An array of excellent outdoor attractions and experiences will make your stay on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia a great adventure.

In the north of the island, the capital city, Castries, is well worth a visit. This busy port welcomes many cruise ships to the island, with popular attractions including the Castries Central Market. A city of British and French influences, you can enjoy diverse architecture and some wonderful views over Castries from the ‘Hill of Good Luck’, Morne Fortune.

About 20 minutes’ drive north of Castries, the village of Gros Islet is known for its lively Friday night street parties which offer a good introduction to the island’s food and culture. Gros Islet is only five minutes from Rodney Bay, where Reduit Beach and the Rodney Bay Marina are the hangouts of choice. With opportunities to go sailing, excellent waterfront dining and a good-sized shopping mall in the form of Baywalk, there’s lots to keep you entertained in this west coast resort. George F.L. Charles Airport, can also be found in Castries.

Not far away Pigeon Island is a big draw. Connected to the mainland by a causeway, this area has lovely beaches and historic sights including a fortress and barracks. Wonderfully scenic, it’s great for hiking and long walks. Pigeon Island also hosts the annual Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival each spring, among many other events.

If you are into ornithology, Saint Lucia is a good place to be. You can spot lots of exotic and rare species around the island, with the Millet Bird Sanctuary or Quilesse Forest Reserve among the best places to spot the famed Saint Lucia Parrot.

Several of the island’s most significant sights can be found around the Soufrière area on the west coast. The so-called ‘drive-in volcano’ of Soufrière is one of these – a lively, sulphurous mass that doesn’t disappoint. You can take a guided tour to get the best views of this mighty volcano in all its glory.

The volcanic cones of the two Pitons form the area’s other star attraction. You can climb right to the top of the Gros Piton and Petit Piton if you have a guide (and a lot of stamina), but following one of the local nature trails and viewing the peaks from a distance is likely to be enough for most. Pay a visit to the pretty town of Soufrière too, while you’re in the area.

About the Island & Getting There

About St Lucia

The Land, The People, The Light – St Lucia’s motto couldn’t be more representative of this captivating sovereign island nation. Witness dazzling scenery, be spellbound by the fascinating locals and allow for St Lucia to brighten your day and show you a new way to life.

St Lucia gained its independence from the British Commonwealth in 1979 and after centuries of a French presence, which is most visible today in the original Capital of Soufrière, St Lucia is famous for its Pitons & landscapes and vivacious community.

St Lucia really is a hiker’s Nirvana! Where to start? That’s a tough question. However, with the likes of - The Diamond Botanical Gardens, Enbas Saut Waterfall Trail, Pigeon Island National Park, Sulphur Springs Park Scenic Drive and Tet Paul Nature Trail – it doesn’t matter! These UNESCO listed sites are a sight to behold. If you're likely to take to the water, you'll be able to admire the rich marine biodiversity just off the shore of St Lucia. Over 60% of the marine area is made up of coral reefs and these are very poular with snorkelers and scuba divers. Just make sure you put time aside to relish these privileged land & seascapes.

Start your cultural trip downtown in Castries. Here you will be provided with more than enough entertainment for an afternoon and evening. The local Market runs throughout the week and is certainly the right place to come for exotic fruits and tantalising Street Food - the Green Fig & Salt Fish is local delicacy and it's not scarce, so perhaps try a few variants on this regional intricacy and let us know which is your favourite! The vendors are incredibly animated, so expect a show to be put on if you choose to explore this part of the island and brush up on those haggling skills. La Place Carenage and Point Seraphine are very popular Malls and if you bear in mind the added incentive of these complexes being Duty-Free, you and your guests will certainly get some good deals (A taxi back to your villa after such an excursion is suggested!).

Many holiday makers are surprised to learn of St Lucia’s rich cocoa legacy. Ever since the 1700’s this island has been producing cocoa related products, that are incredibly sought after all across the world. Morne Coubaril Estate and La Dauphine Estate specialise in showcasing how plantations use to gather & manufacture the Cocoa Bean fruit and organise educational tours. After learning all about St Lucia’s former booming cocoa industry, you will probably need some therapy…how about chocolate therapy like you’ve never encountered before? Enquire at some of the islands more renowned Spas and you’ll be able to experience the benefits of a chocolate facial and massage. Remember - Chocolate isn’t a food, it’s a medicine!

We have selected some of the most exciting villas on the island, so browse through these dreamy holiday homes and have a look at our cheeky little guide to St Lucia!

Prior to Booking

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Take the kids to Saint Lucia for an adventure they won’t forget. This compact island squeezes in lots of impressive things to see and do, alongside a fantastic array of glorious beaches.

One of these is just moments from your villa. Reduit Beach is one of the highlights of Rodney Bay, with lots for children to enjoy, including five miles of white sands and good conditions for swimming and snorkelling. Most notably, there’s the Splash Island Water Park which provides slides and trampolines and the like on the sea itself. You can also enjoy great meals out together around Rodney Bay and go shopping at the Baywalk Mall which has more than 50 stores and restaurants under one roof.

Another great family day out can be had at the Morne Coubaril Plantation. In the south of the island, not far from Soufrière, this historic coffee and cocoa plantation is found on a beautiful estate. You can enjoy tasting tours and activities including zip-lining on site. Also in Soufrière, you’ll find the tropical Diamond Botanical Gardens which are a peaceful oasis that everyone can appreciate.

There are more of those pesky zip-lines waiting for you at Dennery’s Treetop Adventure Park. On the eastern side of the island, this 35-acre park is ideal for older children, and has rope bridge courses too. Some similar attractions can be found at the Rainforest Adventure Park, closer to Castries, which features eye-catching aerial trams which transport you through the forest.

Other scenic places of interest include Mamiku Gardens, Quilesse Forest and the Sapphire Falls & Jungle Spa which are located near the spectacular Sulphur Springs Park in Soufrière. It’s here that you can experience the unforgettable ‘drive-in volcano’. Alternatively, you can admire the area’s other famous peaks, the towering Pitons, by following a nature trail. The Tet Paul Trail is one that’s not too long, so it’s good for young kids.

Children aged 8 can take a deep dive into the ocean with Sea Trek’s Helmet Diving tour in Castries. Great for seeing sea creatures in their natural habitat, this is a dive which doesn’t require any certificates, just a bit of bravery. Quilesse Forest Reserve and the Millet Bird Sanctuary are very peaceful alternatives, offering the chance to spot dozens of species of bird. You can also look out for boat tours which will allow the kids to spot whales and dolphins off the Saint Lucia coast.
