Location
About the surrounding area of Villa EvaniThe large island of Krk is one of Croatia’s most popular visitor destinations. If you arrive at Rijeka International Airport, you will already find yourself on Krk – even though the city it takes its name from is on the mainland. You can reach it via a mighty concrete bridge which is something of a landmark in its own right. Head to the beach at nearby Vos for a fantastic view of it from the Krk side.
Krk is within reach of the city of Rijeka and the Italian and Slovenian borders. While these excursions are easy, there’s plenty to see and do on the island itself. Krk Town is a good place to start, and many visitors are drawn to its lively seafront promenade. You can also visit the Frankopan Castle, which offers a fine sea view from its 12th-century tower. There are a few places of note in the walled Old Town, including St Quirinus’ Church and the Cathedral of the Assumption, and some lovely beaches along this stretch of coast.
The beaches are certainly one of the big draws of Krk, and Baška is one of the most popular beach destinations. The main beach can get very busy, but head east, and you should find some quieter options.
In mountainous surroundings, stunning Baška is also worth a look for St Lucy’s Church. This church is of particular significance in Croatian culture, as it was here that the ‘Baška Tablet’ was found. This 11th-century tablet contains the first reference to a Croatian king in the Croatian language, and while only a replica remains on site, you can find out a lot more from a video presentation and tour of the church.
Krk has some exciting activities waiting for you, too, with diving, rock climbing and wakeboarding among them. Perhaps the easiest way to get your adrenaline pumping is by visiting the Edison Zipline. Hold on tight, and you can enjoy the amazing views from this series of zip lines which covers 2km near Vrbnik. This seaside village is a delightful place to spend the day, its centre built high up on a rock above the ocean. There’s nowhere better to appreciate this view than from the terrace of one of Vrbnik’s excellent restaurants – and they serve excellent local wine as well.
If you do venture over to Rijeka, you’ll be in Croatia’s biggest port and one of its largest cities. Always bustling, the lively Korzo offers great shopping and dining, while 13th-century Trsat Castle sits high above it all, taking in the Rječina River, the Adriatic and Krk beyond.

Region
Krk, the largest island in the Kvarner Gulf, offers visitors an enchanting blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture. This island paradise, with its captivating landscapes, historic towns, and warm Mediterranean climate, has rightly earned its reputation as one of Croatia's top tourist destinations.
Krk's rugged and diverse geography is a significant part of its appeal. The island boasts a picturesque coastline with countless coves, bays, and pristine beaches to explore. For those looking to relax and unwind, Krk’s beautiful, serene beaches Baska Beach and Malinska Beach are perfect spots to unwind. The calm, crystal-clear waters and warm sun provide an ideal setting for a peaceful day by the sea.
The Adriatic Sea provides the perfect playground for water sports enthusiasts - kayaking, windsurfing and jet-skiing are all popular activities around the island. The crystal-clear waters are also perfect for snorkelling and diving. Many tour operators on the island offer family-friendly excursions where you can explore the underwater world and observe marine life together. Krk also has several marinas, making it a popular stop for sailors and boaters exploring the Adriatic.
Krk’s landscape also includes lush greenery and rolling hills, ideal for hiking and cycling. Numerous bike paths and trails wind through the miles of untouched nature. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or a novice, you can explore the island at your own pace or join one of the many bike tours on offer, enjoying the fresh air and breathtaking scenery. The serene countryside offers splendid vistas, and the scents of Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and lavender fill the air.
The city of Krk, the island's main hub, is a charming blend of history and modernity. The well-preserved ancient city walls and medieval architecture are a testament to its storied past. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Frankopan Castle, a magnificent fortress that dates back to the 12th century. The island also boasts numerous churches and chapels, including the Cathedral of St. Mary, which features Romanesque and Gothic elements, and the small church of St. Donatus, one of the oldest on the island.
Krk's culinary scene is a rooted in the Croatian lifestyle, emphasising locally sourced ingredients and flavours. The island's cuisine is known for its use of olive oil, fresh seafood, and an array of herbs. In the picturesque towns and villages, you'll find cozy family-run restaurants and taverns offering hearty traditional dishes like "šurlice," a homemade pasta, and "pašticada," a slow-cooked beef stew. The island is also renowned for its sheep cheese, such as “šur", and the exceptional local wine "Žlahtina," which pairs perfectly with the island’s fresh seafood. Dining in a konoba, a traditional Croatian tavern, allows you to savour the essence of Krk's cuisine while enjoying the warm hospitality of the locals.
While Krk itself has so much to offer, it also serves as a gateway to explore the wider Kvarner region and the nearby islands. A short ferry ride connects Krk to Cres, Rab, and other smaller islands, each with their own unique charm and attractions. The proximity to the mainland makes it easy to embark on day trips to cities like Rijeka and Opatija, famous for their historic architecture and buzzing cultural scenes.
Krk offers a diverse range of experiences for travellers seeking natural beauty, history, culture, and delicious cuisine. With its rich history, warm hospitality, and breathtaking landscapes, Krk has rightfully earned its place as one of Croatia's top tourist destinations. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a cultural experience, this “Golden Island” island has it all.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThere’s a lot for the kids to look forward to on the Croatian island of Krk. A real playground for sporting activity and a great beach destination, there’s plenty you can enjoy together too.
One of the island’s favourite family attractions is, however, underground. Situated in the village of Rudine, Biserujka Cave is well set up for visitors. You’ll find well-lit trails to follow and find more about the wildilife which inhabits this impressive cave. The remains of an ancient cave bear are one of the prime discoveries you can make at Biserujka.
Also of interest to nature lovers are the various aquariums found around the island. The Adriatic is the home of countless species which you can see at Krk Town’s Tropical Aquarium and the Aquarium-Terrarium, which include lizards, shellfish, seahorses and all kinds of colourful fish. There is also an aquarium in Baška, located in the centre of town on Kralj Tomislav Street.
Krk is big on water sports of all kinds, and you can enjoy everything from water-skiing to scuba diving there. Trips out in glass-bottomed boats, semi-submarines, and other seafaring craft are also great ways to share a memorable experience.
If water isn’t their thing, the Edison Zipline might just be. Even younger children can enjoy zipping down the lines, which extend for more than 2km amidst the beautiful Krk countryside. The sea views are spectacular, and it’s well worth booking your visit in advance to ensure you don’t miss out.
The beaches are great all over Krk, but Vela Luka on the south-eastern coast is very special. From Baška, you can either take a boat taxi or an invigorating hike through the mountains to reach this picturesque spot. Another local highlight is the Baška Viewpoint, about 20 minutes from Vela Plaza, which offers a spectacular view of the turquoise sea and its mountain backdrop.
Elsewhere on the island, you will find many pebble beaches, some of which have good facilities nearby, like cafés and playgrounds. At Meline Beach, you can even experience a mud bath.
If you fancy a trip across the bridge to Rijeka, don’t miss out on the city’s cultural attractions. Aside from the mighty Trsat Castle, this busy port offers numerous museums and galleries, including a Natural History Museum and Astronomical Centre. Tech-loving kids will get a kick out of Peek & Poke, Rijeka’s nostalgic computer museum.
