Region
One of France’s most iconic hilltop towns, Saint-Émilion is waiting to enchant wine enthusiasts, gastronomes, keen historians and Francophiles in so many different ways. With its UNESCO World Heritage vineyards, visitors will have the opportunity to sample AOC wines from one of the most famous and historic wine-growing regions in the world.
Start off by exploring the cobbled lanes of Saint-Émilion as you admire its beautiful architecture and churches – its origins date back to the 8th century. One of the most impressive sites is the 12th century stone-carved Monolithic church, the largest of its kind in Europe, a truly astonishing masterpiece – a guided tour of the church and catacombs is a must.
As well as the town’s famous Merlot, try Crémant de Bordeaux at Les Cordeliers, once a monastery that was brought by a winemaker in the 19th century – enjoy a glass of sparkling wine overlooking the cloister garden. Food lovers note there are several excellent restaurants including Michelin star establishments (Logis de la Cadène and La Table de Pavie are two famous names). Look out for French macarons as well - Saint-Émilion claims to be the birthplace of this delicious sweet treat.
Of course, wine tours and tastings can be arranged across the Saint-Émilion wine-growing region. There are so many to choose from, from small family-run vineyards to prestigious wine châteaux, and it’s fantastic to be able to buy such excellent wines directly from local producers. Wine connoisseurs note that the neighbouring Pomerol wine appellation should also be included on your itinerary for longer stays.
Meanwhile, explore the idyllic landscapes by bike, a wonderful way to appreciate the beauty of Saint-Émilion’s vineyards, or enjoy a hot-air balloon ride to capture the scenery below. A little further afield, canoe or kayak along the Dordogne near Castillon-la-Bataille, experience the vibrant markets of Libourne and travel to the great wine city of Bordeaux for another amazing day out in this captivating part of southwestern France.

The owners also provide tennis racquets and balls so you can stroll to the two public tennis courts next to the estate, a short walk away.
Heading south, the Dordogne River is around a 10 to 20-minute drive away. There are canoeing and kayaking opportunities near Pessac-sur-Dordogne/Lamothe-Montravel whilst Castillon-la-Bataille is a great spot for a picnic by the banks of the river – there’s a lovely atmosphere in the summer months as locals play pétanque. In July and August buy tickets for a historic reenactments of the Battle of Castillon on Friday and Saturday evenings – it’s a fantastic show and takes place at nearby Château de Castegens (9.5km).
When visiting Saint-Émilion, consider family-friendly tours (including tuktuk tours), try a spot of geocaching across the historic town, explore the fascinating Monolithic Church and take a ride on the little tourist road train. It’s also possible to hire bikes as there are some beautiful trails by the vineyards.
Discover tree-top adventures a little further afield (Des-chênes-toi Aventure and Arbor et Sens are both around a 45 minutes away) or venture west towards the coast – within a 90minute drive you could be climbing Dune du Pilat, cycling through the forests of the Médoc peninsula, trying summer watersports at Étang de Lacanau or surfing the Atlantic waves.
Of course, the city of Bordeaux is another fine day out for all ages with its museums, galleries, parks and fountains of Place de la Bourse, or spend time in Bergerac and hop on a traditional gabarre vessel, another way to experience the beauty of the Dordogne River.

How long have you owned the property?
2014.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
I had been looking for a property in St Emilion area since 1998 with various search agents. Looking for something that is quintessential of the region. Surrounded by vines, room for a pool (which we built). Close to town but not in town. Big enough for families but not too big that you get lost. A proper family holiday house.
Our house had been locked up and uninhabited for several years when we bought it. Dust sheets over furniture, antiques on walls. And so we got to work fully renovating the property to bring it back to luxury 21st century. No stone unturned and everything redone.
My family have a history in the wine business in Australia and this was the property I wanted to find and give back to my family.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The property is one of only 2 properties that is heritage protected. Us and the property next door.
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they really...
Must do...
Local food markets and wineries
Must eat...
Too many options to list – they are all special
Must see...
St Emilion after 6pm when the tourists have left and the town is your own
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
You will write a list of all the things to do and by the end of the week I am sure you will only have done 20% of your list. Instead you will end up relaxing and enjoying the property and surrounds too much – this happens to us and all of our guests every time!

I would certainly return
Idyllic! A fantastic entertaining house for all seasons with a great ambience. The pool and view from the rear of the house is truly special (and very relaxing). Although you don't want to leave the house, the location is perfect for touring local attractions, good restaurants and wine tasting too. I would certainly return for another visit.

Third visit as brilliant as the first two!
Third visit as brilliant as the first two! The Harvest weather of late September was cooler than mid-summer, but still perfect for relaxing by the pool or wandering through the vineyards into Puisseguin village. This trip we were a party of six adults - plenty of room to spread out in the plush bedrooms, to curl up with a book in the grand salon or linger over a red beneath one of the arbors. The lavender scented gardens are beautifully designed and the accommodations are as impressive on the inside as the house is from the outside, rising above the terraced vineyards. Stay here. You won't be disappointed. And if you do tear yourself away from the property, there're the beaut towns of St Emilion and Montaigne to explore, with plenty of fine dining options (restaurant tip: Candale, Les Terrasses Rouge & Comptoir St Genes).

Beautifully and elegantly decorated
We stayed in this stunning villa for a long weekend in July 2017. We loved the landscaped gardens leading down to the inviting infinity pool, and soaking up the views of the countryside from bean bags on the terrace. The house has been beautifully and elegantly decorated and was perfectly set up for enjoyment by us and our children. The centre of St Emilion was only minutes away by car so the whole family could enjoy a tour of the town and lunch, rounded off with a swim and a sunset glass of wine back at the villa.
