Location
About the surrounding area of Villa LaeliaVilla Laelia is situated next the small village of Soline, just a 10-minute drive from the enchanting and ancient harbour town of Cavtat (6.4 km). Dubrovnik, commonly known as the ‘pearl of the Adriatic,’ is also easily accessible by car or ferry (18 km).
Nearby Cavtat is an utter gem of a town. Founded in the mists of antiquity by the ancient Greeks, this beautiful settlement is a beguiling mix of striking natural scenery and charming cobbled streets and houses. The terracotta roofs and creamy hues of the town are wonderfully offset by lush mediterranean fauna and vines that grow in abundance. Cavtat is situated on the wooded ‘Rat Peninsula’, which is bordered on both sides by two sparkling bays, ensuring that you are never far from the sea. Along the peninsula’s shore, visitors will find quiet pebble beaches and shady coves, the air rich with the scent of pine and cyprus trees. The harbour of Cavtat itself is comprised of a colourful waterfront cluster of lively local restaurants offering a variety of freshly caught fish and delicious organic wine.
Cavtat’s 20th century incarnation was as a coastal retreat for Croatia’s most promising artists and this heritage is still very much reflected in the town today. Visitors should be sure to visit the Racic family Mausoleum, designed and decorated by the illustrious sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. The house of the Croatian painter Vlaho Bukavic and the 16th century Rector’s Palace also exhibit eclectic art collections.
Cavtat’s rich and varied past is also accessible to all those who saunter through the Renaissance Old Town. Those in search of sandy beaches should head to Zal, one kilometre east of the town centre where there are some beautiful coves.
Villa Laelia is also approximately half an hours drive south of the UNESCO heritage city of Dubrovnik. Described by George Bernard Shaw as ‘paradise on earth,’ Dubrovnik is frequently spoken of as one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. Once the prosperous capital of the ancient republic of Ragusa, Dubrovnik is a maze of aristocratic piazzas, baroque churches and medieval fortresses. It is a resplendent example of an archaic walled city and provided the setting for much of the popular ‘Game of Thrones’ series. It is also home to the oldest arboretum in the world as well as Europe’s third oldest pharmacy. Visitors must be sure to visit the city’s ‘Rectors palace’ as well as the fascinating Maritime museum. A trip up Mount Srd on the city’s cable car is also an unforgettable experience.
