Overview
Fantastically positioned in the beating heart of Biarritz on southwestern France’s Basque coast, La Terrasse is an elegant apartment for lovers of true refinement.
The town has been a popular seaside resort since European royalty began visiting it in the 1800s, and it’s a major surfing destination, well frequented by surfers and water-sport enthusiasts for its long sandy beaches and excellent waves all year round.
Situated on the first floor, the apartment's main draws are the open plan living and dining area letting plenty of natural light in thanks to the large French windows opening to the terrace. The décor throughout the apartment presents neutral tones, with leather furniture and striking artwork. A well-equipped kitchen with a breakfast bar invites you to prepare home-cooked meals and energising breakfasts before heading out to explore.
The three bedrooms all benefit from comfortable double beds, each enjoying attractive en-suite bathrooms and comprising the same contemporary décor that extends throughout the rest of the house. Equipped with large double beds, they’ll make you excited for coming back after a long day spent exploring the fascinating town and its surrounding landscape. In addition, the large terrace area is a fantastic space in which to entertain or simply enjoy a quiet morning coffee admiring the stunning vista that this property offers.
When you are ready to leave your luxe abode, Biarritz’s beaches, shopping streets and restaurants are just a short stroll away. Visit the famous La Grande Plage beach and watch surfers riding the waves from the comfort of your towel or discover a lovely atmosphere around Port Vieux where there is the town’s main shopping street. Here you can also find a bustling food market, wonderful seafood places and many bars and cafés ideal for sun-soaked relaxation.
For a slight change of scenery, hire a car to explore the wonders of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, whether it’s the idyllic Basque villages near the majestic mountains, wilder beaches along the coast or pretty seaside villages.
Alternatively, you can also visit another country by simply crossing the border to Spain’s Donostia-San Sebastian, a resort town known for its beaches such as the Playa de la Concha framed by a picturesque bayfront promenade and world-renowned restaurants helmed by innovative chefs. In its cobblestoned old town Parte Vieja, upmarket shops neighbour vibrant pintxo bars pairing local wines with bite-size regional specialities.

Location
About the surrounding area of La TerrasseThe fantastic position in the beating heart of France’s surf capital, Biarritz, means there are plenty of activities and opportunities for every type of jet setter. The town has an air of faded glamour, and its charming blend of shabby chic makes it loved by both, hippie surfers and elegant holidaymakers flocking to the seaside to simply soak up the sunshine.
A symbol of the town and the most visited historical monument, the Rocher de la Vierge is a Landmark rock formation topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary that can only be reached by a footbridge and offers sweeping views of the ocean and the Bay of Biscay. Its shore remains truly beautiful, with white breakers crashing on sandy strands. Walk along the promenade to reach the Biarritz Grande Plage, the main beach in town where you can sunbathe, swim, and watch surfers ride waves. Another great place worth visiting is the Plage du Port Vieux – a small, sheltered beach, loved by locals and perfect for those seeking more privacy.
Thanks to the array of ambient cafés as well as top-notch restaurants, you’ll never have to go hungry for too long. The main strip is lined with bistros and classic European places, while the most prominent seafood bistros are located near the Port de Pecheurs.
The closest supermarket is located only a 5-minute walk away, helping you to tick off your grocery list and stock up on essentials. Alternatively, you can follow in the locals’ footsteps and shop for fresh produce at the amazing market at Les Halles de Biarritz where you can buy fresh fish, bread, fruit, and vegetables as well as cheeses and other specialities from the region.
After you’ve discovered everything Biarritz has to offer, consider hiring a car and driving to one of the nearby villages and towns, all fascinating yet unique in their own way. Ainhoa and Sare effortlessly showcase Bacque’s pretty interiors, and both can be easily reached in under 40 minutes by car. Bidart is also only a 10-minute drive away, and this delightful place is filled with traditional houses, café terraces and small boutiques showcasing local designers. Wander across to Chapelle Sainte-Madeleine for wonderful ocean views or venture down to one of the beaches below (some accessed via rocky paths and steps).
If you want to take in more panoramic views and visit tranquil spots, then the coastal trail heading all the way down to Hendaye and the Spanish border starting in the village of Bidart might be the best choice. This region is also popular with cyclists with routes near the coastline as well as through the Basque interiors. Other liked activities across this area include horse-riding, fishing, tree-top adventure courses and golf in one of the many courses near Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesBiarritz is a mecca for surfers and is the go-to place to introduce youngsters to this fascinating water sport or advance their skills by taking more lessons – all provided by skilled surfers and enthusiastic teachers alike. Children will love splashing in the water learning to catch waves, with many surf schools located in the city and along the promenade. For some inspiration and to learn the best technique, pack a light lunch, sunscreen and head protection and walk to La Plage de la Cote des Basques where you can sit and watch surfers from the comfort of your picnic blanket.
There are also other smaller beaches which are more family-friendly and not full of waves-riding athletes, such as Plage Milady with a kids’ playground and Côte des Basques. Around 30 minutes by car, you can find St-Jean-De-Luz, protected by sea walls and providing safe bathing for the whole family – with trampoline parks, mini golf and another train taking you to more sandy beaches with playgrounds and games.
For a different Biarritz experience, consider taking the road train along the coast for breathtaking views of the twinkling sea and with many interesting stops along the way. The 30-minute trip allows you to stop off at the Aquarium of Biarritz which houses an array of fish and marine creatures and is ideal for children of all ages.
