Marlborough Tavern, Bath

This historic city is deservedly a World Heritage Site, known for its appearances in literary classics such as The Canterbury Tales and Persuasion. After a morning spent marvelling at the city’s well-preserved Georgian architecture, stop for lunch at the Marlborough Tavern. Simple but well-cooked fare includes 28 day aged ‘Ruby Red’ steaks and duck liver parfait with red onion marmalade and crostinis.

The Pony and Trap, Chew Magna

Regularly voted among the best gastropubs in the UK, no foodie’s visit to this part of the world is complete without a small detour to the Pony and Trap in the village of Chew Magna. This 200-year-old country pub was awarded a Michelin star in 2011 in recognition of its excellent menu, which uses fresh local ingredients and contains hearty options such as ‘local venison, ox tongue, veal sweetbreads salsify and turnip tops,’ all cooked to perfection. Accompany your meal with a glass of wine from the extensive list.
