Owner Profile
Property Owners
Katie & Max O'Rourke
How long have you owned the property?
About 5 years. We were looking for a family home with outside space and had gone for a walk to look at a property we knew was for sale. We walked past what is now Skyfall on our way – it was a 23 bedroom nursing home that had been put up for sale. My husband wasn’t interested in the other property but this one got his attention! We viewed it the next day – it still had all the nursing home equipment, zimmer frames, books, chairs, even false teeth! But Max saw the potential immediately and we put in an offer that day. It took four years of work to restore it to its former glory (it was originally a hotel), and we changed it into 2 5-bedroomed houses, one of which we live in, the other is Skyfall.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The view! The property has panoramic views of the English Channel. As soon as we walked into the lounge (of the nursing home) and looked out to sea, we knew it would make the most fabulous house for people to stay in. It also had a lot of original features that made us realise how grand it must once have been. The cornicing and the original staircase were very impressive.
Do you have a favourite room in the property?
That’s a hard one, we love them all! The kitchen diner because of the wood-burner, the décor and the views. But also, not strictly a room but we love the hot tub on the decking. When you are in it, all you can see is the ocean.
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Hastings and St Leonards are really quirky places, there is always something going on! From the Sea Food and Wine Festival, to Jack in the Green, there is an event on every weekend through the summer. We LOVE swimming in the sea here from April/May onwards – that would have to be our top recommendation!
Second on the list would be the coastal walks. Head West out of Skyfall and follow the beach all the way to the De La Warr Pavillion in Bexhill for lunch. Get the train back to West St Leonards station (5 minute walk from the house). Head East out of the house and along the front to the Old Part of town from where you can climb up the cliffs into the Hastings Country Park. Essentially they’re a 7 mile extension to the South Downs with incredibly scenery and walking trails that will challenge even the most seasoned of walkers.
Really eat?
Just round the corner is the best burger place – Half Man Half Burger. Check out the incredible grass-fed burgers and the cheesy fries. They also do great veggie and vegan options and killer desserts! For something a little special we recommend Graze on Grand or St Clements. My favourite restaurant is Farmyard on the Kings Rd.
Really see?
The old town of Hastings is a must see, it has so much character and a lot for families to do. You can also escape from the town on one of the 2 Victorian Funicular lifts, up the cliffs and into the Hastings Country Park (designated area of outstanding natural beauty). We love going for long walks along the beautiful stretch of coastline.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Come to Skyfall in the middle of Winter and you get to see both spectacular sunrises and sunsets from the sea-facing rooms. Christmas day started with us all in the hot tub for sunrise. Glass of Prosecco in hand, wood-burner lit, and the whole family together. It’s a memory that will stay with me forever.

Wow!
Wow this house! I've stayed in some 5* resorts, cottages, apartments etc, all over the world and this is right up there with the best. There isn't anything that hasn't been thought of from hooks by the hot tub for your robes, slippers to wear all weekend, REN products, towels to use for the hot tub. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the whole house has a feel of class. Elegant style, stunning location, infinity hot tub and a really warm welcome. I couldn't recommend this highly enough and we will all definitely be back!
