However you will likely want to visit the larger town of Omis a short drive away, to access a wider range of amenities. And the charming stretch of coves is only 8km away, stretching along the Omis Riviera. They benefit from calm, shallow, crystal clear waters and sheltered surroundings, making them ideal for families.
The old pirate town of Omis will provide a good selection of nightlife, a large shopping centre and an array of sporting activities including rafting, zip lining and canyoning. The Venetian fortress that looks out over the town from the hillside and a 17th century parish church are charming landmarks worth a visit. There are also opportunities here to arrange day trips to neighbouring Islands, the National Parks of Krka and Pritvice, and the beautiful city of Dubrovnik.
For a lovely day trip, head towards the coast, at the foot of the Mosnjica Mountains, and you’ll find the old town of Ducé, and a cluster of other villages of preserved stone houses, quant little streets, quant old squares around historic churches. All surrounded by lush vegetation and magnificent views of the Adriatic Sea and the impressive Islands that sprinkle the horizon.

Region
The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure trove of stunning landscapes and historic towns, and Omis, situated halfway between the famous port city of Split and the energetic town of Maksarka, is no exception. With its rich history, scenic backdrop, and a plethora of attractions, Omis stands out as a unique and captivating destination for those seeking to explore the charm of Croatia. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its dramatic geographical setting, which is dominated by the imposing Cetina River Canyon and the Mosor Mountain Range.
The old town of Omis, with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses, is a place where history and culture converge. It’s a charming place to explore on foot and soak up the local way of life. There are a number of historic churches that you’ll come across while exploring - the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Peter, and the Church of St. Rocco, which all showcase intricate architectural details and a sense of reverence. The old town is also home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and local shops, it’s an excellent spot to savour authentic Croatian dishes and find unique souvenirs.
One of the most prominent historical attractions in the town is the Mirabella Fortress, often called Peovica. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this fortress was built during the 13th century and was used as a hideout by the notorious Omis pirates who terrorised the Adriatic Sea. Today, visitors can climb up the steep path to the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the town, the coast, and the surrounding landscapes.
Omis boasts a pristine stretch of coastline with a variety of beaches, each catering to different tastes. One of the most popular is the sandy beach at the mouth of the Cetina River, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Adventurous spirits may prefer the pebbly beach of Brzet, known for its perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Just a short drive from Omis, there's the small village of Stanici, which is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's a serene place to relax and escape the crowds often found in more touristy locations.
The Cetina River is a defining feature of Omis, and one of the most exhilarating activities here is to take a rafting excursion along its emerald waters. The river cuts through the impressive Cetina Canyon, creating a thrilling white-water rafting experience that appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The journey offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, lush forests, and the charming villages that dot the landscape.
The nearby Biokovo Nature Park is an outstanding natural attraction. The Biokovo Mountain Range, part of the Dinaric Alps, offers incredible hiking opportunities, with well-marked trails leading to panoramic viewpoints where you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea and the islands scattered along the coast. The juxtaposition of the rugged mountain terrain and the azure waters is simply stunning and will leave a lasting impression.
The history, natural beauty, and cultural vitality of Omis combine to create a destination that is rich in character and charm. Whether you're seeking adventure on the Cetina River, exploring the medieval fortresses, or simply savouring the local cuisine, Omis has something to offer every traveller who ventures to this utterly enchanting corner of the Dalmatian coast.

The Villa was lovely and peaceful
As a family, we recently stayed at Villa Gata near Omis. The Villa was about a 10 minute drive into the mountains from Omis. We had difficulty finding it late at night after a delayed flight but our host Kate came out to meet us and showed us the way. The Villa was lovely and peaceful and away from the crowds in Omis, but you certainly need a car to get anywhere. Kate was extremely helpful in recommending things to do and places to see and where to park. This was really helpful to us as first time visitors to the area. She organised the booking of two great boat trips to the Islands for us.
The pool area was very peaceful and relaxing with lovely views of the mountains. The pool was a great size. The Villa was very clean and comfortable and we had a great holiday. Thanks especially to Kate.

Well equipped, attractive vilka
Really enjoyed our stay here. Quiet location but Omis nearby and other attractions. Helpful and friendly owners. Some access problems for the less mobile member of the party but otherwise everything we needed.

Beautiful place to stay!
We were a family of four, and the villa had everything we needed and more! It is just as beautiful as the photos suggest!
Kate & Ivan, the owners, were amazing and so lovely! Kate helped us book some trips and got us a discount, she also took the time to cook us a lovely traditional Croatian meal, one evening, whiçh we all really enjoyed.
The pool area was wonderful, and the kids liked the saltwater more than the usual chlorine!
It was really nice to be up on the hillside, but still only 10mins drive from Omis, for lovely restaurants, the beach and heading out for boat trips!
Thanks so much for helping us have one of our favourite holidays and I would recommend the villa to everyone! -
Stunning villa, beautiful setting
Looked after really well and the villa is so well thought out. Peaceful location yet near to great sights and plenty to do. But then again, if you don’t want to leave the villa, there’s plenty to do there as well. We hope to return!

We spent a wonderful few days in the house
The decor is very modern, the rooms are spacious and stylish and the pool is awesome! Our children between the ages of 14 - 18 were able to recover well and the pool table was busy. Kate was always available for questions, the answers to our emails came in each case shortly. The hospitality, we were warmly and confidently received and even cooked by Kate - she served us a wonderful peka. The house is located in Gata, about 10 minutes drive from Omis and the beach. The ride up into the mountains was a relaxed ride away from the hustle and bustle in the peace and seclusion - except horses, barbecues and sheep you hear nothing in the vicinity of the house. The shop in the village has everything necessary and can be reached on foot in 5 minutes. All in all, a highly recommended villa.

Fabulous Villa - Gorgeous Scenery
Our family of 4 have just returned from a weeks stay at Villa Gata and we have rated it as one of our best holidays ever. The Villa is extremely well appointed and has everything you would need - and more! The host was very welcoming and was such a thoughtful and informative owner. Our intention was to take trips out every day and explore everything that the stunning Dalmatian Coast has to offer, but because the Villa and pool were so amazing, we ending up spending most of our time relaxing poolside in the sun! We would definitely recommend this Villa.
