Northborough Manor Gatehouse holds a wonderful location set within beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside close to its border with Lincolnshire in the village of Northborough. While guests will enjoy a tranquil escape, a wide variety of amenities and attractions can be found in the cathedral city of Peterborough or the nearby town Stamford, both just a fifteen-minute drive away.
The Grade I listed Gatehouse makes an entirely unique place to stay, steeped in history the building was used as a garrison by Oliver Cromwell during the Civil War. The home has been lovingly and carefully modernised in order to seamlessly combine its original charm and character including intricate stonework, hand carved 700-year-old beams, and cannon holes with all the modern amenities guests could possibly need. The interiors are beautiful throughout with pieces of antique furniture and artwork dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. There is plenty of living space for the whole group to socialise in, the drawing room is cosy and the perfect place to unwind in the evenings, the fully-equipped kitchen boasts all the tools you could possibly need to whip up a delicious meal while the dining room complete with its 18th century Gillows table makes the perfect place to the whole group to gather and discuss the highlights of the day. Northborough Manor Gatehouse can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests across four well-appointed bedrooms. There are three double rooms each boasting en-suite facilities, while the twin bedroom can make use of the luxurious family bathroom.
Outside, the courtyard makes the perfect setting for a spot of al fresco dining on a Summer evening. The Orchard makes an excellent space for a game of croquet while the Italian Garden is ideal for relaxing in.
What you should know…
- Given the age of the house, it is not well suited to those travelling with young children. There are trip hazards and all of the floors are hard while the house is also furnished entirely with antique furniture
- Due to the house being Grade 1 listed, it is impossible to make it wheelchair accessible. We regret that there is no accommodation on the ground floor.

Great house
We had a great time there. The house is very nice and the hosts were extremely nice and helpful. The house is nicely positioned.

A rare and great find!
Northborough Manor Gatehouse is a rare and great find. We stayed for 10 days and had a amazing time. The House is clean, has everything you need for a stay and the hosts were more than happy to assist with anything further required. On top of this you’re staying in a property that has huge historical and heritage significance in England.

We loved it!
The property is amazing and steeped with history. Our hosts were delightful, attentive and helpful. As 2 families together, the kitchen space afforded a great base to eat, drink & talk. The beds were comfortable and overall we loved it.

Fantastic
We had a fantastic family stay for a week over Easter. The historic property and gardens were exquisite, the Gatehouse very comfortable and the owners, who live in the main 14th Century house opposite, were exceptionally welcoming, and helpful, taking time to talk us through the amazing history and architecture of the place. Couldn’t have asked for more.

Perfect weekend retreat
Stayed here in a party of 7 and it was great value for money.
The kitchen/dining area was perfect for socialising and the kitchen itself was ideal for cooking large meals in a group.
The bedrooms were all good sizes and the three en-suites were a bonus. Showers were fantastic.
The owners were incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home as soon as we got there.
If you get good weather, the outside spaces are fantastic.
Could not recommend Northborough Manor Gatehouse more.

We would definitely happily stay there again!
We found this a perfect property for four couples celebrating a 40th birthday - providing surroundings which amply justified ‘dressing for dinner’ at the grand 18th century table in the dining room or settling around the even older kitchen table for more informal meals.
The hosts were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the amazing history of the property and their love and care for the buildings was clear in the attention given to making the gatehouse a very comfortable place to stay – good quality bathrooms, beds, towels and linen and plenty of crockery and cutlery.
Our late September visit still allowed some evenings to enjoy a drink by the shade of the medlar in the courtyard or a wander through the Italian garden and orchard. Sadly we failed to fit in a game of badminton or croquet, equipment for which was provided!
We all enjoyed walking the fens and visiting diverse nearby places of interest, including Stamford, Flag Fen Bronze age settlement, Barnsdale gardens and Clipsham Yew Tree Avenue. We just didn’t have time in our ten days to visit more!
Three couples had cars but the fourth travelled by train from London – a swift easy journey. We met them from the station but either the regular bus service or a cab would have been quick and relatively cheap ways to get to the house, so a stay without cars could work just as well. Indeed in the generally flat terrain, bicycles could have been the perfect form of transport!
We would definitely happily stay there again!
