Opatija, by the Kvarner Gulf, 13km west of Rijeka, was the chicest seaside resort for the Austro-Hungarian elite during the days of the Austro-Hungarian empire, as evidenced by the handsome belle epoque villas. Meandering through the old town of Krk, you can see Illyrian ramparts, the Frankopan castle and Krk Cathedral. You can also visit Vrbnik, most famous for its widely known white wine Vrbnicka Zlahtina. Why not taste homemade prosciutto and this local wine in a unique local taverna?
 
At the harbour city of Rijeka, take a walk along the town’s central Korzo promenade and explore its interesting Old Town. Rijeka Airport is the nearest airport for Opatija. You could also fly to Trieste in Italy. There are direct buses from Trieste bus station to Opatija though we do suggest having a car to enjoy all of the surroundings in this area.
