The grand country mansion house, Ross-shire Hall is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion with family or friends. This incredible Grade II listed building, dating back to the 1700’s, has been brought back to life by the current owners and offers luxurious comforts as well as characterful nods to its fascinating past. It is documented in the village records that President Franklin D Roosevelt and Eleanor spent part of the honeymoon staying at the house. This magical building stands proud in six acres of glorious gardens and woodland near the village of Evanton in the Scottish Highlands. Its location is perfect for day trips to the Cairngorms, Caithness and Sutherland, the west coast of Scotland, the beautiful Black Isle and the gentle shores of Loch Ness. It is a great base for exploring the popular NC500 route while offering total tranquility and seclusion. This unspoiled area of natural beauty is home to much wildlife and you are likely to see pheasant and deer in the garden and buzzards and red kites flying above. There are opportunities for fishing, shooting, cycling, horse riding, watersports, white water rafting, quad biking, dolphin spotting and sea kayaking. You can visit whisky and gin distilleries, enjoy some serious fine dining and most of all, you can rest, recuperate and indulge yourselves in this oasis of gracious and glorious living deep within the Scottish Highlands.
As soon as you start your drive through the well-tended grounds of Ross-shire Hall and approach this beautiful building with its turrets, grand outer staircase and immense character, you know you are in for a treat. With seven beautifully presented bedroom suites, three reception rooms and a large kitchen, Ross-shire Hall is wonderful for family and friend get togethers. You will relax in the atmospheric, panelled drawing room in front of a blazing fire, dine like royalty and dive deep into slumber in the crispest of cottons and softest of duvets. There are many special touches including fresh flowers throughout the house, magazines and books, board games and toys for the little ones and organic Scottish toiletries in the bathrooms. Discreet, complimentary daily housekeeping is a joy and there are some excellent catering options. For an additional charge, the owner chef Graham is happy to cook for you by prior arrangement using delicious fresh local ingredients. You can choose from waitressed formal dinners for special occasions, a full week of catering, traditional Scottish breakfasts, picnics or meals ready to be served by yourselves at the end of a busy day. You can also pre-order a drinks package for your holiday. Please just enquire at the time of booking for further information. It is easy to see why Ross-shire Hall has been awarded five stars from the Scottish Tourist Board for more than twelve years. Ross-shire Hall is a fabulously unique venue for any holiday or special occasion.
The outdoors steps take you to the entrance hall and living spaces on the first floor. The drawing room is the perfect place for pre-dinner drinks or a late-night dram of whisky in front of the fire. With panelling all around, gorgeous window seats and sumptuous sofas, it is a great spot. The dining area is also lovely with plenty of character and classic styling. Next to the drawing room is the sitting room, a lovely space where you can disappear with a pot of tea and the Sunday newspapers. On the lower ground floor, you will discover the third reception room where you can relax watching a movie on Netflix or playing family games. The kitchen is absolutely fabulous with both an Aga and a range cooker. It is perfect for self-catering or else you can let someone else take over and enjoy your break away from the oven. There is a handy breakfast table too.
There are four bedrooms on the upper floor and three on the lower ground floor. They all enjoy superior super king-size beds, four of which can be set up as twin beds. In addition, there are a number of cots and fold-away beds for young children that can be used. Every bedroom enjoys its own en-suite bathroom. The bedrooms are elegant, spacious havens where you will enjoy sumptuous furnishings and beautiful garden views. Some enjoy neutral decor while others enjoy bright colour pop feature walls that match the rugs on the floor and other warm accessories. Each bedroom enjoys its own character and every guest will be delighted with their room. The bathrooms are beautifully maintained, with a mix of baths and showers.
Ross-shire Hall sits in six acres of fabulous gardens and woodland. With fragrant, colourful borders, lush lawns and towering, ancient trees, there are so many beautiful spots for picnics, family games and quiet moments with your holiday books. There is a gas barbecue for alfresco dining and the only noise you may hear is the soft hoot of an owl.

