Location
About the surrounding area of Maison Du BoisIdeally situated in a residential area of the seaside resort town, Maison du Bois is close to a bevy of conveniences, including supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, boutiques and at least six beaches. France’s long Atlantic coast boasts long beaches of fine sand that is ideal for sunbathing, surfing and beachcombing.
The beautiful lake known as Etang d’Aureilhan (15-minute drive) is almost as rich in history as it is in beauty. It is no wonder the lake has long attracted the world’s rich and famous. The stunning Château Woolsack can be found on the lake’s banks. Built in 1911 for Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster, this lakeside manor was designed by architects Detmar Blow and Fernand Billery to look like the Tudor style home of Rudyard Kipling built by Cecil Rhodes in South Africa. The home has welcomed guests including Coco Chanel, Charlie Chaplin, Salvador Dali, and even Winston Churchill, who created approximately 20 paintings on the banks of Lake Aureilhan.
Don’t forget to take a stroll along the Promenade Fleurie, a lovely walk through flowers, shrubs and ornamental gardens along the edge of the lake.
The renown seaside resort of Arcachon (65-minute drive) is a great option for a day trip. In the neighbouring town of Le Teich you’ll find a popular ornithological reserve, a magical spot for birdwatchers to see a wide range of bird species in their natural environment. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars!
Running south from Arcachon you’ll find sandiest stretch of coastline in Europe, running 200km southwards to Biarritz. Don’t forget to check out the Dune de Pilat, Europe’s highest sand dune whose shifting summit provides panoramic views across to Cap Ferret.
