Located between the best vineyards in the Bordeaux region of Southwest France, is Madalyn House. Built-in the 18th century, Madalyn House was originally a winery and historically known as La Madeleine. The exterior of the building is pale bricks with tall windows and light grey shutters. You will feel worlds away from home as you step towards the house for the first time, surrounded by emerald vineyards and open countryside.
The house has been fully renovated and can host up to 10 guests between the main house and the little apartment. The renovation has maintained the features of a traditional home while incorporating modern luxuries, blending comfort and antiques. As you walk into the house, you enter a reception-style area with a sunlit breakfast room to one side. Tall windows let in the morning light as you enjoy a continental breakfast a few steps from your room. A luxury lounge is off the reception area, with plush deep blue velvet sofas, decorated with crystal lamps, ornate mirrors and antique decorations. This space is perfect for you all to come together to plan adventures of the day.
There are four bedrooms within the main house, and two bedrooms in the apartment. Each bed in the bedrooms is either a super king, king or twin bed so there’s options for everyone in the family. Each bedroom in the main house has an ensuite bathroom with walk-in showers and a separate bath. The bathrooms are filled with modern features and home comfort to make your stay feel effortless, including towel rails, candles, toiletries, bathrobe and slippers. The sinks are unique to each ensuite, ranging from tall, stone sinks to round, bucket-shaped sinks. Some bedrooms have additional seating looking out the windows, proving more space to relax and spread out.
Surrounding the house outside is a private garden with a long pool offering a cooling break from the hot sun. The garden is a sun trap, which you can make the most of on sun loungers with parasols ready to relieve you from the hot sun. A shaded outdoor seating area with soft cushions is there to relax into, enjoying peaceful moments together.
The local area is filled with unique locations, including St. Emilion, a local medieval village with two thousand years of history found in beautiful medieval architecture and monuments. The owners of the house will ensure you see the best of France. They are happy to organise day trips and suggest where to go to help you plan a fantastic holiday.

Location
About the surrounding area of Madalyn HouseIn Southwest France, Madalyn House is in the Bordeaux region, surrounded by historic villages, monuments, and famous vineyards. Your hosts are ready to make your stay enjoyable and to ensure you see the best of the area. They are happy to book vineyard tours, book a table at local restaurants, arrange picnics at local vineyards, and tasting local produce and wines.
A ten-minute walk from the house is St. Emilion, a medieval village, located in the famous Bordeaux wine region. Surrounded by vineyards, St. Emilion has two thousand years of history found in beautiful medieval architecture and monuments. Golden bricks shine in the sunlight as you wind through the village, exploring historic vineyards, cafes, and shops.
The Dordogne River meanders through the region and is a great way to see the French landscape from another perspective. The Dordogne River was recognized by UNESCO in 2012, and added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves listing. The river is 483km long and passes through unspoiled countryside and beautifully preserved towns and villages. Take a kayaking tour down the river, and see the deep gorges, medieval villages, and wildlife at your leisurely pace. Go swimming from the riverbank, enjoying the waters of the cleanest river in Europe.
Spend a day exploring Libourne, a harbour town that sits on the joining of the Dordogne and Isle rivers. Originally the harbour was a trading port, transporting wine, wool, wood, and salt. Today, you will love exploring the town, marvelling at its architecture and cobbled streets. A farmers market fills Place Abel Surchamp in the town centre every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday. This market was hosted in Libourne for 600 years. There you will find seasonal produce, French nougat, and samples of regional French cheeses such as Brebis. You can even purchase a straw market bag as a souvenir to bring home.
Spend an afternoon feeling refreshed and travel to the magnificent French coast. The southwest of France is home to the Aquitaine coastline, the longest sandy coastline in Europe, stretching 230 kilometres. Take a cooling dip in the Bay of Biscay, relaxing under the sun’s rays.

Region
One of France’s most iconic hilltop towns, Saint-Émilion is waiting to enchant wine enthusiasts, gastronomes, keen historians and Francophiles in so many different ways. With its UNESCO World Heritage vineyards, visitors will have the opportunity to sample AOC wines from one of the most famous and historic wine-growing regions in the world.
Start off by exploring the cobbled lanes of Saint-Émilion as you admire its beautiful architecture and churches – its origins date back to the 8th century. One of the most impressive sites is the 12th century stone-carved Monolithic church, the largest of its kind in Europe, a truly astonishing masterpiece – a guided tour of the church and catacombs is a must.
As well as the town’s famous Merlot, try Crémant de Bordeaux at Les Cordeliers, once a monastery that was brought by a winemaker in the 19th century – enjoy a glass of sparkling wine overlooking the cloister garden. Food lovers note there are several excellent restaurants including Michelin star establishments (Logis de la Cadène and La Table de Pavie are two famous names). Look out for French macarons as well - Saint-Émilion claims to be the birthplace of this delicious sweet treat.
Of course, wine tours and tastings can be arranged across the Saint-Émilion wine-growing region. There are so many to choose from, from small family-run vineyards to prestigious wine châteaux, and it’s fantastic to be able to buy such excellent wines directly from local producers. Wine connoisseurs note that the neighbouring Pomerol wine appellation should also be included on your itinerary for longer stays.
Meanwhile, explore the idyllic landscapes by bike, a wonderful way to appreciate the beauty of Saint-Émilion’s vineyards, or enjoy a hot-air balloon ride to capture the scenery below. A little further afield, canoe or kayak along the Dordogne near Castillon-la-Bataille, experience the vibrant markets of Libourne and travel to the great wine city of Bordeaux for another amazing day out in this captivating part of southwestern France.

Beautiful house
The house is beautiful, the rooms are spacious, characterful and yet modern. The location was perfect for us, a 10 min walk to the town but we could also park the car there.
