Location
About the surrounding area of Villa EmberGiven Villa Ember’s captivating sea views, it’s no surprise its location is only a short distance (7-minute walk) from the beach. And despite the villa’s secluded position on a pristine hillside, local amenities are not far away, including a supermarket (6-minute walk) and ferry terminal (7-minute walk).
The stunning old town of Stari Grad (5-minute drive) is close at hand. Renowned as one of the oldest towns in Europe (first settled by Greeks in 384 BC), Stari Grad sits at the end of the long, protected bay over which Villa Ember looks. This picturesque town of white-stone streets, marble pathways and blooming bougainvillaea make it a peaceful port of call for daily adventures to beaches, shops, cafes, restaurants and ancient sights. Don’t miss the Stari Grad Museum set in the neo-renaissance Bianchini Palace, where the remains of a Roman shipwreck can be seen.
Stari Grad was also home to the Croatian Renaissance poet Petar Hektorovic, who built a well-preserved fortified residence as protection against attack by the Ottoman Navy. The residence includes a sea-water fish pond lined by vaulted arcades and a walled garden.
If a bit of vivacity and nightlife is what you’re looking for, look no further than Hvar Town (a 20-minute drive) and don’t forget to pass through the famous Hvar Lavender Fields on your way. Try Hvar’s signature dish of Gregada – a stew of fish, potatoes, onions, garlic and olive oil – perhaps best sampled at Giaxa.

Region
The island of Hvar stands out as one of Croatia's most enchanting destinations - a picturesque paradise that seamlessly combines natural beauty, historical charm and a lively cultural scene. The sun-drenched island’s stunning landscapes provide a picture-perfect backdrop to a whole wealth of
unforgettable experiences.
At the heart of the island is the port town of Hvar, a historic gem known for its well-preserved architecture and timeless allure. Take a wander through the traffic-free labyrinth of narrow streets, where you can soak up the charm of the island. The central square of Hvar Town is a bustling hub surrounded by centuries-old buildings and lively cafes - it’s a popular spot to enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine from one of the many cafes and restaurants. The square is also home to the imposing St. Stephen's Cathedral, a beautiful example of Dalmatian Renaissance architecture.
Overlooking the town is the Hvar Fortress, a medieval citadel with a history dating back to the 13th century. The fortress is worthy of a visit for the epic panoramic views that stretch across the town and the Adriatic Sea. The ascent is especially rewarding it at sunset, when you can watch the town's
lights sparkle below.
Heading inland just a few kilometres from Hvar Town, the village of Velo Grablje is famous for its lavender fields. Visit during the summer and you'll be treated to the sight and scent of the vast fields in full bloom. The island is also celebrated for its vineyards and olive groves, producing some of Croatia's best wines and olive oils. Many wineries and oil mills offer tastings and tours, allowing
you to sample these local delights while learning about traditional production methods.
Just a short boat ride from the harbour of Hvar are the Pakleni Islands, a group of islets renowned for their pristine beaches, hidden coves, and emerald sea. The idyllic surroundings offer a tranquil escape from the bustle of the main island, making it a favoured day trip destination. Explore hidden
bays, discover secluded beaches, and enjoy water sports in this unspoiled paradise. The uninhabited resort of Palmižana on the island of Sveti Clement is a particular highlight - a hidden oasis known for its lush botanical gardens and crystal-clear water.
For outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, Hvar's natural beauty provides a picturesque playground. Hvar offers numerous cycling trails for both beginners and experienced riders. The island's diverse terrain is ideal for exploring the charming villages, olive groves, and vineyards on two wheels. Or for a unique perspective of the islands scenic beauty, you can experience the Adriatic up close and paddle along the dramatic coastline in a kayak, discovering coves and sea caves.
Hvar, is a Mediterranean paradise that promises an array of unforgettable experiences. Whether you're wandering through the historic streets of Hvar Town, discovering hidden coves on the Pakleni Islands, or savouring local wines and delicacies, the island offers a blend of cultural exploration, natural beauty, and relaxation that's hard to match.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesOne of the most popular outdoor activities in Hvar, which will undoubtedly prove popular with the little ones, is to sail the Pakleni Islands. The one-day boat trip around unspoiled islands close to Hvar Town will take you swimming and snorkelling in secluded coves. If a whole day sounds too much, there are also mid-morning or sunset sails of only four hours. For the more adventurous kids and teenagers, the Pakleni Islands are also home to fascinating shipwrecks that serve as spectacular scuba diving sights.
Another interesting sight is Grapčeva špilja – one of the best-preserved Neolithic cave dwellings in the Mediterranean. Here, dramatic stalactites and stalagmites look much as they would have 3,000 years ago when it was last inhabited.
And for those kids with a sweet tooth, don’t forget to check out Nonica in Hvar Town. This cosy bakery is located down a narrow stone alleyway uphill from the seafront and boasts cakes like your grandmother used to make. Try local favourites such as Hforski koloč, a melting-moment style biscuit with a hint of citrus.
