Location
About the surrounding area of Villa SokoIstria is a region of Croatia which is more than worthy of exploration. From enchanting countryside to glamorous coastal hotspots, you’ll find a place for every mood.
Around 23km from Stokovci, the city of Pula is one of the area’s highlights. Known for its Roman architecture, its main attraction is the striking Roman Amphitheatre, or Arena. It’s well worth the trip to go and marvel at this ancient wonder, which still hosts regular entertainment events and the odd bit of gladiatorial conflict too. Be sure to also make time for Pula Cathedral, the impressively well-preserved Arch of the Sergii and the Temple of Augustus, among other notable sights.
Pula also hosts a major film festival each summer, with some screenings taking place in the amphitheatre. You can also visit a contemporary art museum and Croatia’s largest aquarium. Head to the town of Fazana and you can catch a boat out to the wonderful Brijuni National Park, which consists of a number of wooded islands with some lovely white sand beaches.
While you’re in Istria you won’t want to miss Rovinj, an idyllic coastal town which offers the most spectacular coastal views from the Baroque church of St Euphemia. Further up the coast, Poreč’s Roman Old Town and 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica are reason enough to pay a visit, and you can also take a boat trip to the scenic island of Sveti Nikola. Croatia’s northernmost island is a delight, and it only takes a few minutes to cross from Poreč. Alternatively, stay in town and venture into the deep at the atmospheric Baredine Cave.
Travel inland and you can discover lesser-known gems such as Motovun, a pretty, hilltop town of fortified walls and fortifying cuisine. No less than Anthony Bourdain sang the praises of restaurant Konoba Mondo, but that’s not this little town’s only claim to fame. Birthplace of motor racing great Mario Andretti, it also hosts the acclaimed Motovun International Film Festival each summer. Around 30km east, tiny Hum’s claim to being the world’s smallest city (population circa 30) draws curious visitors. Be sure to try the local truffles when you join them.
The region’s north east is dominated by the gorgeous Učka Nature Park, the place to be for endless hiking terrain with stunning views. The coast which runs parallel with the park’s eastern fringe is home to grand Opatija, an elegant resort which has attracted the great and the good for centuries –a stroll down the Lungomare promenade is sure to convince you of its considerable charm.

Region
Nestled along Croatia’s enchanting Adriatic coastline, Istria welcomes visitors with open arms and a rich tapestry of experiences waiting to be unraveled. Whether you're seeking adventure in nature, indulgence in culinary delights, a glimpse into history and culture, or simply a warm and inviting atmosphere, the peninsula of Istria has it all.
Istria's diverse and unspoiled landscapes will be the first thing to capture your attention! The region is renowned for its lush green hills, rolling vineyards, and enchanting coastline: the stunning scenery is a playground for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and beachgoers alike.
Offering a remarkable 445 kilometres of pristine coastline, including tranquil coves and sandy beaches, visitors can find plenty of secluded spots to soak up the sun. The clear, azure waters of the Adriatic are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and scuba diving, making it a fantastic choice for those who enjoy an active day of water sports.
Venture inland and you'll discover picturesque villages set amidst rolling hills and verdant forests. Istria is home to over 30 nature reserves - an absolute haven for hikers and cyclists, with an abundance of well-marked trails to explore. The Učka Nature Park, in particular, stands out as a hiking and nature lover's paradise, offering waterfalls, historic villages, and breathtaking panoramic views of Istria's outstanding scenery.
Istria's rich history is woven into the fabric of its towns and cities. An ever popular choice for tourists is the impressive port city of Pula, full of quaint town squares and local restaurants, and home to one of the most well-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. This ancient arena, known as the Pula Arena, is a testament to Istria's Roman heritage and hosts numerous events, including concerts and film festivals.
The medieval towns of Rovinj and Motovun enchant visitors with their cobbled streets and historic charm. The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a stunning example of early Christian art and architecture.
Istria's culinary scene is a treat for the taste buds: the region is famous for its truffles, particularly the elusive white truffle, and you can savour dishes infused with this prized delicacy in charming local restaurants across the region. Wine and olive oil lovers will find joy in Istria's vineyards and olive groves, offering tastings and insights into traditional production methods. Fresh seafood, often served with a Mediterranean twist, is a staple that you can enjoy at quaint waterfront eateries along the coastline.
One of the most enduring memories visitors take away from Istria is the warmth of its people. The locals are known for their friendly, welcoming nature and their willingness to share their traditions and stories with tourists. You'll find yourself immersed in the local way of life, whether you're exploring ancient towns or enjoying a meal in a family-run tavern.
Istria is easily accessible, with Pula Airport serving as a major gateway. Once you arrive, navigating the region is a breeze with well-maintained roads connecting major towns and villages. Language barriers are minimal, thanks to the widespread use of English, Italian, and German, alongside the local Croatian language.
Istria’s unique blend of pristine landscapes, rich traditions, and warm-hearted locals creates an experience that will linger in your memories long after you've returned home.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesChildren will never be lost for things to see and do in Istria. When visiting Pula, the incredible aquarium is a good starting point. Housed in an old fortress, this mighty aquarium offers a glimpse of all sorts of sea life, including sea turtles, seahorses and tropical fish, and features a marine biology lab.
Not so educational but certainly a lot of fun, Aqualand Istralandia near Novigrad is another water-based attraction that kids will love. This big water park packs in all the favourites, including the highest water slide in the land and a pirate lagoon. You can splash around some more at Poreč’s Aquacolors. Here, adults can enjoy the Crocodile Cave Bar (think cocktails served inside a giant croc head) while kids have a blast on Twister, Magicone and Windigo.
If your kids are into dinosaurs, the Dinopark Funtana is a must. About 10 minutes’ drive south of Poreč, the park incorporates all kinds of rides and entertainment, along with a mini zoo with much friendlier creatures. There is also a small museum devoted to dinosaurs, and fossilised remains of the real thing to see.
Around 30 minutes north-east of Pula, Glavani Park is the place to go for high-adrenaline adventures. Equipped with climbing nets, zip wires and an 11m-high swing, this is one of the largest adventure parks in Croatia. For go-karting, check out Motodrom Poreč, located next to another park of this type, Sky Fox. From here, it’s just a 5-minute drive to the colourful Papago Park which has around 30 species of exotic birds, including parrots, macaws and cockatoos.
In Višnjan, a visit to Tican Observatory is an unforgettable experience. Looking up at the stars is sure to inspire your kids, and visitors will get a tour of the observatory which is still used for scientific research. Make sure you check the opening times in advance, as the observatory is only open on selected evenings each summer.
If they would rather look deep in the ocean than into the sky, head for beautiful Rovinj. There are plenty of reasons to visit this Italianate gem, but children will particularly enjoy the semi-submarine. While the top part of the craft remains visible, the interior is below the waves, offering an unbeatable view of the jellyfish, crabs and various other creatures which inhabit the Adriatic.
