Mykonos may be the Cyclades’ star-studded party island, but there’s more to do here than just hit the clubs. Look beyond the maze-like core of Mykonos Town and the icing-sugar beaches to discover its archaeological wonders, mythological islands, contemporary art galleries and cultural experiences. Here are the top things to do in Mykonos.
Mykonos is peppered with beautiful churches, but the standout has to be Panagia Paraportiani, which looks like it could have been carved from ice. This orthodox church in Chora, also known as ‘Our Lady of the Side Gate’ for its position next to the entrance to the old castle, is the most photographed on the island.
Mykonos Town’s web of cobbled streets is lined with enticing boutiques. Try Mavrogenous Street for art, Matoyianni Street for designer threads and unique local designs, or Little Venice for some of the best boutiques and jewellery in Mykonos.
You can’t miss the iconic five Windmills of Kato Mili, which loom over a small hill above Little Venice. No longer in use, they nod to the island’s once-thriving wheat industry, which died out in the early 20th century. This little corner is also dotted with some of the best bars in Mykonos – perfect Instagram fodder as you enjoy a sunset cocktail or two.
An underwater playground, Mykonos has a mix of walls, caves and wrecks – perfect for diving. Two of the best beaches in Mykonos for sea-based exploring are Paradise and Kalafatis; check out GoDive Mykonos and Mykonos Diving Center for lessons and tours.
Steeped in Greek mythology, Delos is the mythical birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. Take a boat trip to the island and you’ll be transported back 5,000 years as you browse the remnants of temples, public squares and amphitheatres. There’s also an archaeological museum displaying excavated pieces.
Hop aboard a classic yacht and sail along the island’s southern coast, from Agios Ioannis to Elia via Dragonisi Island. You’ll snorkel and swim at some of the best beaches in Mykonos along the way before feasting on smoky barbecued fare back on board for lunch.
Culture buffs should duck into Dio Horia, a contemporary art gallery curated by the esteemed Marina Vranopolou. Its jam-packed annual programme spans exhibitions, events, pop-ups and residencies for emerging talent. After browsing the works, linger over a drink at the rooftop bar, where you may be able to meet current artists-in-residence. A couple of other places to visit in Mykonos for art include the quirky Rarity Gallery and Art & Soul Gallery.
The Archaeological Museum is brimming with artefacts, which were mainly discovered in 1898 in Rhenia (a small island to the southwest of Mykonos). Among the vases, jewellery and sculptures, look out for the club-wielding, headless statue of Heracles, adorned only in lion skin and dating back to the 2nd century BC.
One of the best things to do in Mykonos is take a traditional cooking lesson, helping you to learn about the culture and traditions of Greek cuisine. Try Mykonian Spiti, where you’ll spend a day at the home of a local family, picking ingredients from the kitchen garden to transform into dishes like tzatziki, orzo pasta, and spinach pie – washed down with ouzo, of course.
