Wales is inextricably tied to its past as a mining nation, a history which is explored in the immersive museum at Big Pit. The coal museum is housed in one of the old mines, so you get to don a hard helmet and descend underground in conditions similar to the miners of decades gone by. Before going below ground, visit the Mining Galleries where you can see all the kinds of technology used for extracting coal and tour the historic buildings that were frequented by miners. Then you can take the underground tour, where you drop 90 metres down a mineshaft with a miner leading the way through all the old routes that they would have followed in work each day.
