Location
About the surrounding area of Chateau Des DragonsChâteau Des Dragons is situated in the north of the Vienne, between Poitiers and the Loire Valley, 3 hours from Paris and 2 hours from the Atlantic Coast.
Places to see & châteaux to visit
An hour’s drive from Château Des Dragons takes you right to the centre of the Loire Valley, with its many historical sites of interest and, of course, its world-renowned chateaux. Just as beautiful, the towns and villages of the Vienne boast many fascinating medieval buildings and monuments, as well as local food markets. There’s plenty to keep adults and children amused!
The Loire Valley
Château de Villandry – an hour and 20 minutes by car
Villandry, right in the middle of the Loire Valley, is a Renaissance chateau sitting at the centre of three levels of terraced gardens. It was the last of the great Renaissance chateaux to be built on the river Loire. It is distinguished for the harmony of its architecture and, in particular, its wonderful all-seasons gardens.
Château d’Azay le Rideau – an hour and 10 minutes by car
Azay-le-Rideau has to be one of the prettiest of the Loire chateaux! Built on an island in the middle of the Indre river by a rich banker during the reign of François the first, it reflects the latest building techniques and innovation of the time. With its feet in the waters of the Indre, its reflected facades gives it an other-worldly quality that makes it unique amongst the Loire chateau.
Château de Chenonceau – an hour and 20 minutes by car
A property of the Crown, then a royal residence, Château de Chenonceau is renowned not just for its architectural originality but for its inhabitants, namely, Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis. Today, the chateau is, after Versailles, the most visited in France.
Château Royal d’Amboise – an hour and 25 minutes by car
King Charles VIII and François 1st (between the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th centuries) transformed the medieval fortress of Amboise into a magnificent royal residence. It became a kind of cultural mecca, with many of the most noted European writers and artists of the day being invited to the Court of Amboise. One of them, Leonardo de Vinci, spent the last part of his life here in exile from Italy and is buried in the Chateau’s chapel.
Chinon – an hour by car
Chinon is a picturesque town with a medieval heart. You can spend time walking round and admiring the old town and its quaint streets, its squares, gardens and quayside, which straddle the length of the Vienne river. Its medieval quarter and the fortress that dominates the hill above the town are not to be missed.
Saumur – an hour and 15 minutes by car
Saumur is France’s equestrian capital and the Cadre Noir, France’s national horse-riding school. It is one of the many places that you might want to visit here. The town’s first buildings were constructed during the 11th century and it is home to two chateaux: Château de Saumur, a fortressed castle that was built during the 14th century for the Dukes of Anjou and has played the role of manor house, Governor’s residence, prison and arms depot and the elegant Château de Beaulieu, built in the 18th Century and designed by architect Jean Drapeau. The town lies at a natural crossing point between the rivers Loire and Thouet and is surrounded by vineyards.
Tours – an hour and 10 minutes by car
The capital of the Indre and Loire departments, Tours has a reputation for being discreet and is therefore a town where people live, as opposed to being a top tourist destination. That being said, Tours has some very well-preserved historic quarters, a fine arts museum, a magnificent cathedral and basilica, idyllic parks and some great places to shop, including several lively food markets, including the central marketplace (les halles).
Richelieu – 35 minutes by car
Designed by architect Jacques Lemercier, the chateau and the town of Richelieu were the vision of just one man, Cardinal Richelieu. Almost 2000 workers worked on its construction, which was started in 1631 and almost finished by 1642. However, come the revolution, Richelieu’s chateau was bound to be on the target list and its stone was ‘borrowed’ to build many of the buildings surrounding Richelieu’s historic centre. Happily, its vast park, the dome, its cellars, the orangery and monumental gate survived and make a delightful spot for a walk or picnic.
Medieval towns in the Vienne
Poitiers – 40 minutes by car
A city packed with history and culture and capital of the historic region of Poitou, Poitiers’ town centre boasts some remarkable medieval buildings, pretty squares and parks – including the glorious Parc de Blossac - as well as some magnificent churches and cathedrals. Notable among them is Notre-Dame-la-Grande, a Roman Catholic edifice that was built between the 11th and 12th centuries. Its famous ornamental facade in which the main episodes from the Bible are carved is a must-see. Poitiers is also a University town and its 20,000 plus students give it a lively, youthful energy.
Chatellerault – 30 minutes by car
Built on the banks of the Vienne river, Châtellerault’s origins date from the Middle-Ages. From that period until the Renaissance, its industry consisted predominantly of cutlery, sword making, tanning and watchmaking. In 1816, the commune became a centre for arms manufacture for the French government, a link which is preserved today in the form of the French military’s archives on armament matters, which are all located in the old weapon manufacturing facility. But Châtellerault charms are not all about arms! As you would expect from a town with a rich industrial past, the town has its fair share of architectural splendours and museums – including the Museum of Cars, Motorbikes and Bicycles (le Musée Auto Moto Vélo) and one dedicated to French philosopher René Descartes, who spent his childhood here; gardens, a lake and forest.
Angles sur l’Anglin – an hour by car
Aptly designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Angles-sur-l’Anglin sits high on a hill overlooking the river Anglin, which was used to transport salt for storage in the town’s caves. The ruins of the fortress that was built between the 11th and 15th century by the Counts of Lusignan dominate the High Town, where Saint-Martin’s church, the chapel of Saint-Pierre and its panoramic view can be found.
In the Low Town, the Sainte-Croix Quarter has pretty houses with characteristic plain tile roofs and a Romanesque church, among the many sights of interest. Don’t miss the Jours d’Angles Festival when there are embroidery workshops that demonstrate the traditional fine pulled-thread embroidery that is unique to this area, or the ‘interpretation centre’, where computer and laser copy technology take visitors back to the end of the ice age and into the caves and rock shelters of their ancestors.
Chauvigny – 50 minutes by car
From its promontory overlooking the Vienne, Chauvigny’s medieval quarter is unique in Europe, as vestiges of five chateau/forts can be found here. The ruins of the Bishop’s Castle now host the wonderful ‘Giants of the Sky’ (Les Géants du Ciel) Falconry display. Meanwhile, Chauvigny’s VeloRail (4-wheeled frames with small rail wheels that can be pedaled by up to 5 people) follows the ancient train track, and is fun for adults and children alike!

