Location
About the surrounding area of Villa MajiaVilla Majia is located in the tiny village of Poljica Brig, famous for its donkey ranch, 'Ranc Dar Mar'. There is a grocery store and restaurant in the village, and the beach is just a stone's throw away - but it is the nearby city of Zadar, known for its cultural and historical sights, cosmopolitan restaurants and bars big draw for tourists visiting this area. The master of suspense, film director Alfred Hitchcock once reportedly described Zadar as showcasing the 'most beautiful sunsets in the world' - so we highly recommend coming to judge for yourself. The best spot to watch with a drink in hand is the Brazil bar, which sits alongside the famous Monument to the Sun, a 22-metre disk that soaks up the sun's rays during the day to dazzle visitors come nightfall with coloured light patterns.
Adjacent to this spectacular piece of interactive artwork is the Sea Organ, and an art installation made up of steps with underwater pipes that emit musical notes with the movement of the tide. If you're visiting Zadar, both of these attractions are a must-see that will delight visitors of all ages.
One of the country's best beaches, Saharun, is just a short ferry ride from Zadar. It is a sandy beach, unusual for Croatia, where you'll find mainly pebble beaches. Saharun is often compared to the Caribbean, thanks to its white sands and deepening turquoise shallows. The beach isn't busy outside of July and August, making it a firm favourite with holidaymakers.
Foodies will be thrilled to know that Zadar is crammed with excellent fish restaurants that favourably compare prices to those further down the coast. With lots of modern eatery options that feature outdoor terraces and spectacular views, you'll be able to enjoy popular dishes including John Dory fillet, Zadar truffles and gnocchi, olive oil-drenched seafood bruschetta, baked octopus and potatoes, cuttlefish stew, flaked sea bass and spider crab with black tagliatelle.

Region
The Zadar region, anchored by the vibrant city of Zadar, boasts a rich history, breathtaking natural beauty, and a cultural tapestry that dates back millennia. Situated along Croatia's stunning Dalmatian coast, and shaped by the dramatic Velebit mountain range, Zadar is a unique destination offering a captivating array of experiences.
Zadar city is known for its ancient Roman ruins, white sand beach, and rugged coastline. Take a wander through the world of the Old Town's labyrinthine streets, which are a wonder to explore, brimming with historical treasures. Make sure to stop at the Church of St. Donatus, an architectural masterpiece and a prominent example of Byzantine construction and one of the most famous pre-Romanesque churches in Croatia.
Zadar's architectural prowess isn't limited to its historical buildings; it also embraces modern art installations. The Sea Organ, designed by architect Nikola Bašić, is an ingenious creation consisting of underwater pipes and chambers that produce hauntingly beautiful sounds as the waves of the Adriatic Sea wash over it. It's a serene place to watch the sunset, often accompanied by an equally impressive light show from the nearby Greeting to the Sun installation, which comes alive with vibrant colours after dusk.
The city's waterfront promenade, dotted with cafes, bars, and restaurants, provides the perfect setting for relaxed evenings. You can pass away the hours while savouring a leisurely meal and enjoying the sea views with watch boats sailing past. Don't forget to sample the local cuisine, which includes fresh seafood, pasticada (a traditional beef stew), and the world-famous Pag cheese. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or rakija, a strong fruit brandy, to complete the culinary experience.
The Zadar region is renowned for its proximity to a collection of stunning islands, each with its own unique character. Ugljan, often referred to as the "Green Island," is known for its lush vegetation and charming fishing villages. The island offers a serene escape from the bustle of city life, with numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring unspoiled beaches.
Dugi Otok, or the "Long Island," is a true gem of unspoiled natural beauty. The island is known for its rugged coastline, pristine coves, and the famous Saharun Beach, with its white sands and crystalclear waters. It’s also home to Telascica Nature Park, a protected area that encompasses stunning cliffs, saltwater lakes, and a diverse range of flora and fauna.
Back on the mainland, and just a couple of hours out of the city you’ll find one of the most renowned natural attractions in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is a land of cascading waterfalls, interconnected emerald lakes, and lush forests, with a network of well-maintained trails that guide visitors through this natural wonder. Wooden boardwalks allow you to get up close to the waterfalls, making it a family-friendly destination.
The Zadar region offers more than just natural beauty. The local markets, such as Zadar's Green Market, provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in Croatian culture. Here, you can explore stalls filled with fresh produce, local crafts, and artisanal products, experiencing the flavours and craftsmanship of the region. Zadar is also home to a variety of unique traditions and cultural festivals. Local celebrations, like the annual regatta of traditional boats or performances of 'Klapa' a cappella singing are both integral parts of the region's cultural identity.
The Zadar region is a microcosm of Croatia's diverse and enchanting way of life, with something to offer everyone that visits. It's a place where history, nature, and culture converge to create a harmonious and multifaceted destination. Whether you're hiking through national parks, swimming near waterfalls, exploring ancient cities, or savouring traditional cuisine, the Zadar region promises an unforgettable experience for all. To visit Zadar is to step into the heart of Croatia and experience its multifaceted charm.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesWith its playground area, games room, private pool, and tennis and basketball courts, Villa Majia is an ideal accommodation choice for families travelling with children. The addition of extra beds, a cot and a high chair make the villa a good option for children of all ages. With the added luxury of a beach and restaurant just 5 km from the property, it's no wonder that Villa Majia is popular with the kids!
The sleepy village of Poljica Brig doesn't have much in the way of attractions, but it is home to the Ranch Dar Mar donkey ranch, where the kids will enjoy feeding the donkeys and seeing the pigs, geese, dogs and chickens. If you're visiting the region with the kids, it's well worth visiting nearby Zadar, where the narrow streets are pedestrian-only and stroller-friendly. Here you will all be able to sample local delicacies on offer at the stalls and markets, as well as keep an eye out for the local sights, including the shaming pillar, the old post office, and the grand Cathedral and Church, where you can marvel at the architecture and soak up the history.
Down at the waterfront, you'll find playgrounds in shady spots where the kids can burn off some energy while you relax in the Sun before strolling along the promenade and enjoying the food stalls and the Sea Organ. Be sure to bring the kids back here as the Sun sets, so they can enjoy the 'Monument to the Sun' and play among the colour-changing glass plates.
The city has a variety of museums within its walls, sure to delight and entertain children of all ages, including the insect exhibit, the gold and silver exhibition, and the museum of illusions - that is, if the kids don't get distracted by all the ice cream shops and pizza parlours along the way! The Italian influence is clear here, nowhere more so than in the area's cuisine, so you'll find plenty of pasta and pizza restaurants - foods always popular with the kids! But suppose you fancy trying some local Croatian cuisine. In that case, there are many local Konobas to visit where you can enjoy traditional lamb and fish dishes and a Maraska Liqueur for the adults!
