Beyond this salon is a luscious terrace that is equipped with both a seating and dining area, making it a marvellous place for socialising whilst gazing out towards the ocean waves. Additionally, this terrace leads out to your very own swimming pool, suitable for cooling off after a long day under the Bajan sun.

The main house at Annatto is the true jewel in the estate’s crown as it is home to both the master bedroom and two guest rooms. About the Island & Getting There

About Barbados

At first glance you could be mistaken for thinking that Barbados is purely a beach holiday destination, but you're urged to reconsider this common belief. The island of Barbados is peppered with astonishing landscapes (both coastal and inland), enchanting locals, sublime cuisine, intriguing rums, fascinating wildlife, symbolic architecture and a selection of striking holiday villas.

Delve deep into the history of the island and start your holiday by visiting Sunbury Plantation House & Museum. This former plantation was built in 1660's and the premises are scattered with antiquities that delicately detail a recent history of Barbados. St. Nicholas Abbey also provides an insightful representation of Sugarcane production, Bajan artefacts and a wonderful observation point at Cherry Tree Hill. If you’re keen to visit one of the oldest Parliamentary buildings within the Commonwealth and appreciate the democratic legacy of Barbados, drop by The Parliament Buildings. This neo-gothic congress can be found in Bridgetown and act as a representation of Barbados’s Independence. There is so much history present throughout the island and as a result, Bridgetown and its Garrison has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, which the locals are very proud of.

Great efforts have been made to persevere the natural beauty of Barbados, so if you’re drawn to the exploration of National Parks and multicoloured gardens, it won’t take you long to realise that Barbados is a haven for such paradises! Within the Andromeda Botanic Gardens, Farley Hill National Park, Flower Forest, Hunte's Gardens and Welchman Hall Gully - visitors, and Botanist alike, will be lost for hours admiring these astonishing botanical parklands. Keep an eye out for the Dwarf Poinciana, or Peacock Flower…it’s the national flower of Barbados.

Bajan’s take their food very seriously! If you and your fellow travellers are enticed by the gastronomic aspect of holidaying, we believe you’ve selected the right island. With every aspect of cookery mastered; from pickling to freshly prepared dishes, sweet & savoury, fragrant & spicy and of course, the bountiful choice of seafood. Check out the food stalls in Paynes Bay Church – where vendors exhibit locally made dishes & street food that will scintillate the taste buds. At the end of every working week, locals and tourists both flock to Oistins, for 'Fish Fry Day'. This is a must for those who haven’t undergone the experience! The evening starts with barbecues and then ascends into a joyful party. This caps off a busy few days of work for locals as well as the 'strains' associated with serious holidaying.

Barbados is of course iconic for its Beaches & Rum…so why not bring them together? You will have to go out of your way not to be able to find a beach bar along the west coast of the island, as well as the countless Rum Shops. Yes, you’ve read correctly, Rum Shops! These small and locally run businesses embrace the Bajan spice of life, in liquid form. Very delicious! If you’re searching for something a little more special, take a trip to the east coast and visit Sand Dunes Bar and Restaurant at Windy Hill, for an unforgettable experience.

Barbados is a distinct and striking part of the Caribbean. It’s a great fit for all types of travellers, as the island really does have it all. For a little more information about this delightful island, check out our guide to a remarkable stay!

  • We can’t wait to return!

    on 02/10/2023

What an incredible property and staff! I must admit that I’m a bit picky when it comes to travel accommodations and even high-end hotels and private house rentals often leave me a bit disappointed. Despite trying to temper my expectations, I had very high hopes for this property, and it did not disappoint. All of us may have shed a tear when we had to leave, and all agreed it was our best vacation yet.

From the moment we arrived on property we were greeted with friendly, welcoming staff and fresh island drinks. We were quickly settled into the home and given a tour of the stunning property. The Chef had dinner being prepared and we were able to immediately kick into vacation mode that as parents we don’t often get when vacationing with our kids. We were able to freshen up and a lovely dinner was served. The Chef met with us that evening to discuss our meal expectations for the week and made sure to understand our daughter’s food allergies. I always feel on edge when traveling with our daughter, but especially outside of the US, due to her anaphylactic food allergies. But the Chef discussed her allergies and provided reassurance that all food presented would be allergen free for her. I honestly didn’t worry about it the rest of the week and it was nice. We requested meals prepared with a local flare and every meal she prepared was exceptional and enjoyed by all!