Traditional, regional cuisine or gourmet … you’ll find restaurants nearby that cater to all tastes. Here’s a small selection of favourites:

Golf – 30 minutes by car
Between Poitiers and Châtellerault is the Golf du Haut-Poitou, a course that plays host to the International Open series. The 18 holes here are deemed very technical and the course ranks as one of the best in France. There are magnificent views of Saint Cyr Lake too.
Golf du Haut-Poitou also offers a nine-hole course and a pitch and putt.
Walking
Don’t forget to bring your walking boots! There’s a footpath (called ‘Le sentier des Bois du Dognon’) that borders the Chateau and takes you on an 11 km (2.5 hour) trail that passes the local vilage, a Romanesque church and the town hall. Maps are available at the Chateau.
The “Ligne Verte” (Green Line) is an old railway track between Chatellerault and Loudun that has been converted into a walking and cycling route. You can access it at Lencloître.
More information and footpath maps can be found at Lencloître’s Tourist Office.
Swimming – 30 minutes by car

Stunning Holiday Destination
Chateau is a stunning and elegant holiday destination, set in exceptionally beautiful grounds, all of which are caringly presented by Alla and Christian.
The accommodation is luxurious and spacious, perfect for our party of ten adults and six children.
The pool was beautifully warm and cleaned everyday. Our six children had a wonderful time.
The external seating areas offered a charming terrace overlooking the grounds and a shaded dining area for the entire party.
We would highly recommend this property. -
Wonderful
We had a wonderful two weeks at the chateau. One week as a family of ten with two small children and the second week as four adults. The chateau worked perfectly for both. Plenty of privacy for all with a separate toilet and bathroom for each double room. The kitchen was well equipped for all our needs and we were able to produce some delicious meals. The location of the chateau is ideal as it is very peaceful with beautiful well kept grounds. The owners responded to all our requests quickly and were really helpful. They were both discreet and readily available. We saw the owner most mornings as he prepared the pool and he was always extremely friendly and helpful. Their recommendations for activities and restaurants were a great help and led to some great experiences for us, including a balloon ride and local wine tasting. We had a car with us, which was useful to get around, but we also used the local Taxi service, including the 9 seater - the taxi company was friendly and arrived on time. The pool, chateau and the grounds were immaculate and the outside areas were great for mealtimes. As we had a few days of rain we also ate some meals and spent time indoors and the chateau worked well for our group of ten. The antiques and artwork meant there was always something new to discover. All in all, would highly recommend and may well return.

