Omis in Croatia is a small Central Dalmatian town and harbour between Split and Makarska, surrounded by gorges in the mouth of the Cetina River. In the past, Omis was notorious because of the pirates of Omis, whose ships were a centuries-long symbol of retaliation, courage and strength. The evidence of this history can be found on every corner of the Omis Riviera. In the ancient town of Omis, Omis churches and fortresses are silent stone reminders of the power of the infamous Omis pirates. Today, it is the centre of Omis Riviera, one of the most beautiful parts of Croatia's Adriatic Coast.

Region
The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure trove of stunning landscapes and historic towns, and Omis, situated halfway between the famous port city of Split and the energetic town of Maksarka, is no exception. With its rich history, scenic backdrop, and a plethora of attractions, Omis stands out as a unique and captivating destination for those seeking to explore the charm of Croatia. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its dramatic geographical setting, which is dominated by the imposing Cetina River Canyon and the Mosor Mountain Range.
The old town of Omis, with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses, is a place where history and culture converge. It’s a charming place to explore on foot and soak up the local way of life. There are a number of historic churches that you’ll come across while exploring - the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Peter, and the Church of St. Rocco, which all showcase intricate architectural details and a sense of reverence. The old town is also home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and local shops, it’s an excellent spot to savour authentic Croatian dishes and find unique souvenirs.
One of the most prominent historical attractions in the town is the Mirabella Fortress, often called Peovica. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this fortress was built during the 13th century and was used as a hideout by the notorious Omis pirates who terrorised the Adriatic Sea. Today, visitors can climb up the steep path to the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the town, the coast, and the surrounding landscapes.
Omis boasts a pristine stretch of coastline with a variety of beaches, each catering to different tastes. One of the most popular is the sandy beach at the mouth of the Cetina River, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Adventurous spirits may prefer the pebbly beach of Brzet, known for its perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Just a short drive from Omis, there's the small village of Stanici, which is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's a serene place to relax and escape the crowds often found in more touristy locations.
The Cetina River is a defining feature of Omis, and one of the most exhilarating activities here is to take a rafting excursion along its emerald waters. The river cuts through the impressive Cetina Canyon, creating a thrilling white-water rafting experience that appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The journey offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, lush forests, and the charming villages that dot the landscape.
The nearby Biokovo Nature Park is an outstanding natural attraction. The Biokovo Mountain Range, part of the Dinaric Alps, offers incredible hiking opportunities, with well-marked trails leading to panoramic viewpoints where you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea and the islands scattered along the coast. The juxtaposition of the rugged mountain terrain and the azure waters is simply stunning and will leave a lasting impression.
The history, natural beauty, and cultural vitality of Omis combine to create a destination that is rich in character and charm. Whether you're seeking adventure on the Cetina River, exploring the medieval fortresses, or simply savouring the local cuisine, Omis has something to offer every traveller who ventures to this utterly enchanting corner of the Dalmatian coast.

Excellent!
This is definitely the best villa we have stayed in as a family, it is absolutely beautiful. The bedrooms are very elegant, each with excellent en-suite bathrooms, and the kitchen is very well stocked. This leads on to a very stylish open living area with floor to ceiling windows looking out onto THAT VIEW. It’s difficult to put the view into words as it is so spectacular and a joy to wake up to every morning. The outside area is great with access to light shade in the form of netted canopies - not full shade like a parasol but enough to keep the strong heat at bay. The local town of Omiš has some really good restaurants but that’s about as far as we went to be honest. We had a lovely relaxing week and didn’t venture out too much which was exactly what we needed. Darko and his family are very welcoming, greeting us at the villa when we arrived and coming back at the end to say bye. They also supplied us with some basics on our arrival, including a bottle of local wine and some bread, cheese and cured meats. We will definitely stay in this villa again as it would be difficult to find anything better - we may even leave it to explore the area next time! Highly recommended!

Magnificent
Wonderful villa located 140 metres above sea level in the hills of Mimice. Be warned, the road to the villa is not easy, very steep, narrow and windy - I would not like to arrive at night! The villa owner Darko met us at the supermarket just off the main road and guided us in - this was welcomed as we wouldn’t have located it otherwise.
Once in our splendid isolation we did not want for anything. The weather was fabulous, pool amazing, views over the tree trops and over the Brac Channel sublime.
Every room in the villa was decorated beautifully by the villa owner Natasa to impeccable taste. We have never stayed in such a well equipped rental ever. The WiFi, Air Conditioning, cleanliness, TV (which was smart so had Netflix, YouTube etc) were all great. The owners also laid on a welcome buffet for us including wine which went down a treat! All in all it was amazing. A tip - stock up your supplies on one of the many Lidl supermarkets en route from Split.
The swallows in early evening also an amazing spectacle. -
So beautiful!
This house is incredible! Beautifully furnished to an extremely high standard. The location is a total oasis of calm with the house perched at the top of a hill overlooking the sea, just above the lovely town of Mimice - under an hour's drive from Split airport (although please beware that the coast road gets very busy around Omis - and Split on the return - so would highly recommend taking the alternative route suggested).
The pool is wonderful and bigger than expected and the owners are very friendly and welcoming. They greeted us with a welcome platter of food and a fridge well stocked with the essentials so we didn't have to go out straight away. So appreciated! They are also happy to help with excursions. We did canyoning from Omis, which the children loved (aged 11 and 13); and a boat trip to the Islands which we highly recommend - the town of Hvar in particular is stunning. The rest of the week was spent swimming in the crystal clear waters at local beaches and exploring nearby towns. Some days we didn't leave our lovely house.
We all loved Croatia and would definitely visit both the country and this property again. Thank you! -
An amazing place - idyllic and beautifully-equipped
This is without doubt the most wonderful place we have ever stayed in as a family - and we have travelled in many countries around the world.
We went with three boys and we're blown away by the quality of the house, which has been beautifully designed from top to bottom. The photos show it off well, but it is even better in real life, and the four bedrooms and bathrooms are all the height of luxury, each with their own stylish design touches. It is an idyllic part of the world. The views over Brac are wonderful. And nearby are Omis and Brela, where we did fabulous canyoning and sea kayaking trips. Mimice is off the beaten track, rather than being in an over-developed part of the Croatian coast. We also hadn't quite realised that the villa is high up above Mimice and so we had no other properties near us. All we could see were hills, sea and forest. You feel very special here. In terms of the property, it has a very large open plan living and kitchen area, which takes up the whole ground floor. We loved chilling here as a family, playing games and cards and so on (there are games in the house but they are a bit hidden in one of the storage rooms).
The pool (and view) is the star of the property and feels even larger than it looks in the photos. As our boys play with beach balls a lot, we were a bit worried about what would happen when the ball goes over the edge, but in fact there are steps to walk down to a small garden below the pool to retrieve items.
There is also a barbecue, and - as with everything in the villa - the owners leave it stocked with what you need, in this case coal and firelighters, so that you can light a barbecue without having to go out to get anything.
There is a supermarket just a 5 minute drive down the road.
Overall, the owners, Natalia and Drago, who are very charming and helpful, have thought of everything to make your stay as relaxing as possible. And Anke - who we booked it through - is very swift at responding during the booking process.
This was, for us, a little bit of paradise. We will be back!
