This part of Croatia has some wonderful sights to explore, with the stunning waterfalls one of the main attractions of Krka National Park. This picturesque region is perfect for walking or cycling, while a boat ride along the River Krka will lead you to the old city of Šibenik.

The city’s best-known landmark is St James’ Cathedral, which holds UNESCO World Heritage status and is constructed entirely from stone sourced from nearby islands. Around halfway between other must-see cities, Split and Zadar, Šibenik’s impressive Old Town is home to numerous fascinating buildings. The city’s restaurants excel in showcasing fine Croatian food and wine.

Šibenik is just a short drive from good beaches and serves as a departure point for pretty islands like Prvić and Zlarin. It’s also well placed for visits to the lovely medieval town of Trogir, and Primošten where the finest local wine is produced. The Kornati Islands National Park, consisting of 140 uninhabited islands, is another local highlight.

A city full of historical sights, Šibenik is a fine place to discover the real Dalmatia. Located close to the magnificent Krka National Park and roughly halfway between Zadar and Split, it’s also great for taking a trip to nearby islands or the resort of Vodice with its many beaches.

The Old Town is the part of Šibenik you will want to concentrate on. The city’s finest attraction is undoubtedly the World Heritage Site, St James’ Cathedral. Made entirely of stone, the cathedral dates back to the 15th century and is a fusion of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Its most notable feature is depicting 71 faces on the back wall, some rather grotesque – all were based on real citizens.

Another nod to Šibenik’s past comes in the form of its four forts – St Michael’s, St John, Barone and St Nikola. You will need to take a boat to reach the last one, but the other three are all accessible on foot from the city centre. St Michael’s Fort has been restored in recent years and now features an open-air theatre. You can also discover the origins of the city at this important landmark. In summer, the nearby Barone Fort doubles as an open-air cinema.

Look out for the St Lawrence Monastery, too – its beautiful garden, laid out in medieval style, is a lovely place to stop. Filled with herbs, fruit trees and colourful plants, local schoolchildren regularly maintain the garden.

Close to the cathedral, you’ll find the Šibenik City Museum, housed in the Rector’s Palace. Also not far away is the Aquarium Terrarium, with tropical fish, lobsters, an octopus and even some lizards. Visit the city in summer, and you may catch the annual International Children’s Festival, which Šibenik has hosted for more than 60 years – much of the action takes place on the streets so that you may stumble upon musical performances, theatre, dance and all sorts of other family-friendly entertainment.

The city is full of excellent restaurants which showcase the best Adriatic cuisine as well as many others. The region is a major wine producer, so look out for the highly-rated local red, babić. An excursion out of town to the Baraka Winery will allow you to learn more about Croatian wine, or you could enquire about the list on offer at eateries like Michelin Star Pelegrini. Not only is the food top-notch and the wine expertly selected, but it also has one of the best views of the cathedral you’ll find.

For a day out admiring Croatia’s natural beauty, it has to be Krka National Park. Easily accessible from Šibenik, the park has 17 dramatic waterfalls, biking and hiking trails and endless areas of the countryside – it would take days to see it all. Still, guided tours are available to show you highlights like Visovac Island, the impressive Roški Slap waterfall.

Region

Cradled along the shimmering shores of the Adriatic Sea, Šibenik is an ancient coastal city that sits equidistance from the larger and busier cities of Zadar and Split. By contrast to these larger destinations, Šibenik offers a glimpse into a more local way of life. With its well-preserved medieval core, magnificent fortresses, and the ethereal beauty of Krka National Park at its doorstep, Šibenik is a destination that captivates the hearts of travellers seeking an authentic Croatian experience.

Šibenik's Old Town is home to one of Croatia’s ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the iconic Cathedral of St. James. The cathedral is a true masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, a testament to human ingenuity and craftsmanship. The intricate frieze that adorns the cathedral's exterior tells stories from the Bible and local history, leaving visitors in awe of the skill and artistry of the craftsmen who dedicated their lives to this grand project. Stepping inside, the awe-inspiring interior of the cathedral continues to leave visitors breathless with its intricate stone vaulting and a serene atmosphere.