Beautiful
Beautiful chateau. Comfortable, well-equipped, fantastic grounds and swimming pool. Really lovely area, with a Saturday market showcasing local produce. Generous, helpful and welcoming hosts. We stayed for 2 weeks and found the chateau perfect for entertaining family and friends, as well as for relaxing in the sunshine. Could not recommend more highly.

Incredible
What a truly incredible place to stay. The owners were so welcoming and could not do enough for us during our stay when needed. The chateau and grounds relax you immediately when you arrive. There is so much space and every facility you need. This venue is a must for your holiday.

Unforgettable stay
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing an unforgettable stay at the enchanting Château Paquerette with my wife and eight of our closest friends. We were all impressed by the incredible beauty and exquisite charm of the castle. The moment we arrived we were greeted by the warmest of welcomes from the proud owners of the château. Their attention to detail and genuine hospitality made us feel most welcome throughout our stay. The kind couple provided us with some excellent recommendations of local day trips and activities that we were able to partake in. The château itself is a true masterpiece, beautifully preserved with meticulous care and attention to detail. Its elegant façade, adorned with intricate architectural details, harks back to a bygone era. One of the many delights of staying at Château Paquerette is the opportunity to experience the remarkable uniqueness of each bedroom, as they each possess their own distinct character and charm. From the moment you step foot into your chosen sanctuary, you will be greeted by an ambiance that is both captivating and personalised. Château Paquerette not only boasts stunning grounds but also offers delightful amenities for its guests to enjoy, including a barbecue area and a refreshing swimming pool (my personal favourites). These features added an extra layer of enjoyment and relaxation to our stay. The barbecue area at Château Paquerette provides a wonderful opportunity to indulge in outdoor culinary experiences with everything you need on the terrace. Surrounded by lush greenery and meticulously manicured gardens, the pool area provides a serene and tranquil atmosphere, and due to its positioning with the château on one side and tall trees all around, it feels especially private. Château Paquerette is a true gem that embraces its rich heritage while providing guests with an unparalleled experience of luxury and serenity. Whether you seek a romantic getaway or a peaceful retreat, Château Paquerette will leave you enchanted, longing to return. I recommend the Château unreservedly, my only regret being that I didn’t stay for longer!

Wonderful
We have just returned from Château Paquerette after a wonderful family holiday with seven adults and five children. On arrival at this historical Château we were greeted by the owners who showed us around their magnificent Château with its beautiful antique furniture. They had provided a Welcome Pack of local food delicacies and essentials. The rooms were generous in size and decorated in keeping with the period. The kitchen was fitted with modern appliances and provided everything you may need. The rear terrace sited a larger table where we could all dine together and also barbecue. The heated pool was a great success especially with the children. The extensive wooded grounds were perfect for exploring and playing games. The hosts were wonderful, discreet but there if assistance required, as proved when one of our party needed to visit a Doctor. A tranquil place to unwind.

Magnificent
It's a 200 Year Old Chateau in a remote location steeped in history and with a beauty and magnificence that simply cannot be easily put into words. The Chateau was recently purchased by the owners as a going concern holiday rental business, they are the perfect guardians for such a historic property and they were extremely attentive whilst we stayed in the property, they kept a discrete distance but were always on hand for any assistance needed. As hosts you would not find any better, they are friendly, professional and welcoming. The property itself is set in mature grounds that are extremely well kept, trees (some are 200 years old) surround the grounds on all sides making it private and secluded. The local village of Lencloitre is just a few moments drive away with a small supermarket, bar, pharmacist, restaurant and the all important boulangerie. The interior of the property is equally as magnificent as the exterior, good size rooms decorated in an appropriate fashion to the age and feel of the property. The kitchen is a good size and everything you need is already there ready to be used if needed. We spent the mornings and evenings sitting on the terrace overlooking the pool, the days we spent around or in the pool. We did explore the grounds and played hide and seek with the grandchildren as well as a few activities like football, frisbee whilst the wildlife buzzed around the grounds, simply incredible. I couldn't recommend the property highly enough, I simply don't have the eloquence of vocabulary required to do it justice nor can I express just how friendly, professional and welcoming the hosts are, if you get the opportunity then it will be time well spent.

