About the surrounding area of Villa MacieVilla Macie is in a fabulous location along the Dalmatian coast near to both Omis and Split, and is perfect for those who want to sightsee and explore. From here you’ll be able to enjoy rafting, canoeing and zip-lining on the Cetina river, or be able to take a boat tour to the popular islands of Hvar or Brac. While you’re staying in the village of Duce, you’ll more than likely end up at Bracera Tavern, a popular restaurant that serves up a wide range of Mediterranean dishes. There are also plenty of pizzerias in the area, and even more variety if you venture into Omis - known as the city of pirates, which is a great place for sightseeing, shopping and eating! Seafood is always on the menu here, with massive sharing platters (which vary depending on the catch of the day) being a popular option. If you’re after Dalmatian favourites, you won’t be disappointed in Omis; you’ll find plenty of places where you can enjoy traditional Croatian fare such as Peka (a meat and vegetable dish), as well as dishes made with frogs, eels and river fish.
Omis is the new kid on the block when it comes to being popular as a tourist destination, but its miles of uncramped beaches and its position on the Cetina river has certainly cemented it there. This is definitely the place to be if you want to avoid the crowds; the whole stretch of coast from Omis to Split is just one huge beach - much of it without a soul to be seen.
Duce nightlife is laid back and chilled - often beginning and ending in the beachside cafes, so if you want to dance and drink the night away your best bet is to again, head to nearby Split or Omis where you’ll find more of a vibrant scene.

Region
The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure trove of stunning landscapes and historic towns, and Omis, situated halfway between the famous port city of Split and the energetic town of Maksarka, is no exception. With its rich history, scenic backdrop, and a plethora of attractions, Omis stands out as a unique and captivating destination for those seeking to explore the charm of Croatia. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its dramatic geographical setting, which is dominated by the imposing Cetina River Canyon and the Mosor Mountain Range.
The old town of Omis, with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses, is a place where history and culture converge. It’s a charming place to explore on foot and soak up the local way of life. There are a number of historic churches that you’ll come across while exploring - the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Peter, and the Church of St. Rocco, which all showcase intricate architectural details and a sense of reverence. The old town is also home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and local shops, it’s an excellent spot to savour authentic Croatian dishes and find unique souvenirs.
One of the most prominent historical attractions in the town is the Mirabella Fortress, often called Peovica. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this fortress was built during the 13th century and was used as a hideout by the notorious Omis pirates who terrorised the Adriatic Sea. Today, visitors can climb up the steep path to the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the town, the coast, and the surrounding landscapes.
Omis boasts a pristine stretch of coastline with a variety of beaches, each catering to different tastes. One of the most popular is the sandy beach at the mouth of the Cetina River, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Adventurous spirits may prefer the pebbly beach of Brzet, known for its perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Just a short drive from Omis, there's the small village of Stanici, which is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's a serene place to relax and escape the crowds often found in more touristy locations.
The Cetina River is a defining feature of Omis, and one of the most exhilarating activities here is to take a rafting excursion along its emerald waters. The river cuts through the impressive Cetina Canyon, creating a thrilling white-water rafting experience that appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The journey offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, lush forests, and the charming villages that dot the landscape.
The nearby Biokovo Nature Park is an outstanding natural attraction. The Biokovo Mountain Range, part of the Dinaric Alps, offers incredible hiking opportunities, with well-marked trails leading to panoramic viewpoints where you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea and the islands scattered along the coast. The juxtaposition of the rugged mountain terrain and the azure waters is simply stunning and will leave a lasting impression.
The history, natural beauty, and cultural vitality of Omis combine to create a destination that is rich in character and charm. Whether you're seeking adventure on the Cetina River, exploring the medieval fortresses, or simply savouring the local cuisine, Omis has something to offer every traveller who ventures to this utterly enchanting corner of the Dalmatian coast.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesVilla Macie is spacious and beautifully decorated, and children will enjoy the chance to explore the rooms, take a dip in the pool, and play in the fenced-off grounds. There are plenty of shaded areas, and an outdoor eating area where you’ll all be able to enjoy eating outdoors as a family. Parents will want to be aware that there are stairs inside and outside of the villa, and small children will need to be supervised on balconies and around the pool and hot tub.
Families with children will delight in Villa Macie’s close proximity to a gorgeous sandy beach - perfect for playing and exploring. There are plenty of activities to enjoy in the surrounding areas, including boat tours, horseback riding and zip-lining - which will certainly appeal to older children. Of all the things to do in Omis, enjoying the foam of the rapids on the Cetina River has to be one of the best ways a family can spend an active day together. Starting at Pensisci and finishing at Radmanove Mlinice, rafting the 9km route on the Cetina is a day to remember.
If you’re holidaying here with children be sure to visit nearby Split. You’ll find plenty here to delight kids of all ages, including Zvonac Park; a dinosaur-themed playground that is super popular with the little ones. Once the kids have worn themselves out clambering over the play equipment and running around in the fresh air, you’ll all enjoy a stroll along the waterfront promenade to grab some refreshments.
It’s also well-worth planning a trip to Diocletian’s Palace - a super fun place for children to explore, full of twists, turns and stairways, and presided over by a black sphinx perched high in the courtyard. If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you’re in for a treat too, as you might recognise this as the location where Daenerys Targaryen keeps her dragons while she’s in Meereen! The palace is an incredibly popular destination with tourists and locals alike, so we suggest going early to avoid the crowds!
Kids will also love visiting the waterfront promenade Zapadna Obala to watch the boats, it’s a pedestrian-only area that gives the children a safe place to roam. Bacvice Beach is also a must-visit while you’re in Split. One of the rare sandy beaches in the region, it’s popularity is due in part to its size and location - nestled deep within a cove, the waves are small and the water shallow - making it a great destination beach for those with children. Be warned though - it can get quite busy!
