Location
About the surrounding area of Villa AntaraHistoric Omiš is the place to be for an action-packed stay in Dalmatia. High-energy activities draw many visitors to Omiš, either on or above the River Cetina. Try canyoning, rafting, canoeing and the like, or take an unforgettable zip-line ride across the canyon itself. As well as its stunning fortresses and pirate history (made fun for families), Omiš offers beautiful beaches.
You need not go far if it’s those beaches you’re after! The long, sandy Velika Plaza is centrally located, while the pebble beaches of Brzet and Slavinj are a short walk from town. Head west towards Split or east towards Makarska, and there are plenty more beaches to choose from, many of them Blue Flag rated. Alternatively, set sail to the islands of Brač, Hvar and Šolta for many more.
Omiš’s 13th-century Mirabella fortress is well worth heading up to, with stunning views as far as Brač, and those from 15th-century Starigrad are just as good. Drive further out into the mountains, and the Biokovo Skywalk will provide an unforgettable experience – about an hour’s drive from Medići, this glass-bottomed viewing platform is a major attraction in the mountains. Another local vantage point of note is the site of the Mila Gojsalič statue, located high in the hills around 5km from Omiš.
Omiš makes an excellent base for visiting many other destinations and is full of chilled restaurant terraces and bars. To the west, Split offers world-class landmarks like the vast Diocletian’s Palace and the Cathedral of St Domnius, while Makarska, a similar distance east, is the jewel of Makarska Riviera.
Only Dubrovnik can rival Split as a Croatian culture hub – among its big hitters are the Croatian National Theatre, the Split Gallery of Fine Arts and the Meštrović Gallery. It boasts countless family-friendly attractions, excellent shopping and the glamorous Riva waterfront, Žnjan Beach and Marjan Forest Park when you need a moment to recharge. If Split is busier than you would like, you could always try Trogir – a destination that’s just as beautiful but generally quieter. Further west, it’s closer to Split Airport than the city itself and home to the towering St Lawrence Cathedral.

Region
The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure trove of stunning landscapes and historic towns, and Omis, situated halfway between the famous port city of Split and the energetic town of Maksarka, is no exception. With its rich history, scenic backdrop, and a plethora of attractions, Omis stands out as a unique and captivating destination for those seeking to explore the charm of Croatia. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its dramatic geographical setting, which is dominated by the imposing Cetina River Canyon and the Mosor Mountain Range.
The old town of Omis, with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses, is a place where history and culture converge. It’s a charming place to explore on foot and soak up the local way of life. There are a number of historic churches that you’ll come across while exploring - the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Peter, and the Church of St. Rocco, which all showcase intricate architectural details and a sense of reverence. The old town is also home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and local shops, it’s an excellent spot to savour authentic Croatian dishes and find unique souvenirs.
One of the most prominent historical attractions in the town is the Mirabella Fortress, often called Peovica. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this fortress was built during the 13th century and was used as a hideout by the notorious Omis pirates who terrorised the Adriatic Sea. Today, visitors can climb up the steep path to the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the town, the coast, and the surrounding landscapes.
Omis boasts a pristine stretch of coastline with a variety of beaches, each catering to different tastes. One of the most popular is the sandy beach at the mouth of the Cetina River, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Adventurous spirits may prefer the pebbly beach of Brzet, known for its perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Just a short drive from Omis, there's the small village of Stanici, which is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's a serene place to relax and escape the crowds often found in more touristy locations.
The Cetina River is a defining feature of Omis, and one of the most exhilarating activities here is to take a rafting excursion along its emerald waters. The river cuts through the impressive Cetina Canyon, creating a thrilling white-water rafting experience that appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The journey offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, lush forests, and the charming villages that dot the landscape.
The nearby Biokovo Nature Park is an outstanding natural attraction. The Biokovo Mountain Range, part of the Dinaric Alps, offers incredible hiking opportunities, with well-marked trails leading to panoramic viewpoints where you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea and the islands scattered along the coast. The juxtaposition of the rugged mountain terrain and the azure waters is simply stunning and will leave a lasting impression.
The history, natural beauty, and cultural vitality of Omis combine to create a destination that is rich in character and charm. Whether you're seeking adventure on the Cetina River, exploring the medieval fortresses, or simply savouring the local cuisine, Omis has something to offer every traveller who ventures to this utterly enchanting corner of the Dalmatian coast.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesDalmatia has plenty to keep the kids entertained, whatever their age. Omiš offers endless sporting activities on land or water, like hiking, cycling, rafting or canoeing. They can try canyoning, paragliding or scuba-diving, horse-riding or paintballing, or hold on tight as they zip line 150m over the Cetina Canyon. Children as young as seven can enjoy the zip-line experience with experienced guides on hand to make the crossing with them.
Omiš is excellent for beach life too. The 800m Velika Plaza is a good family choice where there are cafés and lots of facilities, and there are quieter pebble beaches just a short walk from town. You’ll have plenty of choices for a family meal in Omiš – everything from local seafood and Croatian specialities to pizzas, burgers and other familiar favourites.
Many excursions are possible from Omiš, whether heading into the mountains, out to the islands or the magnificent Krka National Park for boat trips and bike rides. There are city attractions too, with Split around 40 minutes along the coast. This must-see city is ideal for a family day out, with an aquarium, a semi-submarine, and a giant indoor play centre at Poljud Stadium.
Froggyland, Split’s unforgettable frog museum, continues to charm children and adults alike, while Znjan Beach offers paddle boats, trampolines, bouncy castles and lots more fun. The hilly Marjan Forest Park, located west of the city centre, will let them burn off energy and offer rewarding sea views.
Not far from Krka National Park, the city of Šibenik is a fun place to be in June/July, as it hosts the excellent International Children’s Festival. All sorts of activities and performances occur around the city, from music and dance to children’s theatre and street parades. Historic Šibenik also packs in some year-round family attractions, including Solaris Aqua Park and an Aquarium Terrarium.
If you head to Split or Makarska, you can cross the Adriatic to the island of Brač. Among the sights that kids will love are the iconic Zlatni Rat beach, Sutivan’s nature park and Skrip’s Olive Oil Museum.
