Location
About the surrounding area of Villa NasutaA jewel of the Adriatic, Split offers an enchanting combination of natural beauty, culture and history. Its landmarks are bankable and worthy of their status – with Saint Domnius’ Cathedral and Diocletian’s Palace always able to draw a crowd. Beyond these, Split is a rewarding city to discover, with the glamour of the Riva waterfront and the invigorating Marjan Forest Park offering up yet more sides of the city.
There is no shortage of museums and galleries in Split – the city is big on culture and art. The Split Gallery of Fine Arts, Split City Museum and the Meštrović Gallery, showcasing the work of the country’s greatest sculptor, Ivan Meštrović, are among the high points. You will find more of his greatest work at the nearby Kaštelet too – intricate wooden carvings depicting the life of Christ.
With fragrant pine forests, botanical gardens and satisfying walking routes, the expansive spaces of Marjan Forest Park form the city’s ‘green lung’. No visit to Split would be complete without a detour to Marjan – the tranquillity and stunning ocean views make it a very special place. The Roman ruins of Diocletian’s Palace are perhaps Split’s best-known attraction – guided walking tours of this and other Split landmarks provide a good introduction to the history of the city.
Riva is where modern life in Split comes to the fore – the promenade is the place to be for coffee by day or drinks at night, and there’s always something happening. No wonder they call it the ‘living room’ of Split.
Various other coastal locations are within a reasonable distance of the city and are well worth a visit. Look out for the wooden ships at Jesenice, and the pirate-themed attractions and river centric sports of Omiš.