Luxury self-catering holiday accommodation in the Highlands
Get ready to embark on a whimsical journey to the Scottish Highlands with Oliver's Travels, where fabulous, characterful homes await in this rugged and enchanting slice of northern Scotland. Mist-shrouded mountains, deep-blue lochs and ancient castles are the name of the game. It is like stepping into a fantasy novel, but with fewer dragons and more kilts!
First up on our Highland hit-list is Ben Nevis, standing at a whopping 1,345 metres. Climbers and hikers worldwide flock to its trails, ready to conquer the mountain and be rewarded with the most incredible views. If you are not up for an epic uphill battle, fear not! The Great Glen Way offers a more chilled stroll along the Caledonian Canal, connecting Fort William and Inverness. It is like a leisurely stroll through nature, with bonus canal vibes.
Now, who hasn't heard of Loch Ness? Home to historic castles such as Urquhart Castle, this legendary spot invites you to channel your inner detective and search for Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. Nessie might be shy, but the views are anything but! You will enjoy ruins, mystery and just maybe, a friendly monster waving from the depths.
Inverness, the unofficial Highland capital, is where historic charm meets modern pizzazz. The River Ness weaves through the city, tickling the feet of Victorian buildings. It is a sophisticated dance of old and new. You can stroll along the riverbanks, explore Inverness Castle and soak up the local vibes at the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. Heading west is the hidden treasure of Plockton which boasts landscapes so picturesque, you will think you are in a watercolour painting. Whitewashed cottages add a touch of charm and the sheltered bay is the perfect spot for daydreaming. You can take a boat trip to nearby islands or just bask in the coastal serenity. In Fort Augustus, where the Caledonian Canal plays meet and greet with Loch Ness, boating and water-based antics abound. The locks of Fort Augustus are like a watery staircase, a fascinating engineering marvel that turns boat journeys into a spectacle.
The Highland Folk Museum near Newtonmore invites you to step back in time. This living history museum spills the secrets with reconstructed buildings, costumed interpreters and demonstrations of age-old crafts. Another wonder, Eilean Donan Castle is a real-life fairytale fortress perched on a tiny island where three lochs have a meet-up. It is so postcard-perfect that even Hollywood could not resist its charm. History buffs and Instagram enthusiasts, this one is for you!
Of course, we cannot forget the whisky. The Highlands are the holy grail for whisky aficionados. Glenlivet and Glenfiddich distilleries open their doors for guided tours, where you will learn the magic behind crafting Scotch whisky. Sip, swirl and savour – it is a Highland happy hour!
Whether you are scaling castles, conquering peaks, fishing, boating or just lounging by a loch, the Scottish Highlands invites you to a land where nature and history come together in a brilliant way. It is a timeless tale that leaves you in awe. Step into the magic as adventure awaits!
Ah, bonnie Scotland! A wild and beautiful part of the world, where you can explore the rugged highlands or enjoy the colour and vibrancy of cultural capitals like Edinburgh and Glasgow.
But how do you know you’re getting the very best out of your trip? That’s where we come in. If you’ve had a browse through our range of luxury cottages and castles in Scotland, you’ll know there’s some great places to stay, but to find all the great things to do, see and eat you’ll need our handy Scotland travel guide – so read on and enjoy!
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesRoss-shire Hall is perfect for family get togethers. With seven bedrooms plus cots and fold-out beds, there is room for several families. The owners of the house supply many toys and games for children. The television room with Neflix access is wonderful. Children can settle down to a movie of their choice at the end of a busy day. There is a library filled with books for all ages. Also, the gardens are sublime. They are perfect for fun family games.
Families that love the outdoors enjoy the scenery and the activities available in the Scottish Highlands. The rivers provide much fun with canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boat trips. You can also take boat trips to watch sunsets and to look out for dolphins. Ecoventures is a brilliant company that offers super cool, high speed, offshore RIB trips to enjoy the unique scenery, wildlife and history of the area. The trips leave from Cromarty on the easternmost tip of The Black Isle with its imposing cliff coastline. It is home to a resident colony of Bottlenose dolphins. Most families take the two hour Wildlife Watch trip which heads out into the Inner Moray Firth. As well as the dolphins, you are likely to see Common and Grey seals, porpoises and occasionally a Minke whale.
There are some beautiful beaches to visit including Dornoch and those on The Black Isle. Dornoch Beach is stunning with soft sands, lots of dunes and shallow water. The beach extends all the way to the village of Embo in the north. Dornoch itself is a lovely historic town with a fantastic cathedral to visit. Cromarty Beach is also gorgeous with lots of sand and the odd dolphin out at sea to spot. It is a great beach for fossil hunting too.
In Inverness there are many family friendly attractions including the castle which overlooks the River Ness, the Ness Islands Walk and Railway, the Inverness Ice Centre, the Inverness Botanic Gardens, Frankie and Lolas indoor play centre and Whin Park with its boating lake. The Landmark Forest Adventure Park is always popular with its rope courses, playgrounds and exhibits. Cawdor Castle and Gardens is another favourite with its well-preserved castle, beautiful gardens and its 9-hole golf course.

20 years
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The house was a complete renovation for us as it was falling down when we bought it 20 years ago. It's a captivating house that we fell in love with in a really beautiful spot with views over the Cromarty Firth.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
We have had some famous artists and musicians stay over the years, but we’d never name names, everyone is a VIP at Ross-shire Hall.
What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
This is a hard question... no one is difficult, everyone is just different.
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Sample the Whisky, visit a distillery for a tour and tasting. Local distillery Glenmorangie have fascinating tours and some very special whisky.
Really eat?
Well, I would have to say here. Have Graham cook for you, choose from great local ingredients and nobody has to drive home!
Really see?
Visit the black rock gorge, just a short walk from the house and such a natural beauty on our doorstep.
Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
The Highlands of Scotland is really beautiful in the Spring and the Autumn, the changing seasons, the great outdoors. Visit Loch Glass it's a hidden gem just up the road from Ross-shire Hall.

