North West Coast Path: Industrial and Adventurous

Stretching from the Scottish Borders down to Wales, it’s already clear (even to those who haven’t actually visited this region) just how beautiful the North West Coast Path is, sandwiched between two gorgeous countries known for their natural beauty. But this region of England is no stranger to outdoor adventure, home to the Lake District, Whitehaven and Piel Castle. Not much of this section is open yet, but each year more and more sections of the England Coast Path will be open to the public with the view of joining up to create one huge trail!

Walk: From Maryport to Whitehaven

Days: 2

Distance: 24.5km

Grade: Gentle

Workington

A simple little walk along the gems of the North West coast, this trail covers the maritime, industrial and social history of Maryport, Workington and Whitehaven, where you can also learn about Roman times and go for a bit of fossil hunting in Parton Bay! With dramatic cliff views and coastal lookout’s, you’ll get the best of both worlds as you learn about ancient market towns and industrial ports, while also benefiting from beautiful seaside scenery and quaint coastal town vibes. 

The walk has opened up further now to stretch from Allonby to Whitehaven, making this long West Cumbrian path 35km (22 miles).

Walk: Walney Island

Days: 3

Distance: 34km

Grade: Gentle

A single circular route around Walney Island near Barrow-in-Furness takes you on a spectacular wildlife wander. From grey seals in Walney’s Nature Reserve to birds, wintering waders, wildfowl and natterjack toads in the salt marshes. You might even be lucky enough to spot some roe deer or porpoises! Wildlife isn’t the only thing you’ll find on this gorgeous island walk, with ocean views across to Morecambe Bay and the wilderness landscapes of Coniston Fells and Black Combe.