A visit to the Šibenik City Museum reveals the rich maritime history of the region, showcasing ancient ship models, navigational instruments, and artefacts from the city's seafaring past. Šibenik's maritime heritage is also celebrated during the annual International Children's Festival, a tradition that dates back to 1958 and unites children from all over the world in a cultural exchange of art and music. Children from around the world participate in various artistic and cultural activities, making it a unique experience for young travellers.

Šibenik’s calendar comes alive with festivals and cultural events throughout the year. The Šibenik Evening of Dalmatian Chanson is a tribute to the region's musical heritage, where local and international artists perform the soulful songs of Dalmatia. For those seeking a more contemporary cultural experience, the Terraneo Music Festival brings renowned musicians and electronic music enthusiasts to the city. This eclectic blend of events ensures there's always something happening in Šibenik, from lively street performances to classical concerts in historic settings.

Just a short drive from the city, Krka National Park is a haven of cascading waterfalls, lush greenery, and crystalline rivers. The park's centrepiece is the Skradinski Buk waterfall, a stunning series of cascades that plummet into a serene pool. The park is not only a feast for the eyes but also a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including various bird species and aquatic life. Hiking trails and wooden walkways wind through the park, allowing visitors to explore its beauty at their own pace.

A boat trip along the Krka River offers a unique perspective on the park's natural wonders and historical sites, including the Visovac Monastery, a peaceful island sanctuary that has stood for centuries.

Šibenik is a gateway to the stunning Dalmatian islands that dot the Adriatic Sea. Day trips or longer island-hopping adventures are easily arranged from the city's port. Islands like Kornati, Prvić, and Zlarin offer pristine beaches, clear waters, and the opportunity to experience the tranquility of island life. Kornati National Park, also known as the "nautical paradise," is a sailor's dream, with its rugged islands and countless coves. Charter a boat or join an organised tour to explore this unique archipelago, which is a protected natural wonder and a playground for divers and snorkelers.

Whether you're wandering the picturesque cobbled streets of the Old Town, basking in the natural splendour of Krka National Park, or savouring traditional dishes in local eateries, Šibenik promises an unforgettable journey through history and the magic of the Mediterranean.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

There is plenty for the kids to enjoy around Šibenik, with lots to see and do within a short drive of Villa Meli. One of the best-loved family destinations is the Aquapark Dalmatia water-park which lies around 10 minutes’ drive from the city centre. Located at the Solaris beach resort, the park is open to all and has a great range of slides and pools, as well as a lazy river which has a surprise in store. There is also a special zone for the youngest children.

Also worth a look is the city centre Aquarium Terrarium with its many sea creatures native to the Adriatic. Young kids will love this place – it’s just a couple of minutes from St James’ Cathedral, so if you’re visiting this landmark it’s easy to combine the two. If they are more into birds than fish, there’s a chance to learn falconry at the Sokolarski Centre in Dubrava, about 10 minutes from Šibenik. This rescue centre in the woods cares for hundreds of injured birds before returning them to the wild and provides educational tours.

A short drive from the city, Plaza Banj – or Banj Beach – has a huge array of facilities, offering everything from beach volleyball and basketball to a skate park, children’s playground and an open-air cinema. With cafés and restaurants too, there’s enough here to keep everyone happy for hours.

Nature-loving kids will be in their element at Krka National Park, a vast area of natural beauty which is easy to reach from Šibenik. It’s worth planning your trip to get the most out of it, as there is a lot here – guided tours can show you the best bits, which include some spectacular waterfalls, Lake Visovac and the River Krka itself.

The Barone Fort is another nice place for kids – there is a lovely ship-shaped playground which enjoys some amazing views out to sea, and there’s a café and plenty of room to run around and play. All the city’s fortresses are worth visiting, and often hold outdoor events. Teenagers may be surprisingly interested in the city’s historic sights, at least if they are fans of Game of Thrones – like many of Croatia’s cities, Šibenik featured as a filming location. Amazing buildings like the Old Town Hall and St James’ Cathedral certainly exude star quality.

For an interactive look at the area’s past, the Dalmatian Ethno Village can be found at the Solaris resort to the south of the city. With cobbled streets, an old watermill, craft and cooking demonstrations, it’s all about local traditions and will be just one of the memorable experiences they take home from Šibenik.
