Villa Inga sits in a beautiful location at the heart of the Makarska Riviera, with views of both the breath-taking Adriatic coastline and the dramatic Mount Biokovo. A lot of people get off the plane and jump straight on a ferry to stay on one the Croatian islands in this area, missing out on some of the most beautiful spots on the mainland, such as the lovely town of Makarska and its beautiful coastline.

The town of Makarska is just a few minutes’ drive away, becoming more and more popular with tourists each season. With the stunning Mount Biokovo as a backdrop, the scenery is breath-taking, whilst the mountain also provides protection to the beaches, creating a wonderfully mild climate. The long sandy beach with its crystal-clear water is backed by luscious pine-trees, walkways, luxurious hotels and upmarket restaurants.

The main square in Makarska is bursting with open-air restaurants and cafes, creating a charming, lively atmosphere perfect for an evening off cooking. Behind the church, in the shade, the daily open-air market sells fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, so you can pick up some ingredients to grill later on the villa’s barbecue, combining your favourite home recipes with the local produce. From the harbour you can take boat trips to the nearby islands, exploring their hidden coves and beaches all from the sea, some of the most popular trips head to Jelsa on Hvar and Zlatni Rat beach in Bol on Brac.

The main draw of this stunning area has to be the beaches, scattered along the coast, offering a mix of busy family beaches, to quiet sandy shores. The closest beach is Plaza Cvitacka, less than a 10-minute drive from you front door and offering a beautiful pebble shore and turquoise waters. With water ports including peddle-boats, banana rides and jet skis, families will be in heaven, with plenty to entertain young kids and adventurous adults!

The beautiful resort of Brela is just 10-minute down the coast, a family-friendly resort, with a picturesque pebble beach, voted as one of the most beautiful in the country – worth a visit! With the Mount Biokovo Nature Park, open from April to mid-November, there is also plenty to explore on land, with walking and hiking trails for all levels.

Region

Makarska, perched between the Biokovo mountain range and the glistening waters of the Adriatic Sea, is a stunning destination where nature's grandeur takes centre stage. The imposing mountains rise dramatically behind the town, creating a striking backdrop for the entire region. With its distinct Mediterranean climate, visitors can expect warm summers and mild winters, making it an ideal year-round destination.

The Riva - the town's seafront promenade - is a focal point of the community, where locals and visitors alike gather to soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere. Lined with palm trees and a variety of cafes, restaurants, and boutiques, the Riva is the perfect place to unwind, take in the scenic views of the sea and settle into the Croatian pace of life. As the sun sets over the Adriatic, Makarska comes alive with a vibrant nightlife scene. The Riva transforms into a lively hub of entertainment, with street performers, live music, DJ sets, and a chance to mingle with locals and fellow travellers.

If you're a history enthusiast, Makarska's rich heritage and historic sites will surely pique your interest. The Church of St. Mark, built in the early 18th century, stands as a testament to the region's strong Catholic tradition. The Baroque architecture and stunning altarpieces make it a notable religious landmark.

For a deeper dive into the past, the Makarska Franciscan Monastery, founded in the 16th century, houses an impressive collection of artefacts including ancient manuscripts and artwork. The monastery's cloister and church are architectural marvels in their own right. Within the complex, the Malacological Museum showcases an extensive collection of seashells, a testament to the region's maritime heritage.

The Makarska Riviera boasts a series of blue-flag beaches and crystal-clear waters, ensuring a perfect setting for relaxation and water activities. The most famous is the Makarska Beach itself, stretching for almost 2 kilometres and offering a plethora of water sports, sunbathing spots, and beachfront cafes. While sunbathing and swimming are the primary draws, you can also indulge in snorkelling, paddle-boarding, and jet skiing to experience the vibrant underwater world of the Adriatic.

Heading north along the Makarska Riviera, you’ll come to the town of Brela, famed for its pristine beaches. One of the best, Punta Rata, is often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. The crystal-clear waters and the iconic Brela Rock jutting from the sea make it a picture-perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming.

The Biokovo Nature Park, often overshadowed by the coast, offers a different but equally wonderful experience. Here, the rugged mountain terrain allows for hiking, trekking, and adventure in the heart of nature. There are several well-marked trails that lead you through lush forests, up to the highest peak of Sveti Jure (St. George), providing breathtaking panoramic views of the Adriatic and the surrounding islands.

Day trips to nearby destinations are also a great way to explore the broader region. The islands of Hvar and Brač are easily accessible by ferry and make for fantastic day excursions. Hvar is known for its beautiful old town and lavender fields, while Brač is famous for the stunning Zlatni Rat beach.

This enchanting coastal region, characterised by its stunning beaches, rugged mountains, and vibrant atmosphere, is undoubtedly a place that leaves a lasting impression. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to explore the diversity of the Dalmatian region. Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or simply in search of a relaxing coastal escape, Makarska offers something for every traveller.

Makarska becomes more and more popular with tourists each year, particularly for families with children. The villa itself boasts plenty of room for kids, with a cot and high-chair available for the littlest ones, and large king-size beds that will make any child feel like one of the adults as they sink into the mattress each evening! The main living space is open plan, perfect for spending time together as a family, even when kids are slumped on the sofas after busy tourist days and adults are chatting around the table or cooking in the kitchen! The stunning views will captivate any kid, perfect for when you want to relax. They can splash about in the pool, enjoying the peaceful setting. There is no safety fence around the pool so young children will need to be supervised, but you can do it from the comfy outdoor seating and sun loungers.

In Makarska and along the bay, there is no shortage of activities for children. There are playgrounds, sailing, diving, snorkelling, kayaking, peddle boats, banana boats and jet skiing, just to name a few of the activities on offer! There are also plenty of half or full day boat trips on offer, travelling around the islands to different bays and beaches, offering the chance to snorkel and swim and on some occasions stopping off at beach bars and restaurants.

The city of Split is about a one-hour drive away from Makarska, offering an abundance of sites for kids and adults to enjoy together. Older kids will enjoy climbing to the top of the Cathedral of St.Duje bell tower, whilst they’ll all love renting bikes to explore the city, with children’s seats and electric bikes available for the smallest ones.

The beautiful resort of Brela is just 10-minutes’ down the coast from the villa, a family-friendly resort, with a lovely pebble beach, voted as one of the most beautiful in the country. Brela is bursting with relaxed restaurants offering menus that even the pickiest of kids will enjoy.

Local food often includes fresh seafood and vegetables, simply grilled ideal for children. There is also the local classic of squid ink risotto that with its rich black colour will either be loved or hated by kids, we suggest you try it first!
