Cartmel Mansion is a private paradise for a spot of switch off, to celebrate something special with your favourite friends or to bring the generations together. Sleeping up to twenty two guests, enjoying sensational, sophisticated entertainment spaces and fantastic landscaped grounds, the manor house is an oasis of gracious and glorious living on the Southern edge of the Lake District National Park. It is a haven for hunkering down with one of the world’s most revered wildernesses on your doorstep. This quintessentially English retreat offers luxury, comfort, charm, character and beauty in lavish abundance. There are plenty of treats in store including a recently converted cellar with a large wine cellar, snug, jukebox, pinball machine and a restored Coca-Cola machine, a cinema room, a smart drawing room that takes you back to the days of yesteryear, a superb dining room, domestic and commercial kitchens and there are even ‘Cheese’ and ‘Whisky’ room.
This magnificent period property offers swagger and style in big doses. It was originally built for a wealthy landowner in 1815, became the household and surgery of a doctor in 1911 and was purchased by the current owners in 2004. Since then, it has undergone substantial renovations to become a five star, eleven bedroom wonder where you can relax, rejuvenate or even hold a corporate conference. There are nine superb, opulent bedroom suites in the main house and two separate lodges in the grounds. The bedrooms are all inspired and named by the owners’ experiences of some of the best hotels around the world. Every aspect of your stay will be in the capable hands of the on-site house manager, who can either stay discreetly in the background or be at your beck and call, as you desire. Cartmel Mansion has excellent connections with both Irini Tzortzoglou, the UK Masterchef Champion of 2019 and Martin Frickel, a private fine dining chef and food entrepreneur for your catering requirements for special events.
From the moment that you arrive at the grand entrance hall, you will fully appreciate the grandeur of what is to come. Magnificent reception rooms radiate from here offering you the chance to mingle in sophisticated, serene spaces or slide away and escape. Many of the reception spaces offer large open fires for a crackling atmosphere. The drawing room boasts exceptional furnishings including a fabulous Great Grandfather clock and a huge bookcase from the local manufacturer, Gillow’s of Lancaster. Within the drawing room there are four separate seating areas, ideal for intimate conversations, quiet reads or large get togethers in front of the fire. The traditional dining room is perfect for celebratory meals or hearty breakfasts before heading out to the area’s spectacular landscapes. During the day, the room can double up as a meeting room with full conference capability if required. The cellars are fabulous spaces including a beautifully furnished snug with a smart television with Netflix, a fun jukebox, a restored pinball machine and recently restored 1950’s Coca-Cola machine. A gorgeous open fire takes centre stage, surrounded by sumptuous sofas. It is the place to unwind and get your dancing shoes on. The cinema room offers a giant ninety inch screen and is especially popular with teens. There is no better place to watch the big games or your favourite movie when you can sit is ultra comfy leather chairs. There are two kitchens at Haythornthwaite Manor. The first, a domestic kitchen from Smallbone of Devizes is a culinary masterpiece with top notch Miele appliances and an Aga. The commercial kitchen next door is perfect for large dinner parties prepared by yourselves or outside staff. Martin Gott, one of the exclusive partners helped to design a Cheese Room where you can try out delicious cheeses. On request, Martin will come and give talks and if you are really lucky he may be amenable to you taking a tour of his farm just over the hill where he keeps the sheep and goats that produce his famous cheeses. In addition to all of these fabulous spaces, there is an Orangery with relaxed seating for alfresco dining from the barbecue or a quiet read.
