Set in a unique estate in Charente Maritime, with a backdrop of ancient stone walls, this 17th century chateau with private pool is set in twelve acres of beautiful parkland.

Originally built in the early 1600s, Chateau Serbise has been lovingly converted into an impressive holiday home.  The estate, including vast areas of stunning parkland, also includes two more simple houses; Etables Serbise and Domaine Serbise, all three historical homes can be rented together for large groups and weddings or booked separately for an ideal family holiday or celebration.

Chateau Serbise is the largest home on the estate, sleeping sixteen guests with eight bedrooms. The characterful grand salon features a rare decorative fireplace and the snooker room will delight all generations. An unpretentious dining room allows families and friends to gather for fine feasts and doors lead to the south facing patio, great for sun worshippers.

Whilst the charming home is full of history, you will find all the modern conveniences you would expect such as a well-equipped kitchen suitable for caterers, Wi-Fi and satellite TV. The chateau features a wonderful terrace, barbecue and al-fresco eating area which all leads to the inviting swimming pool overlooking the vast gardens and parkland.

Within 6km can find yourself in medieval Pons with restaurants, small shops and historical sights. Activities in the area include golf, horse-riding and canoeing. Beach-lovers only have to travel just over half an hour to the coast – there are long stretches of sandy beaches from St Georges de Didonne to St Palais sur Mer. Wine aficionados needn’t travel far either with dozens of wineries and Cognac nearby. This region has a particularly mild climate all year round and it can be one of the sunniest parts of France during from late Spring to Autumn.

Whether a picturesque wedding in beautiful surroundings or a relaxing family holiday, Chateau Serbise offers you character and comfort in a glorious historical setting.

What you should know…

  • Please note that there is no heating in the chateau.
  • Please note that only the chef from the property can be used for private chef services.
  • Due to the age of the building, the owners may require access to the property in case of any issues e.g. water and electricity. They will always request permission beforehand.
  • The closest bars and restaurants are 5 km away, so we recommend a car rental. If you go without, pre-booking taxis is a must!

This home is a part of our Great Value and Heritage Collection!

This is a historic home, and as such:

  • It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

The region of Charente Maritime is one of the sunniest parts of France and benefits from a mostly sunny and warm climate from April through October. The influence of the Gulf Stream means that winters can be as mild as the Mediterranean. Cognac & Saintes are 15km away and Royan is 25km from the estate. The airports of Bordeaux, Angouleme and La Rochelle are within 1 hours drive and are served by an increasing number of UK regional airports.

St. Genis & Pons are both 5-6km away where there are restaurants and small shops. The nearest beach is only 35 minutes drive. There are 3 golf courses: Saintes (typical UK type club), Cognac (good course, above average) and Royan (reminds one of the Berkshire courses - pine on sand - good course).

The area has many historical sites relating to its past including the periods of Roman occupation, Richard Coeur de Lion and Eleanor of Aquitane, the French Revolution and the Second World War. As the centre of Cognac production, the towns of Cognac and Jarnac are must visits with guided tours around the headquarters of Hennesey, Martell, Remy Martin, Otard, Hine etc.

The coast line from St Georges de Didonne north to St Palais sur Mer has miles of sandy beaches and good fish restaurants. The towns of Royan, La Rochelle and Rochefort are interesting places to visit and are all within one hour's drive.

The area abounds with many fine restaurants, some more expensive than others but all incredible value for money. Many local artisans welcome visits to view their business, including barrel making, wood carving and sculpture, pottery production, chocolate making and many more.

The wine production areas of Bordeaux are within easy reach with the Blaye region only half an hour away and St Emilion just over an hour by car. From the towns of Blaye or Royan it is possible to take a car ferry across to the Medoc.

The city of Bordeaux can be reached in an hour with its good shopping, art galleries, museums and historical buildings. The same can be said for Saintes. Within an hour there are three top golf courses at Saintes, Cognac and Royan with more around Bordeaux.

As well as the obvious sea fishing, river fishing in the Seugne is only 5 minutes away. The Charente only half an hour away. Only 5kms in either direction are good quality local tennis courts. There are several horse stables around providing riding for all levels through the local woodlands. A very local stable provides carriage rides around the lanes of the area. An international length (1.2km long) go-cart track is only 10 minutes from Clerbise. Canoes are available for hire on the local river Seugne.

A busy nightclub is just 5kms away and is open from Thursday to Sunday.

  • A big Thank You

    on 13/07/2017

Just wanted to say a big Thank You to you all for making our holiday run smoothly and to let you know Chateau Serbise was perfect. The owners were lovely and we all had a great time.

  • Relaxed & enjoyable week

    on 20/09/2012

Firstly I must apologise for taking so long to write to you. I can't believe how time has flown by since we arrived at your beautiful chateau. I just wanted to say on behalf of Keith, our family & friends what a truly fantastic week we had staying at your wonderful estate. The chateau & gites were perfect for our celebration for Keith's 40th. The accommodation, gardens, pools & surroundings are all kept to such a high standard & we had such a relaxed & enjoyable week. Thanks again for your wonderful hospitality. I hope you are both well & of course busy with bookings. We will definitely be back within the next few years, the kids still talk so fondly about "the chateau".

  • Lovely time with great people

    on 20/09/2012

Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday at the Chateau. We all had a lovely time with great people, enjoyed the local food, relaxed and had fun in a beautiful setting. We could not have asked for more.

  • We had the most wonderful holiday..

    on 20/09/2012

Just a short message to confirm that we would like to stay at the Chateau from 26th July to 9th August 2014 if possible. We had the most wonderful holiday this year and the weather was marvellous. Thank you so much.

Hope you enjoyed having your daughters and grandchildren to stay.

  • It is already a lovely place, and I'm sure will only get better!

    on 20/09/2012

Hi Andrew, just wanted to send you a brief note to thank you and Marje (on behalf of the whole group) for a super location for our group holiday. We are all now home, safe and sound - albeit a little tired from two weeks of late nights, sun, and the odd drink!
We loved the Chateau - and all of us got great use of the pool in such lovely weather. I told you after the first week that my concern before booking was that a group of 9 adults and 3 children might be just a little bit noisy for the other guests in "Le Domain...". However, the layout of the estate was such that the place did seem very tranquil noise did not appear to travel...much to my relief.
I wish you and Marje the very best with your project at the Chateau. It is already a lovely place, and I'm sure will only get better.

  • Just right!

    on 20/09/2012

Thank you once again for hiring your lovely chateau to us. It's easy to buy a place and hire it, less easy to be present and helpful whilst maintaining a suitable level of intervention and having done a few of these trips I can genuinely say that you had it just right. Typing up the menu was a step you didn't need to do but was so helpful.

I'll book again. I do these as a volunteer for a 50,000 member organisation and could have filled your place 3 times from the enquiries I had, so will look to repeat this trip soon and may bring this lot back in 3 years.
