Location
About the surrounding area of Villa OlivesThe stunning island of Grenada is only 12 miles wide and 21 miles long. It boasts a mountainous and volcanic terrain reaching heights of over 2750 feet on the top of Mount St Catherine, breathtaking sandy beaches, gorgeous crater lakes, waterfalls, rainforests and exquisite coral reefs. The three islands of Grenada, Grenada, Garriacou and Petit Martinique, are located in the Eastern Caribbean. You can take ferry boats over to the smaller islands. Grenada is known as the ‘Spice Isle’ due to its abundance of locally ground spices including nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cloves and its culture of music, dance and food. You can literally smell the nutmeg in the air! It is one of the most beautiful of the Caribbean islands. Visitors can enjoy amazing hikes in the national parks, game fishing, yachting, watersports, tennis, golf, beach days and visits to chocolate, rum and nutmeg factories. There is a wonderful nightlife, excellent markets and fabulous music.
There are many attractions on the island including the Craft and Spice market, Belmont Estate, Rivers Antoine Rum Distillery, Laura’s Spice and Herb Garden, The Tower Estate, the Home of Blue Tea, L’Esterre Estate for a cocoa tour and plantation lunch tour, The Spice Basket, Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, Nutmeg Processing Cooperative, Fort Frederik and Fort George and of course the wonderful beaches. The Underwater Water Park at Molinere Bay, just north of St George’s is amazing. It is a project founded by British artist Jason de Caires Taylor. There are 80 pieces in more than a dozen main works. The life-size sculptures include a man at a desk and a circle of children. Fish and sponges have created a fascinating mix of culture and nature. The park is accessible to snorkelers and divers.
The Nutmeg Processing Cooperative on Gouyave’s main road is very important to Grenada’s heritage. It is an enormous, fascinating nutmeg processing station offering tours through rows of drying racks which are covered with the fruit of nutmeg trees descended from the first ones planted by the British in 1843.
River Antoine Rum Distillery has been producing fiery rum since 1785. Visitors are shown all aspects of the smoky, pungent production process from the crushing of cane to fermentation and distillation on the interesting tours. You can taste and buy the potent rum. The Belmont Estate, similarly educates you on the chocolate process, showing traditional rural life at its best. The Spice Basket is a cultural theatre and tourist centre with a superb West Indian Cricket Museum.
The lush interior of the island should not be missed. You can visit the splendid Annadale Falls for drive-in access or hike to Concorde or Seven Sisters Waterfalls. Swimming in the pool below Seven Sisters Waterfall is an incredible experience. Mount Qua Qua is one of the tallest mountains in Grenada or you can take an advanced hike to Mount St Catherine, the highest peak on this mesmerising island. You can rent a car or take a private tour driving up the west coast past St George’s and the Kirani James Athletic Stadium. You can visit the factories and distilleries and head towards the little fishing village of Grenville. Then you can head into the Grand Etang National Park to explore the lush forest and mountains. You may even get a greeting from a mona monkey! Sun Hunters Adventure Dune Buggies makes for a truly unique way of exploring Grenada.
Shopping is excellent on Grenada. Spiceland Mall, Grenada’s American style shopping centre in Grand Anse, fabulous arts, crafts and Batik clothing shops in St George’s or the Craft and Spice Market on Grand Anse Beach are all wonderful places to shop. Hilly St George’s is one of the region’s most attractive capitals. The Saturday market at St George Square is an absolute delight. You can squeeze onto a public minibus to visit if you like rather than taking your car. At The Carenage you can wander past the pretty moored fishing boats and the Georgian-era government buildings climbing up to Fort George. There are wonderful panoramic views to be enjoyed. Grand Anse is one of the finest Grenada beaches with fine white sand, sun loungers and the Craft and Spice market on the northern end.

Best Suited For: All AgesThere is a brilliant range of entertainment for the whole family on Grenada, from cultural experiences, outdoors activities including hiking, meeting giant leatherback turtles, swimming, snorkeling and diving to visiting distilleries, chocolate factories and spice factories.
The Belmont Estate is always a hit with children. It is one of the most popular attractions on the island and is located in St Patrick. Belmont Estate is an authentic 17th century plantation where you can join an educational and interesting tour to visit the organic farm, the gardens, the heritage museum and cocoa processing facilities. Children also enjoy the goat dairy farm, the petting farm and, most of all, tasting the chocolate! In St Georges, there is the House of Chocolate, a very unique and beautiful hand crafted, mini-museum-boutique, chocolateria-cafe portraying the history of chocolate in the world and Grenada. Tri Island Chocolate is also popular where children can create their own chocolate bar experience.
Families enjoy some very special beach days in Grenada. Grand Anse Beach is one of the most spectacular, a long, lovely sweep of white sand fronted by turquoise blue water and backed by hills. Other popular beaches include Morne Rouge, a beautiful, quiet beach and Levera Beach, part of the Levera National Park and an important waterfowl habitat and sea turtle site. Children also enjoy taking a 5 minute boat ride over to Paradise Beach on Carriacou Island. Children can participate in many watersports, either in the resort or on many of the beaches.
Children also love exploring the lush rainforest and mountainous interior of the island. The waterfalls are amazing. Royal Mount Carmel falls enjoys two sublime waterfalls that plunge more than 70 feet into crystal pools. Together they make up the island's highest waterfall. Annandale Falls offers a 30 foot waterfall in a grotto of lush vegetation with a pool beneath the falls that's deep enough for a swim. Make sure you take your swimming costumes if you head there! Grand Etang Lake is beautiful. It is surrounded by rainforest and is located in an old crater 1700 feet above sea level. If you are lucky you may even see monkeys in the national park. Grand Adventures is a very professional company that organises hikes and tours of the parks and the wonderful interior of this heavenly island.