Wonderful reception and vacation in this beautiful chateau
With our family and friends we had a wonderful short holiday in this magnificent chateau. Great location, totally private, gorgeous large rooms with all modern facilities. It had everything that we needed and thank you for the provisions left for our arrival. The weather was good for us to use the pool and walk the little pathways and visit the duck pond. Could not fault this chateau for a great holiday and the hosts who were on hand for any requests and really made this a special occasion for us all. The use of the minibus was great for going out in the evenings to nearby Poitiers and the chateaux were closeby. A great stay for anyone wanting peace and quiet in a beautiful and handy location to the Loire. Would definitely recommend and stay again. Thank you.

A Little Paradise
We have visited Chateau Paquerette twice, and we all loved it!
We are a big family of three generations, located in 3 different countries, so the chateau was a perfect place to meet up for our summer holiday. When you see the chateau for the first time, it takes your breath away. The well kept old building and the huge garden surrounding it was amazing. The pool is big, private and well kept. All the kids and adults loved it! The chateau has been updated inside. Some rooms are modernised, other rooms have been kept as they are with the original charm.
The landscape around the chateau is beautiful, and we enjoyed it every morning when some of us were out running or just drinking the first coffee of the day on the terrasse. The ground to this estate is huge, so it was possible for the kids to play football, hide and seek, badminton and even a treasure hunt was created. We all had a lot of fun and the iPads and iPhones were forgotten for a while!
Every morning our host couple served us breakfast, what a treat! We had booked the local chef and beautician to make this holiday as relaxing as possible, and we were not disappointed! The owners of the chateau were wonderful, and they have created a little paradise! We were so lucky to have a taste of it! -
Delightful chateau!
We stayed at Chateau Paquerette and could not have been more delighted. From the fantastic welcome we received from Laurence and Marian to the wonderful Chateau itself it really was a delightful experience. There really is something for everyone here and the Chateau and its grounds are fantastic. We are really looking forward to returning as soon as we can!

Chateau Paquerette- Breathtaking, a holiday to remember
Eleven of us had the most wonderful week in Chateau Paquerette, we didn't want to leave this most lovliest of places. Marion and Laurence were great hosts, and if you needed anything at all, nothing was too much trouble. Laurence was available to assist with travel, he collected us from the airport/train station, took and picked us up from Futureoscope, suggested a vinyard and took us there for a tasting and tour. We went on some lovely walks, mainly into the local village to collect the daily "pain" and the rest of the groceries, usually stopping off at the "Cheval Blanc" for a Kir Royal. The pool got lots of use, having 4 children, and is cleaned every morning around 7am, we bbqed most evenings as we wanted to take advantage of the surroundings we were in.
There is everything you need at the Chateau, Marion had a lovely welcome basket prepared for our arrival and if in doubt as to what is provided at the Chateau, contact Marion - we packed 11 poolside towels, tea towels and dishcloths, these items were in abundance along with many extras.
If it's your desire to stay in a chateau, then choose Chateau Paquerette. -
We didn't want to leave
We stayed at the Chateau Paquerette from the 17th to the 31st August and wished we had booked it for a lot longer. Chateau and gardens are beautiful - photos cannot do it justice. There is also a large dining room which is not shown in the photos but which is lovely and ideal for the odd very late meal when it is just a bit too cold perhaps to eat outside. Very comfortable, warm and welcoming house. Exceptionally well equipped and furnished. All the beds are very comfortable. Extremely good supply of towels - both bath and pool. Pool is heated and is in a very pretty setting - looks lovely lit up at night. Well supplied with outdoor tables, chairs, loungers etc. Laurence and Marian (the owners) are very kind and helpful and have done a wonderful job in making the Chateau such a lovely place to stay. They have really put their hearts into this and we hope all future guests appreciate it as much as we all did. We would certainly recommend it and will definitely be returning.
