Step back in time

Those who love their history are in luck – there’s plenty to feed your thirst for knowledge in Lesbos. The Temple of Aphrodite is the oldest archaeological site on offer, built during the early 5th century BC and once considered a sanctuary. For ancient ruins with a side of sea views, head to the Castle of Mytilene, which is spread across 60 acres and overlooks the Aegan Sea. 

And if you prefer your monuments to be surrounded by pine trees, the Castle of Molyvos is situated on a hill across many levels, and even hosts festivals and concerts in the summer months. 

4×4 adventure

There are five thermal spring sources to choose from in Lesbos, allowing you to get more than your fair fill of freshwater bathing. They’re all said to be a gift from Hephaestus, the god of fire, which would explain why they reach a toasty temperature of 40 degrees Celsius! However, the water’s superpower isn’t necessarily its warmth – these springs are enriched with soothing minerals that many claim to have healed their chronic ailments. 

Visit the Petrified Forest

Made up of fossilised trees and plants that are almost 20 million years old, the Petrified Forest is perhaps the most unique natural wonder of Lesbos. It takes up over 150 square km, with the flourishing flora and fauna giving visitors an idea of how the environment would have looked originally. Once you’ve had a walk around, take yourself over to The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in Sigri and check out the permanent and temporary exhibitions on show.

Try new foods 

Greek cuisine is beloved around the world for its vibrant flavours and colours, drizzling olive oil across everything from a slice of freshly baked bread to a bean-packed salad. Grab-and-go diners will love gyros – grilled meat wrapped in pita and often stuffed with French fries for extra crunch!
