Location
About the surrounding area of Villa RonjaOne of the most picturesque, and popular, places on the Istrian coast, Rovinj is a must. For visitors to Croatia, only Dubrovnik can rival it on numbers, and those who come are charmed by Rovinj’s pretty harbour and Italianate feel.
Rovinj isn’t huge but it offers a pleasing array of restaurants within walking distance of the waterfront, along with boutiques, craft and souvenir shops. Cool bars, chic coffee stop-offs and great gelato all add to the vibe. The town’s most prominent landmark is the church of St Euphemia, complete with bell tower modelled on that of Venice’s St Mark’s Cathedral.
Several islands lie off the coast of Rovinj, so boat trips make for pleasurable excursions – the impressive archipelago which makes up Brijuni is particularly popular. Those into diving might like to join an organised dive to see the wreck of Austrian steamer, the Baron Gautsch, which lies beneath the waters of Rovinj. You have very nice beaches south of the Old Town, with Mulini, Cuvi and Cisterna all highly rated.
Rovinj isn’t big on named attractions, but there are a few museums and galleries, boosting Rovinj’s reputation as an arty kind of town. The Royal Heritage Museum has a good collection of Italian art, while the striking red Baroque building that houses Rovinj City Museum has yet more, along with temporary exhibitions around themes such as architecture.
In summer, arts and music festivals give the town a further cultural kick. Mosey down to the main square and you are sure to find something happening, while Grisia, the main street in the Old Town, hosts an open-air art show each August which draws the crowds.
Heading up the coast, the city of Poreč is well worth a stop. There are plenty of historic attractions, including the 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Numerous family-friendly parks like Aquacolors, Papago Park and Dinopark Funtana mean Poreč is the ideal destination if you’re travelling with children, and the lovely Sveti Nikola island is just a short boat ride away. Fancy hiring a bike? Cyclists can follow the scenic Parenzana Trail, once a railway track that went all the way to Trieste.

Best Suited For: All AgesIstria is perfect for kids, delivering family attractions by the bucketload. Why not go underground and explore Croatia’s caves? Baredine Cave lies a bus ride away from the centre of Poreč, while the large cave of Špilja Mramornica is just outside Novigrad and boasts 13m-long stalagmites. Festini Caves, near Zminj, also has a play park and mini-farm. These caves are a 10-minute drive from Istra Adventure, which offers fun days in buggies, kayaks, quad-bikes and the like.
The region is home to some excellent water parks too, with Poreč’s Aquacolors one of the big hitters. It’s full of colourful water slides like Freefall, Windigo and Turbolance as well as more relaxing spaces. You will also find a big choice of rides at Aqualand Istralandia near Novigrad. For something drier but equally exhilarating, try Glavani Park, an outdoor adventure park with high ropes, a climbing wall and a human catapult, about 40 minutes from Rovinj.
Animal lovers will enjoy seeing the exotic birds at Papago Park in Poreč, including parrots, cockatoos and ducks. There are several aquariums in Istria, including one at Rovinj’s Rudjer Boskovic Institute, with more than 300 marine species. Pula Aquarium, situated in the mighty Fort Verudella, is another place to get to know the creatures that inhabit the Adriatic. Meanwhile in Bale, the Istrian Butterfly Garden is a lovely place to visit, as is Umag’s Squirrel Park.
If your kids are into dinosaurs, Dinopark Funtana is the place to go. About 15 minutes’ drive south of Poreč, this park has dino-fun galore, perfect for a family day out. Poreč also offers go-karting for younger children, teens and adults at Motodrom, and paintballing, obstacle courses and zip-lines at the nearby Sky Fox.
Istria is such a beautiful region, it’s well worth just taking it easy and admiring the surroundings. A boat cruise around the stunning Brijuni National Park, north of Pula, is one great way to do it. The park consists of an archipelago of 14 islands and you can visit the largest, Veli Brijun, to see the safari park and ride the tourist train. Look out for Koki the yellow-crested cockatoo, Veli Brijun’s no. 1 celebrity.

Beautiful villa with covered pool
New villa in a private location and not far from the town of Bale Valle (small shops and restaurants within walking distance). Everything you need is available (but no shower gel or shampoo). Across the street a public playground. You also get an access card for parking at the nearby Mon Perin beach (less than 10 minutes by car). After a short contact, all requests for the check-in and check-out time that I had changed were addressed.
Don't miss out! Reserve now and get a full refund if you change your mind within 48hrs.
