El Retiro park, which has 350 acres to explore. Created in the 1630s, the park boasts a rooftop terrace where you can relax with a drink and enjoy stunning views, a giant greenhouse named the Crystal Palace which regularly hosts exhibitions, a rose garden, and countless statues and monuments. You can also rent a boat and spend the afternoon paddling on the pond.
For your last evening following 3 days in Madrid, it’s time for a delicious tapas dinner to round off your trip. Try Casa Revuelta for its infamous battered cod or head to Casa González for exquisite pairings of wine, cheese and charcuterie. This tapas bar doubles as a shop, giving you the option to buy some cheese to squeeze into your suitcase if you want to bring the taste of Madrid home with you. Next, go to Cafe Populart if jazz is your jam or head to El Sotano if you’re a fan of indie and rock music. Soak up the buzzing atmosphere and enjoy the live music while you have a final drink in the city.
