The small village of Vinjerac lies on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast and serves as a good base for exploring the beautiful surrounding area and the region’s better-known cities. While not full of landmark sights, the village is pleasantly historical, and the quaint harbour offers lovely views.

Just across the water, you’ll find the Paklenica National Park, a mountaineering destination that attracts climbers from across the world. The rugged limestone landscape – a land of spectacular caves, canyons and cliffs – is ideal for adventurous hikers, and there are many established routes to explore. There are also some areas that offer cycling routes.

You won’t need to be experienced in such sports to enjoy Paklenica, with guidance available for beginners and those who just want to appreciate the stunning scenery. Passes for one day or multiple days are available if you want to visit the park. Head further north, and you can also visit the beautiful Plitvice Lakes, while the also spectacular Krka National Park is closer still, located just north of Šibenik.

Elsewhere, the region offers historic cities with top-class attractions. It’s easy enough to travel to magnificent Šibenik or Split from Vinjerac – they are around 60 and 90 minutes away, respectively. Closer still is the city of Zadar, a destination which is becoming ever-more popular.

Offering island excursions and water-sport adventures, Zadar has another interesting water-based attraction in the form of its Sea Organ – a musical experiment powered by the waves. The same architect also created the solar-powered Sun Salutation with its fantastic light show. Old town sights such as Zadar Cathedral, the Forum and the Church of St Donat also bring visitors to the city.

You are sure to want to see Šibenik too, a significant city around halfway between Zadar and Split. Its finest attraction is undoubtedly the World Heritage Site, St James’ Cathedral. This stone-built cathedral dates back to the 15th century and is a fusion of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Look out for the wall of 71 grotesque faces based on citizens of the city.

Another nod to Šibenik’s past comes in the form of its four forts – St Michael’s, St John, Barone and St Nikola. St Michael’s Fort has been restored in recent years and now features an open-air theatre. You can also discover the origins of the city at this important landmark. In summer, the nearby Barone Fort doubles as an open-air cinema.al wonders of the nearby Paklenica National Park ensure there are lots of scenic excursions to take.

Region

The Zadar region, anchored by the vibrant city of Zadar, boasts a rich history, breathtaking natural beauty, and a cultural tapestry that dates back millennia. Situated along Croatia's stunning Dalmatian coast, and shaped by the dramatic Velebit mountain range, Zadar is a unique destination offering a captivating array of experiences.

Zadar city is known for its ancient Roman ruins, white sand beach, and rugged coastline. Take a wander through the world of the Old Town's labyrinthine streets, which are a wonder to explore, brimming with historical treasures. Make sure to stop at the Church of St. Donatus, an architectural masterpiece and a prominent example of Byzantine construction and one of the most famous pre-Romanesque churches in Croatia.

Zadar's architectural prowess isn't limited to its historical buildings; it also embraces modern art installations. The Sea Organ, designed by architect Nikola Bašić, is an ingenious creation consisting of underwater pipes and chambers that produce hauntingly beautiful sounds as the waves of the Adriatic Sea wash over it. It's a serene place to watch the sunset, often accompanied by an equally impressive light show from the nearby Greeting to the Sun installation, which comes alive with vibrant colours after dusk.

The city's waterfront promenade, dotted with cafes, bars, and restaurants, provides the perfect setting for relaxed evenings. You can pass away the hours while savouring a leisurely meal and enjoying the sea views with watch boats sailing past. Don't forget to sample the local cuisine, which includes fresh seafood, pasticada (a traditional beef stew), and the world-famous Pag cheese. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or rakija, a strong fruit brandy, to complete the culinary experience.

The Zadar region is renowned for its proximity to a collection of stunning islands, each with its own unique character. Ugljan, often referred to as the "Green Island," is known for its lush vegetation and charming fishing villages. The island offers a serene escape from the bustle of city life, with numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring unspoiled beaches.

Dugi Otok, or the "Long Island," is a true gem of unspoiled natural beauty. The island is known for its rugged coastline, pristine coves, and the famous Saharun Beach, with its white sands and crystalclear waters. It’s also home to Telascica Nature Park, a protected area that encompasses stunning cliffs, saltwater lakes, and a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Back on the mainland, and just a couple of hours out of the city you’ll find one of the most renowned natural attractions in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is a land of cascading waterfalls, interconnected emerald lakes, and lush forests, with a network of well-maintained trails that guide visitors through this natural wonder. Wooden boardwalks allow you to get up close to the waterfalls, making it a family-friendly destination.

The Zadar region offers more than just natural beauty. The local markets, such as Zadar's Green Market, provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in Croatian culture. Here, you can explore stalls filled with fresh produce, local crafts, and artisanal products, experiencing the flavours and craftsmanship of the region. Zadar is also home to a variety of unique traditions and cultural festivals. Local celebrations, like the annual regatta of traditional boats or performances of 'Klapa' a cappella singing are both integral parts of the region's cultural identity.

The Zadar region is a microcosm of Croatia's diverse and enchanting way of life, with something to offer everyone that visits. It's a place where history, nature, and culture converge to create a harmonious and multifaceted destination. Whether you're hiking through national parks, swimming near waterfalls, exploring ancient cities, or savouring traditional cuisine, the Zadar region promises an unforgettable experience for all. To visit Zadar is to step into the heart of Croatia and experience its multifaceted charm.

Kids

The kids will find lots to love around Dalmatia – this beautiful part of Croatia packs in plenty of surprises.

The Aquapark Dalmatia water-park is one of the region's best family attractions, around 10 minutes drive from Šibenik city centre. Located at the Solaris beach resort, the park has a great range of slides, pools and games, as well as a special zone for the youngest children.

They will also love the city's Aquarium Terrarium. Just a couple of minutes from St James' Cathedral, this popular aquarium houses many sea creatures native to the Adriatic. If they are more into birds, there's the chance to learn falconry at the Sokolarski Centre in Dubrava. This woodland rescue centre cares for hundreds of injured birds before returning them to the wild – it's a real education and only 10 minutes from Šibenik.

It's also easy to discover the beautiful Krka National Park, a vast area of natural beauty which is not far from Šibenik. Guided tours can show you all the best parts, including spectacular waterfalls, Lake Visovac and the River Krka itself.
For beach life, head out to Plaza Banj – there's a huge array of facilities, with everything from beach volleyball and basketball to a children's playground, cafés and an open-air cinema. Barone Fort is another excellent place for kids, with its ship-shaped playground and amazing views out to sea.

The amazing Paklenica National Park is unmissable, especially when you're close to it in Vinjerac. It's a huge, mountainous area of caves, cliffs and canyons, and there's plenty of wildlife to spot along the way. Whether you venture out on foot or by bike – following the designated cycle trails – you're sure not to forget this place.

Alternatively, head into the city of Zadar and say hello to the sea and the sun. Kids will love the quirky Sea Organ, which uses the power of the waves to play its tunes, while the Sun Salutation creates colourful light shows that are bound to impress. Zadar also offers family-friendly attractions like the Museum of Illusions, and there's lots more to see in the historic Old Town – home to landmark sights and lots of great places to eat.

Look out for the Museum of Ancient Glass, which offers a glassblowing workshop and has lots of items on display for something both educational and fun. And while it's not mainly aimed at kids, Zadar's Archaeological Museum may also interest some, along with the ruins of the city's Forum.

Many thanks for the hospitality, special thanks for the delicious cheesecake!
Although we did not believe, but we really spent most of our time in the gorgeous villa floating in the pool.
This location is one of our favourites, because we could enjoy the perfect view of the sea and the mountains at the same time.
