Location
About the surrounding area of Villa GornjeThe city of Split is vibrant and busy, combining historic sights with an irresistible waterfront that’s full of life. You could easily spend a few days in Split and only scratch the surface, so it’s well worth planning your time there in advance.
The biggest attraction in town is the huge Diocletian’s Palace, overlooking the harbour. This Roman palace is so large, it actually contains many of the city’s other well-known sights within its boundaries. Among those you may want to check out are the 13th-century Cathedral of St Domnius with its 57m bell tower, which you can climb to get the best possible view of the region. Also within the palace walls are Peristyle Square, a meeting place and cultural venue which often hosts events, and the nearby Jupiter Temple.
Other notable squares in town include the People’s Square with its café terraces, and the grand Republic Square which faces the sea. The glamorous Riva promenade is one of the city’s highlights and will help you get your bearings, along with the four gates to Diocletian’s Palace – named after bronze, iron, silver and gold.
Split hosts regular festivals that bring music and entertainment to the streets, while its year-round cultural offerings include the Croatian National Theatre, Split Gallery of Fine Arts and the Meštrović Gallery – a homage to Croatia’s great 20th-century sculptor. The green spaces of the large Marjan Forest Park to the west of the city are perfect for taking a relaxing break, and the region’s largest aquarium is ideal to keep children entertained and out of the sun for a while. You could also take a boat trip out to the islands of Brač and Šolta, or the magnificent Blue Cave.
Outside of Split itself, there are many other destinations worthy of your time. On the River Cetina, popular Omiš is around 25 minutes from Gornja Sitno and offers an array of sporting activities based on or over the river. You can go rafting, canyoning, canoeing or cross the water on a zip-line.
Backed by the Dinara mountains, Omiš has lots of restaurants and café terraces, as well as plenty of pirate-themed attractions – a nod to its past. If you fancy a taxing climb, you could also make the ascent to one of the town’s fortresses, which offer rewarding views.
Another place to admire Croatia’s natural beauty is the vast Krka National Park. About one hour from Split, it’s well worth making the journey, with stunning waterfalls, riverboat tours and much more waiting for you.

Region
The city of Split, with its magnificent historical sites, scenic coastal vistas, and a welcoming local atmosphere, is a must-visit destination for travellers in search of the perfect balance of culture, relaxation, and adventure. Nestled along the captivating Dalmatian Coast, it’s a vibrant mix of modern life and ancient history, making it a thriving hub for both locals and tourists.
The heart of Split is the historic Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands as one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world. Built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century, this massive complex now forms the nucleus of the city. Within the palace walls, you'll discover a labyrinth of narrow streets, charming squares, and historic buildings. The Peristyle, an open-air courtyard, is a central gathering place, and both the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and the Temple of Jupiter showcase remarkable examples of ancient architecture. Strolling through the ancient streets, you'll come across quaint shops, lively cafes, and local markets.
The Riva promenade is the city's vibrant waterfront hub. Lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, it's the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely stroll, sip a coffee, or dine while overlooking the stunning Adriatic Sea. The palm-lined promenade offers a lively atmosphere day and night, with street performers and events throughout the year.
Just a short walk from the from the centre of Split is Marjan Hill, a pristine nature park that offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city streets. The park features lush greenery, jogging trails, and stunning viewpoints overlooking the city and the sea. It's an ideal place for hiking, picnicking, or simply enjoying the natural beauty of the Mediterranean.
The Split region offers a variety of beautiful beaches. Bacvice and Ovcice are two popular choices conveniently located near the city centre. The sandy shores are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and trying your hand at the local beach sport, picigin. Exploring further along the coast, you'll find numerous rocky coves and pebble beaches, each with their own unique charm.
For adventure seekers, Split offers a wide array of outdoor activities and water sports. From kayaking and paddle-boarding to sailing and scuba diving, there's something for everyone who wants to experience the Adriatic up close. Split is a great base for taking boat trips to the nearby islands, where you can explore underwater caves and secluded beaches.
Croatian cuisine is known for its fresh, local ingredients and Mediterranean influence. You’ll be able to savour delicious seafood, grilled meats, and traditional recipes. To experience authentic Croatian flavours, visit the local konoba (taverns) that serve traditional dishes like pasticada (a slow-cooked beef stew), and peka (baked meat and vegetables). Pair your meal with local wines and olive oils for a complete gastronomic experience.
Split is a city of remarkable beauty and historical significance. Whether you're exploring ancient streets, soaking up the sun on pristine beaches, or indulging in delectable local cuisine, Split promises an unforgettable experience. Its blend of stunning natural landscapes, ancient history, and a welcoming Mediterranean lifestyle makes it a destination that offers something for every traveller.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThere’s loads for kids to look forward to in and around Split. City highlights include the biggest aquarium in the region, which is the perfect place to discover the many creatures which inhabit the Adriatic. There are sharks, eels, lobsters and many more species on display. Another way to take a look is the semi-submarine which provides a great view of the ocean’s creatures in its underwater observatory. The rest of the craft remains, reassuringly, above sea level.
Also, look out for the eccentric Froggyland, a must-see museum the like of which you won’t find anywhere else. The room is full of stuffed frogs doing human things, like playing tennis, working as a blacksmith or performing in a circus. And that’s stuffed as in ‘used to be real’. It’s an unforgettable sight which kids will love.
A large area of parkland, Marjan Hill, is found west of the city centre. With lots of stairs to climb, this hilly park is a good place for an energetic walk and offers lovely views out to sea. If beaches are their thing, take a bus ride out to sandy Znjan Beach, about 5km from the centre of Split, which also has an array of things to play with, in or on – bouncy castles, trampolines, paddle boats and arcades, for example.
If you want to travel further than Split, the kids are bound to love Krka National Park. With its famous seven waterfalls, this big park is a fantastic outdoor destination. Activities like cycling and swimming are on offer in certain areas of the National Park.
Alternatively, visit the city of Šibenik in summer and you may catch its International Children’s Festival – this well-established and well-regarded festival brings all sorts of activities and entertainment to Šibenik and takes place every June/July. The city is also the home of the Solaris Aqua Park – another big family favourite.
Finally, don’t miss Omiš for some great adventures that you can enjoy together. The Cetina Canyon offers all sorts of thrilling activities – rafting, canoeing, scuba-diving and more, but perhaps the most amazing experience is zipping across the canyon on a zip-line. Children who are aged 7 or above can join in the fun, which takes you 150m above the river. There are also great family beaches around Omiš, with the sandy Velika Plaza and pebbly Brzet providing contrasting choices.

Wonderful stay
We had a wonderful stay and can heartily recommend this house. The Villa Gornje is in excellent condition and extremely clean. From the terrace you have a great view over the mountains. There is a small mini-market in the village for small purchases, for larger purchases you have to drive a little further. Anika & her family are great hosts and accompanied our stay with loving gestures. We especially enjoyed an evening in Lydia's restaurant recommended by Ankica. The food and location were excellent (at reasonable prices) and Lydia was a great hostess! Thank you for a great holiday!
