Boasting a gorgeous swimming pool, a secluded beach, nine tennis courts and an exciting watersports centre, as well as a fully equipped gym and luxury spa, the facilities at Carlisle Bay may entice you to spend each and every day of your holiday enjoying all that this stunning island resort has to offer. However, should you wish to travel slightly further afield, Antigua’s amazing landscapes and 365 beaches lie waiting to be discovered!

The nation of Antigua and Barbuda is made up of two sister islands and several smaller islets, all situated in the heart of the Caribbean. On the island of Antigua, a blissful beach for every day of the year is only the beginning of all that you will soon discover.

Famed as the sailing capital of the Caribbean, the picturesque marinas of English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour can easily be reached within half an hour by car. Here you can watch superb yachts come and go whilst soaking up the vibrant atmosphere that Antigua’s southern coastline has to offer. For those who wish to experience the magic for themselves, there are plenty of sailing excursions, boat tours and other exhilarating water-based activities available. Visitors can arrange to charter a private boat or take a guided trip around the island’s spectacular reefs and secluded coves.

The magnificent Nelson’s Dockyard National Park is one of five national parks in Antigua. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this eighteenth-century British naval dockyard is an area of great historical significance, as well as a popular venue for maritime events and activities. From Nelson’s Dockyard, hike to Shirley Heights, another popular destination on the island. A restored military lookout, this is a spot known for its bewitching views and community feel. With a popular street party happening every Sunday afternoon, visitors are welcome to enjoy the music of live Caribbean steel drum bands, taste some of the local food and rum punch and take in the breathtaking sights as the sun begins to go down on the stunning island of Antigua.

There are plenty of fantastic trekking trails around the island, taking in sandy beaches, rainforests and dreamlike coastal views. For a challenging hike, put on your hiking shoes and visit Mount Obama, Antigua’s highest peak. From the summit, enjoy the panoramic views before descending to Cades Bay for a delightfully refreshing dip in the ocean.

Carlisle Bay offers a wide variety of family-friendly activities, ensuring everyone is entertained and having fun throughout their stay. The resort is home to three excellent kids’ clubs run by experienced childcare professionals. Open seven days a week, the clubs host age-appropriate group activities for children between the ages of four and twelve. With a huge range of exciting activities available, children will be supervised and encouraged by caring, enthusiastic staff members while they enjoy watersports, sunny games on the tennis courts, beach adventures and movie screenings! There is even a Cool Kids Beginners Club for children aged two and three.

For those who are restless to explore more of Antigua, the island’s amazing landscape has plenty to offer the whole family. Drive inland along Fig Tree Drive, and within ten minutes, you will reach the incredible Antigua Rainforest Canopy Park, where a day of ziplining and rainforest adventure awaits! A range of fun and friendly eco-activities is available here, with options to suit all age groups. With knowledgeable instructors to guide you at every step along the way, you will cross suspension bridges and rope obstacles whilst ziplining your way above the treetops and crisscrossing a stunning gorge. Not for the faint-hearted, this exhilarating day out varies in intensity, with zip lines throughout the rainforest at various heights and lengths. Don’t forget to take a break in the magical twin tree houses tucked away in the dense rainforest.

The hiking and trekking trails of Nelson’s Dockyard are another great way to get closer to nature, this time with your feet planted firmly on the ground! Make your way from the marina at Nelson’s Dockyard up to the panoramic views of Shirley Heights on a quiet weekday afternoon for a scenic hike that everyone will remember. This is a relatively easy hike but do make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and pack plenty of water. There are handy downloadable trail maps available online.

Back down at Nelson’s Dockyard, there is plenty of fun to be had out on the water, with sailing excursions for beginners and more experienced sailors available. On land, horse riding enthusiasts can saddle up by arranging a visit to a local riding club. Horseback tours can be booked to suit a range of age groups and abilities, taking in gorgeous valleys and pristine beaches with the help of new friends. For an introduction to a truly important facet of Antiguan culture, why not take the family to watch a local cricket match? The island is fiercely devoted to its national sport, which is played everywhere, though official matches tend to take place on weekends.

Later, head back to Carlisle Bay Beach for a relaxing sunset swim together. Once the stars come out, everyone will be sure to sleep soundly after another day of fun and adventure!