The housekeepers/ laundresses were very discreet and unobtrusive yet seemed to be everywhere. While we rarely saw them, our beds were always made, rooms always tidy, laundry always done. We never lifted a finger! My son even had a used towel go missing by the pool one day while he was swimming. I’d been sitting by the pool with him and neither of us ever saw them replace his towel with a fresh clean one, but they did!

And Greg, the Butler. What more can you say but FABULOUS!!! He was the right mix of unobtrusive, but attentive and it was a total delight to talk with him and get to know him. He performs his job impeccably, anticipating our needs before they were ever expressed, and we felt so cared for all week.
I can’t express adequately how wonderful everyone was. We left feeling like they were family.

And then let’s talk about the property itself…AMAZING!!! The house was stunning and comfortable. And the property is immensely well maintained with stunning gardens. We enjoyed the beach access right out the back of the property. Despite the beaches being public we had total privacy and the beach to ourselves each time we were out there. My teen daughter enjoyed the private gym immensely each day and my son loved the tennis courts. We also enjoyed the animals that would visit on the property from time to time, including land crabs, a mongoose and the monkeys.
The entire time we were there we just felt at total ease. It was the first vacation, since having kids, where my husband and I left feeling like we truly had a vacation and didn’t need another one after to recover.
Again, a HUGE THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone who made this trip spectacular for us. We can’t wait to return!

FABULOUS stay. Staff was amazing. Accommodations and the grounds were beyond - simply breathtaking. I've been to Barbados 30 times in 35 years - this was to be a special trip and it sure was!!!!!

  • Amazing

    on 05/07/2022

The villa is beautiful, very clean which is important to me. The butler Jason was so attentive, we wanted for nothing. The housekeepers Phil and Shakira were lovely also, kept everywhere spotless, and also did our laundry very well. They had a temporary chef Willis, his food was lovely. Our stay there was the most enjoyable and relaxing stay we’ve ever had in Barbados.

  • Trip of a lifetime!

    on 04/07/2022

Trip of a lifetime! The villa is pure evidence of God’s beauty. The entire staff was so wonderful and made us feel like royalty. Such a joyful and peaceful experience. Grateful for the opportunity to visit and share this paradise.

  • Love you guys!

    on 27/05/2022

Can’t thank you enough for this unforgettable time! Not to mention you were part of the most important day in our lives ‘our wedding’, and made it even more special than we ever imagined. To all the staff, you guys knew exactly what we needed and went above and beyond to make us unique. Marielle; we could taste your soul in the beautiful meals you specially created for us, we can tell you love what you do and that is represented in every dish that you put in front of us. Jason!!!! Oh man… there isn’t enough words to thank you for absolutely everything you did for us. It’s lovely to have people like you in our lives now. Hope we are in yours too. Love you guys!

  • Everything exceeded our expectation

    on 16/04/2022

Everything exceeded our expectation. All the staff made sure we wanted for nothing. The gardens are a small paradise. The pool was a perfect place to read and relax. Every room was perfect, filled with lovely things we continue to discover throughout the week. We could not have found a more perfect place to reunite with our daughter and celebrate our 60th birthdays. Thank you for sharing your exquisite home with our family and friends.

  • Wonderful

    on 16/11/2018

I stayed at the wonderful, magical Annatto Estate in October/November 2018. My family and I found it delightful in every way. The house has been put together over time with such taste and attention to detail that it offers every comfort imaginable whilst retaining the original classical charm of the designer, Oliver Messel. Annatto Estate provided an army of staff to cater to our every whim and had a truly world class chef who could rival any restaurant on the island. The house was totally enclosed in two acres of heavenly gardens which led to the beach and there was a wide secluded swimming beach 2 minutes walk away. Unspoilt Speightstown was a gentle 15 minutes stroll and we enjoyed the old world charm and morning markets. I have been to Barbados many times but staying at Annatto Estate made for the most enjoyable and relaxing stay I have experienced. When it came time to pack my bags I did not want to leave!
