If you fancy venturing slightly further afield, you will get to know the stunning island of Antigua in no time. Encompassing two namesake sister islands and several smaller islets, the nation of Antigua and Barbuda is located in the heart of the beautiful Caribbean. Antigua is the largest of the nation’s islands at just 281 km², making it the perfect place for a relaxed Caribbean getaway. With 365 beaches, one for each day of the year, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to your next ocean swim!

The magnificent Nelson’s Dockyard National Park can be reached within forty-five minutes by car. One of five national parks in Antigua, this cultural treasure is located on the island’s southern coastline. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the eighteenth-century British naval dockyard is an area of great historical significance on the island and a popular venue for maritime events and activities. For those who wish to experience the magic for themselves, plenty of sailing excursions and water-based activities are available.

Antigua boasts a variety of fantastic trekking trails around the island, taking in sandy beaches, lush rainforests, and dreamlike coastal views. For a challenging day out, wear your hiking shoes and visit Mount Obama, the highest peak in Antigua. From the summit, enjoy the panoramic vistas of the island before descending to Cades Bay for a delightful dip in the ocean.

Don’t forget to visit Shirley Heights, a restored military lookout known for its bewitching views and community feel. With a popular street party happening every Sunday evening, visitors are welcome to enjoy the music of live Caribbean steel drum bands, taste some of the local food and rum punch and take in the breathtaking sights as the sun begins to go down on the beautiful island of Antigua.

Best Suited For: All Ages

Blue Waters provides a wide range of family-friendly activities to capture every visitor's imagination, young or old. The resort's Kids Club is open for children between five and twelve from Monday to Friday. Here, experienced and enthusiastic staff members will supervise younger visitors as they enjoy a wide variety of fun activities, from arts and crafts to sports days, with pizza and movie nights or dance parties come the evening. For older children, an afternoon spent swimming and snorkelling along the nearby beach coves is always popular. Later on, children aged twelve and over can pay a visit to the resort's dedicated games room, featuring a pool table, table tennis and plenty of board games.

For those who wish to explore more of Antigua, the island's amazing landscape has plenty to offer the whole family. Drive inland towards Fig Tree Drive, and within forty minutes, you will reach the incredible Antigua Rainforest Canopy Park, where a day of ziplining and rainforest adventure awaits! A range of fun and friendly eco-activities is available here, with options to suit all age groups. With knowledgeable instructors to guide you at every step along the way, you will cross suspension bridges and rope obstacles whilst ziplining your way above the treetops and crisscrossing a stunning gorge. Not for the faint-hearted, this exhilarating day out varies in intensity, with ziplines throughout the rainforest at various heights and lengths. Remember to take a break in the magical twin tree houses tucked away in the dense rainforest.

The hiking and trekking trails of Nelson's Dockyard are another great way to get closer to nature, this time with your feet planted firmly on the ground! Make your way from the marina at Nelson's Dockyard up to the panoramic views of Shirley Heights on a quiet weekday afternoon for a scenic hike that everyone will remember. This is a relatively easy hike, but make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and pack plenty of water. There are handy downloadable trail maps available online.

Back down at Nelson's Dockyard, there is plenty of fun to be had out on the water, with sailing excursions for beginners and more experienced sailors available. Watersports are widely available throughout the island, with sea kayaking and kitesurfing among the most popular. On land, horse riding enthusiasts can saddle up by arranging a visit to a local riding club. Horseback tours can be booked to suit a range of age groups and abilities, taking in gorgeous valleys and pristine beaches with the help of new friends. For an introduction to an essential facet of Antiguan culture, why not take the family to watch a local cricket match? The island is fiercely devoted to its national sport, played everywhere, though official matches tend to take place on weekends.
