Location
About the surrounding area of Villa BlagoAn incredible place with a fascinating past, the proud coastal city of Dubrovnik is truly stunning. Many visitors dive right in with a walk along the fortified City Walls, a 2km route which naturally offer some breath-taking views of the Adriatic. While this activity can be taxing, especially if the heat and crowds peak simultaneously, it’s surely one you will want to tick off your list.
The city boasts a number of notable palaces, monasteries and churches. The ornate Sponza Palace dates back to the 1500s and is now a popular wedding venue, having previously served as a customs house, bank and the state treasury. The slightly older Rector’s Palace now houses the Cultural History Museum, while the Franciscan Monastery is home to one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, which has operated since 1391.
Various museums and galleries focus on archaeology, art and natural history, while modern day culture can be enjoyed at festivals throughout the year. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival brings live entertainment to the streets during July and August, while February sees the city’s Venetian-style carnival brimming with masked merriment.
Elegant Stradun is the street which serves as the Old Town’s beating heart. Right by the Pile Gate entrance you’ll see the eye-catching Onofrio Fountain – or, at least, the larger of two bearing this name. A second smaller fountain can be found on nearby Luza Square, where Sponza Palace is situated. The rest of Stradun is lined with restaurant terraces giving it a lively buzz in the evenings.
The city has so many historic sights it can be tricky knowing where to start, but happily there are numerous organised tours to guide you. Some have embraced a Game of Thrones theme in recent years, as a lot of the series was filmed in and around Dubrovnik. If you want the full experience, try to visit Trsteno Arboretum, Fort Lovrijenac and the isle of Lokrum – you won’t need to be a fan to appreciate them.
Finally, be sure to jump in a cable car up Mt Srd. As you ascend, you’ll get a magnificent view of all the places you’ve just visited, as well as to the nearby islands. Further out of the city, you’ll find wonderful beaches at Zaton and Orašac, and the pretty harbour town of Cavtat, all of them lovely escapes if the city gets too busy for you.

Dubrovnik's Old Town, a captivating and well-preserved city on the southern coast of Croatia, is a place that effortlessly transports you through time. This historic walled city, with its timeless beauty and rich heritage, offers a unique blend of history and culture that will captivate your heart.
Enclosed within the formidable stone walls, Dubrovnik's Old Town is an architectural masterpiece that has endured for centuries. This medieval gem has witnessed the ebb and flow of history, from its origins as the Republic of Ragusa to its present-day status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Entering the city through the imposing Pile Gate, you step into a world where every cobblestone has a story to tell. The limestone-paved Stradun, the main street, stretches out before you, flanked by elegant baroque buildings that house a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants. The harmonious blend of architectural styles creates an atmosphere of timeless splendour.
Visiting the Old Town's marketplaces is a great way to immerse yourself in the city, and a perfect opportunity to sample fresh produce, local cheeses, and delicious pastries. You can savour traditional Croatian ice cream or indulge in some local sweets and delicacies. Don't forget to try the traditional Dubrovnik cake, Rožata, which is a real treat for the taste buds!
One of the city's famous historical highlights is the Rector's Palace, a stunning Gothic-Renaissance structure that was the seat of power during the days of the Republic. Today, it houses a museum that offers a window into the city's history. Another architectural gem to check out is the Sponza Palace, a former 16th century customs house and mint that is a testament to the city's prosperity, with its elegant blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles.
For those interested in the city's spiritual and artistic side, the Dominican Monastery is a quiet sanctuary that showcases both. The monastery's cloister is a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture, and the museum boasts a rich collection of art and historical artefacts, offering a deeper understanding of the city's history and culture.
If you’re seeking a bit of outdoor fun, then a trip to Banje Beach is a must for your itinerary! This pebble beach is within walking distance from the Old Town and boasts crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Families can enjoy a spot of snorkelling, or even a boat ride to explore nearby islands.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesDubrovnik certainly delivers for families. There’s a lot to do in and around this magnificent city. One of the most fun is the cable car ride up to the top of Mt. Srd. Much more relaxing than climbing the city’s steep hills or walking the walls, this is a great way to reward the kids after a long day. Not only for the stunning views – there’s a restaurant and gift shop waiting for them too.
Back down in the Old Town, you could always have dinner on iconic Stradun. This glorious street with an Italianate feel has plenty of restaurants and often hosts live entertainment. Prefer spending time at the beach? Banje Beach is a good family choice. located close to the centre of town. Lapad Beach is a pleasant alternative which has shallow waters, play areas and ice cream stalls, so young kids will be in their element.
A boat trip to the beautiful Elafiti Islands could also be a good option. Regular sailings will take you there, with some cruises including lunch and off-boat swimming. Not every island is accessible, but you will be able to visit the largest, Šipan, as well as Lopud and Koločep. The latter has the intriguing Blue and Green Caves – you may find that your tour stops by along the way.
Another good way to make the most of a local guide is in a buggy safari. These off-road adventures will pick you up from wherever you like and show you spectacular scenery and landmarks off the beaten track.
A good place for a family day out outside the city is Cadmos Village. This adventure park offers all sorts of activities including paintballing, archery and zip-lines. Book in advance for this popular centre which is about 30 minutes from the centre of Dubrovnik.
There are many more opportunities to experience the great outdoors. The beautiful Trsteno Arboretum has a maze that kids will love losing themselves in, alongside areas of woodland and gardens. The island of Lokrum, as a designated nature reserve, also offers the chance to explore areas of forest, botanical gardens and beaches – and you can even take a kayak tour to get there.

This villa, the host and the location was everything we wanted in a girls trip! Mara was exceptional-her communication, promptness and overall commitment to our stay was top- notch. Stunning luxury villa with easy access to Old Town
Really nice and spacious villa for a big group. The pool is a nice cosy size and the views are spectacular. It’s about 20-30 minutes by bus to old town but Ubers aren’t that expensive and take around 15 minutes. The host was great and answered every question I had promptly. The downstairs bedrooms are quite small and don’t have much natural light but the upstairs lounge terrace and pool area outside - more than makes up for it.
Don't miss out! Reserve now and get a full refund if you change your mind within 48hrs.
