Team Travels: Scotland

We’re a bunch of travel-fans here at Oliver’s Travels (shocker!), so whenever any members of our team go on adventures near or far, we always pester them for all the details as soon as they get back. Our Digital Content Executive, Alice, just popped up to bonny Scotland for a few days. Here’s her account of her Highlands road trip.

Tell us where you’ve been…

I caught the train up to Glasgow, picked up a hire car and spent three days trying to jam in as many incredible Scottish landscapes as I possibly could. I drove down through Dumfries and Galloway one day and saw sights along the way like the Sweetheart Abbey. I then made my way up north via Stirling. We looped around seeing Loch Lomond, Loch Awe, Falloch Falls, Luss, Inveraray and a few more incredible and snowy sights and towns.

What was the highlight of the trip?

The highlight for me was definitely coming around a mountain near Callander and seeing nothing but snow. As an Australian, snow was a new sight for me so my inner three-year-old came out in a big way!

What and where was your best foodie moment?

After hours of driving, we stumbled into Inveraray, a gorgeous loch-side town that felt like it was straight out of a storybook. We stopped into a café called Brambles Bistro for some local chowder and beers to warm ourselves before we hit the snowy road again. It was super homely and yum, just what we needed. Overall the Scottish food wasn’t my kind of thing – lots of deep-fried-ness that is really only enjoyable for a day. However, we enjoyed a haggis pie that was delicious!

Any stand-out traditions or cultural observations made in the area you stayed in?

Everyone in Scotland seemed incredibly friendly. Everywhere we went people were so warm and open to chat which is always a welcome change to big old London town.

For anyone travelling to Scotland, what can’t they miss?

The higher up into the mountains you can go, the better. I’d definitely recommend getting a hire car and driving as much as possible. Every turn was better than the last. But make sure you take a GPS so you don’t spend an hour driving down a tiny road with no way out other than turning back around! Stirling is a beautiful town that you will probably get close to anyway if you’re passing through Glasgow or Edinburgh – it’s worth a stop for a cuppa for sure!
