7 Sustainable Items to Pack for Your Family Holiday

This post was written by JoJo Maman Bébé, a leading parent and baby brand in the UK.

When you’re travelling with little ones, the contents of your suitcase probably look very different from the days before the children came along. Who knew they needed so much stuff even for just a night away?

It can be stressful enough making sure you’ve packed everything for every situation that could arise – but what do you do if you’re trying to pack the most convenient items and be as eco-conscious as possible? Luckily, more and more products are being made sustainably, meaning you can do your bit for the environment while having access to the products that actually perform too. So, with this in mind, we’ve rounded up this list of sustainable items that are both travel-friendly and kind to the planet for your next family trip.

The 4-in-1 Jacket

Depending on where you’re off to, temperatures can vary pretty drastically from day to night and it can be hard to know what to pack to cover all eventualities. That’s where the 4-in-1 Jacket comes in. Made from around 17 plastic bottles, this genius jacket is an all-weather wonder. Whether you need something lightweight, waterproof or extra cosy (or a combination), the two layers can be worn separately or together, letting you adjust it for varying weather.

The Bamboo Plasters

Tumbles are part of everyday life if you have little ones whether at home or away, so it’s a good idea to pack some plasters and a few other first-aid essentials. However, most plasters are made from plastic and won’t break down naturally. Consider switching to Patch plasters, which are made from 100% natural bamboo fibre and enriched with coconut oil. Not only are they an eco-friendly option, but the gentle, natural materials are also hypoallergenic and sensitive skin-friendly too.

The Waterproof Salopettes

If your family is heading to the slopes for the last of this year’s snow, make sure your little skier is equipped with the right gear. JoJo salopettes are waterproof to keep snow and rain out, feature a super cosy fleece lining for extra warmth, and have an adjustable length, making them a ski essential. What’s more, they are made from 100% recycled polyester, helping to save unwanted plastics from going to landfill.

The Baby Wipes

Many parents have been scaling back their use of baby wipes in favour of more planet-friendly reusable cloths, but it can be less convenient keeping up this habit when you’re abroad. Consider this compromise; a pack of biodegradable wipes from My Happy Planet, which are made from plant fibres, making them 100% biodegradable and plastic-free.

The Changing Bag

Stylish, functional and sustainable, the Babymel Georgi Eco convertible changing bag is an essential for eco-conscious families whether at home or away. Not only is it made from recycled plastic bottles, it’s available in a chic pale aqua blue which both mums and dads will be more than happy to wear. Its convertible style means it can be worn as a backpack for a hands-free option, or over the shoulder – plus it’s compact yet roomy, making it perfect for the airport and day trips.

The Packaway Rain Jacket

Even abroad, dry weather isn’t always guaranteed, which is why it’s a good idea to pack a lightweight waterproof layer. This rain jacket packs away into its own integral bag, meaning it takes up minimal space in your suitcase or backpack. Plus, it’s made from 100% recycled polyester, helping to turn waste fabrics into something new and fabulous.

The Toy Lead

A dropped favourite toy can be very upsetting for little ones at the best of times, but when it happens in an airport or holiday destination, the chances of being reunited with it are even slimmer. By using a toy lead – which has been made from the factory off-cuts of children’s clothing – you can keep your child’s toy attached to a buggy or car seat so it’s always safely by their side.
