Location
About the surrounding area of Villa PalmoLocated at the mouth of the Cetina River, Omis has much to offer. The Old Town is very attractive and the main attraction. You can certainly get some exercise visiting the Fortress Mirabella with its many stairs and also Fortress Starigrad. It is roughly an hour’s climb to the peak of the mountain behind Omis to visit this 15th-century fortress. It is also known as Fortica Fortress. There is a pretty walking trail close to the villa to the fortress. The Omis Summer Festival is great fun with capella singing in the churches and squares around the town. Velika Plaza is a 700m long sandy beach in the centre of the town with a playground, volleyball, football and windsurfing. Slavinj and Brzet Beaches are pebble beaches 10 minutes from the centre. Camp Galeb Beach is on the way towards Split and is gorgeous.
The Cetina river is very dramatic and is the place for thrilling adventures! Its enthralling attractions include zip lining across the canyon, kayaking, rafting in the rapids and paragliding. It is a total dream for anyone adventurous and courageous. This phenomenal canyon with its lush, sensational scenery is a wonderful day out.
Not far away is the gorgeous town of Split. You can take a walking tour or segway tour to discover the historical attractions such as the Golden Gate, the Diocletian’s Palace and Saint Domnius Cathedral. The Diocletian’s Palace was built in 305AD and is probably the most famous attraction of Split. The Old Town is a maze of streets and cobblestoned lanes. People’s Square is at heart, brimming with cafes and restaurants. It is also trendy to stroll along the riva. With its palm trees and colourful buildings, it is very pretty. You can take trips to the beautiful Hvar and Brac islands.
Makarska is extremely popular for its nature park, nightlife, harbour, beach, shopping and dining in the restaurants and cafes in Kacic Square. The Baroque Church of St Mark overlooks the square. There is a daily open-air market selling fruit and vegetables. The harbour is very attractive, again with many restaurants, and offers day trips to Jelsa on Hvar and Zlatni Rat Beach in Bol on Brac. Punta Rata, on the edge of Brela, is ideal for families as the seabed slopes gently into a shallow sea. The Makaska Riviera is 38 miles long, running from Brela in the north to Gradac in the south.
You may also want to visit the stunning Trogir on its own tiny island, Sinj, Imotski and Vrgorac.

Region
The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure trove of stunning landscapes and historic towns, and Omis, situated halfway between the famous port city of Split and the energetic town of Maksarka, is no exception. With its rich history, scenic backdrop, and a plethora of attractions, Omis stands out as a unique and captivating destination for those seeking to explore the charm of Croatia. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its dramatic geographical setting, which is dominated by the imposing Cetina River Canyon and the Mosor Mountain Range.
The old town of Omis, with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses, is a place where history and culture converge. It’s a charming place to explore on foot and soak up the local way of life. There are a number of historic churches that you’ll come across while exploring - the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Peter, and the Church of St. Rocco, which all showcase intricate architectural details and a sense of reverence. The old town is also home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and local shops, it’s an excellent spot to savour authentic Croatian dishes and find unique souvenirs.
One of the most prominent historical attractions in the town is the Mirabella Fortress, often called Peovica. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this fortress was built during the 13th century and was used as a hideout by the notorious Omis pirates who terrorised the Adriatic Sea. Today, visitors can climb up the steep path to the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the town, the coast, and the surrounding landscapes.
Omis boasts a pristine stretch of coastline with a variety of beaches, each catering to different tastes. One of the most popular is the sandy beach at the mouth of the Cetina River, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Adventurous spirits may prefer the pebbly beach of Brzet, known for its perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Just a short drive from Omis, there's the small village of Stanici, which is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's a serene place to relax and escape the crowds often found in more touristy locations.
The Cetina River is a defining feature of Omis, and one of the most exhilarating activities here is to take a rafting excursion along its emerald waters. The river cuts through the impressive Cetina Canyon, creating a thrilling white-water rafting experience that appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The journey offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, lush forests, and the charming villages that dot the landscape.
The nearby Biokovo Nature Park is an outstanding natural attraction. The Biokovo Mountain Range, part of the Dinaric Alps, offers incredible hiking opportunities, with well-marked trails leading to panoramic viewpoints where you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea and the islands scattered along the coast. The juxtaposition of the rugged mountain terrain and the azure waters is simply stunning and will leave a lasting impression.
The history, natural beauty, and cultural vitality of Omis combine to create a destination that is rich in character and charm. Whether you're seeking adventure on the Cetina River, exploring the medieval fortresses, or simply savouring the local cuisine, Omis has something to offer every traveller who ventures to this utterly enchanting corner of the Dalmatian coast.

Harry Potter fans will love visiting Split. They will recognise the cellar in the Diocletian’s Palace where Daenerys kept her dragons. Climbing to the top of the bell tower of St Domnius Cathedral is also very popular. It boasts the best view of Split. A visit and picnic at Klis Fortress, on the hillside overlooking Split, is a good day out for the family. It was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones.
The Krka National Park is roughly 1 ½ hour from the villa but is a totally amazing place to visit. Children will love swimming, taking the boat rides, standing under spring water waterfalls and jumping off rocks! Don’t forget to take your swimming costumes! The scenery and especially the waterfalls are absolutely stunning. There are actually 5 official entrances to the park, the two main ones being Skradin and Lozovac.
Makarska has many ice-cream parlours which children love. The Makarska Observatory is open every weekday evening. There are special steps for small children to observe the clear skies through the telescope. They might even see Mars, Saturn and the moon. There are so many lovely beaches along the Makarska Riviera and plenty of watersports to enjoy. Zlatni Rat Beach on the island of Brac is one of the best paradise beaches in the whole of Croatia!
