Sat high on a hill, the old, walled town of Motovun is one of the highlights of Northern Istria. As well as spectacularly verdant surroundings, the town offers attractive eateries, a smattering of architecturally interesting buildings and its own International Film Festival in summer. Around 15km away is the scenic Lake Butoniga, while Hum – the world’s smallest town, they claim – is not too far east.

It’s on this side of the Istrian peninsula that you’ll find the mountainous Učka Nature Park. The ideal terrain for hiking, biking and the like, this picturesque area nudges towards the fringes of elegant Opatija, a grand coastal resort that has attracted the highest in society for decades.

On the western coast of Istria, Novigrad is famed for its excellent restaurants and colourful waterfront. With the Old Town streets adorned with brightly hued umbrellas, Novigrad isn’t short of charm or history – the Church of St Pelagius and St Maximus, with its tall bell tower, is a distinctive landmark. The town hosts all sorts of cultural events throughout the year, and has some good family attractions nearby, such as the Špilja Mramornica caves and Aqualand Istralandia water park. It’s also great for foodies, with some excellent restaurants and the annual Gnam-Gnam Fest boosting its credentials.

Pretty little Buzet, about 20 minutes from Motovun, makes for an easy day out, and it’s worth staying for dinner and sampling the local delicacy of truffles. The sought-after fungi are the theme of the town’s annual Festival of Subotina in September, where participants share a giant truffle omelette to mark the start of truffle season.