We'll be abck to explore more
We have just come home after a 10 day stay at Ross-shire Hall. We were a family of 9 and all had an amazing time from start to finish, we didn’t want to go home. The house is beautiful, the grounds and views are stunning. The hosts have thought of everything you might need to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Fresh flowers in every room that we’re renewed halfway through the stay. Housekeeping was spotless. Games provided for the children and the adults enjoyed them too whilst sitting around a grand fireplace. We had the best time exploring the area, so much to do, we only covered a handful of things, we will be looking come again to explore more and will be booking to stay at Ross-shire Hall.

The perfect place for all of us
You do not have enough stars to rate our experience at Ross-shire Hall. The home is beautiful. The ambience is so peaceful and calm. This home is completely and fully equipped with any and everything you can possibly want, including three baskets of toys for our toddler. We were a four generation family. This was the perfect place for all of us. All three fireplaces are relaid every day for beautiful fires in the evening. The grounds are lush and beautiful. Graham prepared dinners for us every evening, and provided soups and sandwiches for lunches. The food was unforgettable. If you want to experience how royalty lives, please visit. Elizabeth and Graham will take care of everything and make you feel like kings and queens. I cannot say enough. This is by far the most memorable experience any of us have ever had at a BNB.

Hope to return soon
I cannot say enough about the fantastic stay we had at the Ross-shire Hall this past long weekend for a friend’s reunion. The house and location were gorgeous, and every last detail was considered by the hardworking, friendly and all-around incredible owners. The house is even more amazing in person than the pictures could do justice. Each beautifully furnished and decorated bedroom has a separate bathroom (well equip with everything you could possibly need), the living spaces were perfect to accommodate our group of friends for the weekend and the catered dinners were incredibly delicious (and specially crafted to account for numerous preferences and allergies). We enjoyed the beautiful house and grounds, a close drive to numerous local attractions (including Loch Ness). A highlight for us was the bagpiper playing on the night of our arrival (which the owner kindly coordinated for us!) Every single member of our group of 14 had a fabulous weekend and we are so grateful to the owners for an incredible stay at the Ross-shire Hall. Hope to return soon!
-
Outstanding!
We rented Ross-shire Hall in September. This is an outstanding property. The owners attention to detail is excellent. It is spotless, the kitchen is amazingly well appointed, the bedrooms and bathrooms all superb. There is no consideration which has not been thought of. The catering was impacted by COVID but Graham is a wonderful chef and provided endless meals left in the kitchen for our group. The grounds are beautifully kept and secluded. The house is brilliantly located with so much on offer for all ages nearby. Elizabeth and Graham are the best and we cannot recommend this house more highly. It is expensive but for what you get well worth it.
-
A privilege
I had the privilege of staying with nine other guests at Ross-shire for three nights. It was by far the best accommodations over the course of our 10-day trip through Scotland, having the place all to ourselves, with delicious breakfasts and dinners cooked by Graham and wonderful hosting and welcoming by Elizabeth... we couldn't have asked for anything more. Comfortable, spacious, clean, secluded... Ross-shire Hall has it all!
-
Stunning
The house is stunning, very impressive and well maintained as is the grounds around the house. Beautiful location with spectacular views and walks. The house has 7 bedrooms all en-suite and tastefully decorated. The beds were so comfortable and additional camp beds added for kids if required and plenty space to do so. Everything was really nice and well looked after. The towels are lovely with nice products in the bathrooms. Graham cooked dinner on the Saturday night and it was exceptionally good. The service and attention to detail was perfect. The girls that worked with him were lovely and so efficient. He is an excellent chef, well worth spoiling yourself and have dinner made for you. I honestly cannot rate this experience highly enough. We didn't want to go home! The owners, Graham and Elizabeth are fantastic hosts who should be so proud of what they have achieved.
-
Have to drag ourselves away.
You just have to walk out the door to experience the stunning scenery, it’s so unbelievably beautiful here. We loved Cromarty, pottering around, Sutor Creek Café and the boat trip. Cycling and quad biking at Aviemore and fabulous walks on your doorstep.
-
Unique Atmosphere
Lovely house and staff! Great vacations in an unique atmosphere.
-
This is the place of fairytales
Thank for you an amazing time in this wonderful castle, like a fairy tale. I can honestly say Elizabeth, Graham and their team have completely blown us away. The welcome, the service and the food were exceptional, everything was perfect.
-
Wow, wow, wow, what can we say?
Absolutely fantastic! Graham and Elizabeth, you and your team made our day so special. Your hospitality is second to none Words cannot thank you enough.
-
Scotland at its best
Our family of 14 had a fantastic stay at this property. It's spacious, very comfortable and very well appointed. The kitchen was the hub and the formal living room with the open fireplace was a favourite hangout come evening. It's also very well located for day trips further north. We would definitely go again in the future. The only thing missing was a clothes dryer which is much needed given the wet weather of Scotland and a prolonged stay.
-
Scottish Spirit
We will bring this Scottish spirit with us to Spain and it will never leave us! Thanks for everything, it's been great!

Such an amazing place! Thank you for creating a real oasis, an atmosphere that is totally relaxing and beautiful. The catering and the wonderful hospitality were the icing on the cake. You have taken what was obviously once a special place and turned it into a very special place. See you next time.
