Location
About the surrounding area of Villa GatsbyThe Dalmatian village of Petrcane is located just 12km north of the popular tourist destination of Zadar. It is a 900-year-old fishing village with a small local population of less than a thousand people. The bay is surrounded by two peninsulas, Punta Radman and Punta Skala. It is one of the region's most picturesque and charming areas, with its tiny stone houses, scenic promenade, and idyllic village centre.
Many beaches are just waiting to be explored, with Beach Petrcane being the most popular. Located directly on the promenade, this elongated bay is mainly pebble, with green pine trees providing pleasant shade on hot days and the wonderfully clear waters inviting you to take a dip. After a day of total relaxation, why not stop at the beach bar before visiting the pretty harbour and then pop for a bite to eat at one of the wide range of cafes and restaurants in the area?
Petrcane is ideally located for discovering some of the best attractions of the Zadar region, including the picturesque town of Nin, and the island of Vir, an island connected by a bridge to the mainland. The old town of Zadar itself is only a short distance from the village and is famous for its many attractions, including the Roman forum. Here you'll experience a more metropolitan flavour, with restaurants, bars and cafes serving delicious local cuisine to suit everyone, as well as lots of opportunities to shop for souvenirs.
A visit to the 'Monument to the Sun' is an absolute must if you visit this part of Croatia. Created by artist Nikola Basic and located on the waterfront, the monument is a 22-metre disc representing the sun. It soaks up solar rays all day only to dazzle visitors with them in the form of coloured patterns as night falls. There are also smaller discs representing the solar system's planets, all of which radiate their shimmering glow. The adjacent art installation, 'Sea Organ', is another famous area attraction. These underwater pipes are formed by cleverly cutting steps into a section of the waterfront promenade; these underwater pipes produce musical notes when filled with water, creating a haunting harmonica effect.

Region
The Zadar region, anchored by the vibrant city of Zadar, boasts a rich history, breathtaking natural beauty, and a cultural tapestry that dates back millennia. Situated along Croatia's stunning Dalmatian coast, and shaped by the dramatic Velebit mountain range, Zadar is a unique destination offering a captivating array of experiences.
Zadar city is known for its ancient Roman ruins, white sand beach, and rugged coastline. Take a wander through the world of the Old Town's labyrinthine streets, which are a wonder to explore, brimming with historical treasures. Make sure to stop at the Church of St. Donatus, an architectural masterpiece and a prominent example of Byzantine construction and one of the most famous pre-Romanesque churches in Croatia.
Zadar's architectural prowess isn't limited to its historical buildings; it also embraces modern art installations. The Sea Organ, designed by architect Nikola Bašić, is an ingenious creation consisting of underwater pipes and chambers that produce hauntingly beautiful sounds as the waves of the Adriatic Sea wash over it. It's a serene place to watch the sunset, often accompanied by an equally impressive light show from the nearby Greeting to the Sun installation, which comes alive with vibrant colours after dusk.
The city's waterfront promenade, dotted with cafes, bars, and restaurants, provides the perfect setting for relaxed evenings. You can pass away the hours while savouring a leisurely meal and enjoying the sea views with watch boats sailing past. Don't forget to sample the local cuisine, which includes fresh seafood, pasticada (a traditional beef stew), and the world-famous Pag cheese. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or rakija, a strong fruit brandy, to complete the culinary experience.
The Zadar region is renowned for its proximity to a collection of stunning islands, each with its own unique character. Ugljan, often referred to as the "Green Island," is known for its lush vegetation and charming fishing villages. The island offers a serene escape from the bustle of city life, with numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring unspoiled beaches.
Dugi Otok, or the "Long Island," is a true gem of unspoiled natural beauty. The island is known for its rugged coastline, pristine coves, and the famous Saharun Beach, with its white sands and crystalclear waters. It’s also home to Telascica Nature Park, a protected area that encompasses stunning cliffs, saltwater lakes, and a diverse range of flora and fauna.
Back on the mainland, and just a couple of hours out of the city you’ll find one of the most renowned natural attractions in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is a land of cascading waterfalls, interconnected emerald lakes, and lush forests, with a network of well-maintained trails that guide visitors through this natural wonder. Wooden boardwalks allow you to get up close to the waterfalls, making it a family-friendly destination.
The Zadar region offers more than just natural beauty. The local markets, such as Zadar's Green Market, provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in Croatian culture. Here, you can explore stalls filled with fresh produce, local crafts, and artisanal products, experiencing the flavours and craftsmanship of the region. Zadar is also home to a variety of unique traditions and cultural festivals. Local celebrations, like the annual regatta of traditional boats or performances of 'Klapa' a cappella singing are both integral parts of the region's cultural identity.
The Zadar region is a microcosm of Croatia's diverse and enchanting way of life, with something to offer everyone that visits. It's a place where history, nature, and culture converge to create a harmonious and multifaceted destination. Whether you're hiking through national parks, swimming near waterfalls, exploring ancient cities, or savouring traditional cuisine, the Zadar region promises an unforgettable experience for all. To visit Zadar is to step into the heart of Croatia and experience its multifaceted charm.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesVilla Gatsby is an ideal accommodation choice for families holidaying with children. The spacious open plan layout, choice of double or twin bedrooms, grassy, shaded infield, and a private pool all lend themselves to a memorable holiday for little ones, where they can play and swim in safety. There are no stairs to worry about, minimising trips and falls, and the wooden terrace is flat, spacious and easy to navigate. There’s no barrier around the pool, and it’s possible that the area around it could become slippery when wet, so parents will want to make sure that children are well supervised while playing in the vicinity.
The village of Petrcane is characterised by its mild Mediterranean climate, clear waters and beautiful beaches, so it’s no wonder the area is a hit with children of all ages. One of the most popular beaches with families visiting Petrcane is Punta Radman, a predominantly pebble beach that features sandy areas, giving you the best of both worlds. You should be aware that one part of this beach belongs to the nearby Pinija Hotel, and an entrance fee is charged to all except hotel guests. Further along the coast is Nela Beach Club, an utterly admission-free pebble beach that offers a volleyball court, pirate camp, open gym and a bar. Nela is popular with older children and teens due to the facilities and activities here, and they often play rock, pop, and Latin music.
Taking a family stroll through the village itself is a lovely experience, and you’ll find a number of lively cafes, restaurants and fresh produce markets to enjoy that cater to all palates. The trails that lead from the village centre through the nearby olive fields are perfect for biking and hiking, both popular pastimes with tourists who visit this region.
The small and dreamy town of nearby Nin is well worth visiting if you are holidaying with the kids - popular with families thanks to its unique long, flat sandy beaches and the opportunity to try kayaking and windsurfing. Known as the cradle of Croatia, Nin is home to many historical sites and museums that might interest curious young minds. The 4-metre high statue of Gregory Nin is one of the town’s most famous attractions; this bishop was one of Croatia’s most influential personalities, and it is said that rubbing the toe of the bronze statue will bring good luck - it makes for an amusing photo for Instagram if nothing else!
