Team Travels: Cornwall

Whenever one of our intrepid staff heads off on a trip somewhere, we tell them to keep their eyes and ears open for all the best stuff on offer so we can pass those lovely little local insights onto you. Our SEO specialist Cat recently spent a bank holiday weekend in Cornwall, and once she was back in the office she told us all about the experience. It sounded so appealing we thought you’d all want to head there once you’ve read about it!

Tell us where you’ve been…

I made last minute arrangements for a trip to North Cornwall. Having lived in the UK for 6 years I’ve often thought about visiting and I’m surprised it’s taken me so long to get there! I expected it to be picturesque but even so, I don’t think I was quite prepared for how rugged and dramatic the scenery would be. (There’s lots of walking to do if that’s your thing and if so, don’t forget your walking boots and a poncho in case the weather gets rainy – we are in England, after all.)

What was the highlight of the trip?

The sunset from Crackington Haven was by far the most amazing experience! We’d chanced upon this small coastal village at just the right time to admire the sunset – a breath-taking sky on fire set against the slate-black rocks. People gather here to enjoy the stunning views from Cornwall’s highest cliff at 735 feet, Pencarrow Point.

What and where was your best foodie moment?

On the recommendation of our host, we spent an evening at The Rising Sun Inn. Truly a Cornish hidden gem! With menus changed daily, the chefs at Rising Sun create delicious dishes cooked with local Cornish produce, fresh and straight from the fishermen and artisanal food markers. Don’t be fooled by the humble exterior – once in, it’s a cosy and welcoming atmosphere where you can enjoy a local brew before being shown to your table.

Any stand-out traditions or cultural observations made in the area where you stayed?

We visited Boscastle, a small and picturesque natural harbour and village that was badly damaged by flash floods in August 2004. It has now been restored to its former glory and is considered the most romantic village in Cornwall. Even so, there is a bustling atmosphere about the place, with local events happening all year round. We had a laugh playing traditional games like smashing crockery and dunking a poor local man, with the proceeds going to the restoration of the local church. While there make sure that you also sample some of the local treats – I had a delicious scoop of Rose and Cardamom Ice Cream from Helsett’s Farm!

For anyone travelling to Cornwall, what can’t they miss?

Get on the road and explore the area! The medieval fortification Tintagel Castle is a must for history buffs! You can explore the myth of King Arthur and enjoy dramatic views over the rugged North Cornwall coast…  or you can get silly playing with the knights’ armour in the souvenir shop like we did.
