About the surrounding area of Villa CionOpatija, by the Kvarner Gulf, 13km west of Rijeka, was the chicest seaside resort for the Austro-Hungarian elite during the days of the Austro-Hungarian empire, as evidenced by the handsome belle epoque villas. It offers wonderful views of the neighbouring islands. The largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, Istria boasts family-friendly beaches, charming ports, stunning hilltop villages and mouth-watering cuisine that attract visitors from all over the world.
You can stroll down the Opatija Walk of Fame with many great Croatian names honoured. Tennis legend Goran Ivanisevic, genius inventor Nikola Tesla, musician Rade Serbedzija and writer Tin Ujevic and some names on this illustrious street. Why not take a selfie with the ‘Girl with the Seagull’, undoubtedly the most famous statue in Opatija. You can walk the entire 12km promenade between Volosko and nearly Lovran, tranquillity meeting energy at that most magical middle point! You will certainly build up an appetite for a meal in one of the many magnificent Mediterranean restaurants.
From the Opatija Riviera, you can visit the Golden island Krk by boat, firstly visiting the small islet of Kosljun where you can peruse the Franciscan monastery, the greatest cultural and museum centre of Croatia. Meandering through the old town of Krk, you can see Illyrian ramparts, the Frankopan castle and Krk Cathedral. You can also visit Vrbnik, most famous for its widely known white wine Vrbnicka Zlahtina. Why not taste homemade prosciutto and this local wine in a unique local taverna?
At the harbour city of Rijeka, take a walk along the town’s central Korzo promenade and explore its interesting Old Town. If you are up for some incredible panoramic views, be sure to visit the Trsat Castle. Great stay!
We had a great stay here. The villa has everything that is described and even more (e.g. a pool table in the basement).
Pool, Sauna and Whirlpool are great for relaxing.
We were a group of friends and also used the kitchen and the grill to make our own food which works very well.
To get to the supermarkets or restaurants you have to drive to the city (10-15 minutes). The view is great. -
