Overview
Close to many glorious beaches of Brittany and a short drive from the charming town of Quimperlé, Château de Lothéa offers the opportunity to stay in a beautifully renovated wing of a Breton manoir surrounded by acres of ancient woodland.
It’s thought that the château dates as far back as the 15th century, possibly earlier, when its original creation was most likely for defensive reasons. The grounds’ pigeonnier and farmhouse were added around a century later – both have recently been rescued from disrepair. The estate has belonged to the current owners’ family for over three hundred years and, despite additions over the years, little has changed since the 19th century.
That is except the most recent renovation of the west-wing of the château which has been wonderfully restored to feature five pretty bedrooms, including an original medieval double, reached via the main spiral staircase, boasting a grand four-poster bed. Downstairs, the medieval entrance hall is stunning with original stone walls and flooring. Old meets new in the traditional kitchen-diner with its characterful table and chairs placed near the open fireplace alongside an elegantly fitted kitchen. The salon has beautiful views out to the garden whilst the cosy TV lounge adds yet more charm to this welcoming home.
Surrounding the château find large lawns, space to play croquet, century-old trees and a table for al-fresco dining with the most picturesque of outlooks over the flower-decked dovecote and mature gardens.
Just a 5-minute drive away is the historic Breton town of Quimperlé with medieval lanes, an atmospheric weekly market, plenty of shops and restaurants and a picture-perfect ancient bridge covered in summer flowers. There’s canoeing, kayaking and horse-riding very close by as well as magnificent hikes with the GR34 passing nearby.
Brittany’s beaches are also within easy reach – there’s family-friendly shores just over a 10-minute drive away as well as surfing and paddle-boarding or discover snorkelling and sailing a little further around Larmor Plage. Look out for the catch of the day in Doëlan, admire the ancient standing stones of Carnac, then stop off for lunch with chilled white wine and oysters looking over the mesmerising Gulf of Morbihan.
What you should know…
- Château de Lothéa welcomes babes in arms and children over the age of 6 only. Please note the château is an old home with some uneven floors and numerous small and large stairways. There is also an unfenced terrace in the garden. Therefore, the owners do not routinely accept children below the age of 6.
- The five bedrooms are set across the western wing of this beautiful home. The rest of the château is a work in progress and not accessible to guests (no work will be carried out during your stay).
- Just over the hedge, separate to the main house, lives the owner’s friendly cousin.
This home is a part of our Great Value and Heritage Collection!
This is a historic home, and as such:
- It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
- Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

Location
About the surrounding area of Chateau De LotheaChâteau de Lothéa is located on the south coast of Brittany, on the edge of the Finistère department and just over a 10-minute drive to the beaches of the Atlantic coast. If travelling by train, the TGV from Paris Monparnasse takes just over 3 hours to Gare de Quimperlé (3km) or 2 hours 50 mins to Gare de Lorient (23km).
Despite the peaceful countryside setting, surrounded by forty acres of private land, it is only a 2.5km drive to the town of Quimperlé where you will find all the amenities you should need from boulangeries and charcuteries to large supermarkets. On a Friday morning there’s a bustling market or pick up some delicious local produce at the handsome indoor market, Les Halles, open every morning.
Quimperlé is full of charm, on the banks of the Isole and Ellé rivers, with medieval lanes, half-timbered houses, beautiful churches and a number of excellent restaurants to choose from (booking ahead is essential for many places). The flower-covered bridge, Pont Fleuri, is such a picturesque sight in the summer months.
The beaches of the Atlantic coast are also within easy reach – nearby Plage de Bellangenet is a family-friendly spot whilst Plage du Kerou is popular with paddle boarding and surfing. Plage de Kerfany is especially idyllic whilst the most adventurous of guests can explore the creeks around Porsac’h. If you love scuba-diving, head to the diving centre at Larmor-Plage and discover some of the sites around the bay. Larmor-Plage is also a good base for sailing and wind-surfing as well as its long sandy bays.
If you prefer kayaking and canoeing then there are wonderful excursions down the Laita river or along the Isole and Ellé rivers in the local town. River and sea fishing trips can also be arranged or discover the beautiful forest landscapes on horseback with an equestrian centre just a 5-minute drive away. With the GR34 passing nearby and many excellent cycling trails, it’s also a fantastic area for those that love walking and cycling. Golf-lovers have a choice of two 18-hole courses within a 40-minute drive including Golf de Ploemeur Ocean with the most amazing views.
For gentler days out, there are so many pretty villages and towns to visit. Head to Doëlan in the afternoon to buy fresh fish from the boats in the harbour or spend time in the artistic village of Pont Aven with its impressive Musée des Beaux-Arts. Admire the ancient standing stones of Carnac followed by oysters for lunch or drive to the port in Quiberon to catch a ferry across to the picturesque Belle Île, home to a famous opera festival in late July and early August.

Region
Brittany is famed chiefly for its beaches, and with so much coastline to explore it’s certainly one of the best reasons to visit the region. But there’s more to Brittany than sun, sea and sand, and while a good chunk of our villas and chateaux in Brittany are found next to the coast the ones further inland are just as tempting. Want to get the inside scoop on Brittany before you book? You’ll find our full Brittany travel guide below, full of tips, inspiration and great things to do.
Kids
Best Suited For: TeensChâteau de Lothéa welcomes babes in arms and children over the age of 6 only.
Traditionally such a welcoming family holiday destination, there is plenty for older children across this part of Brittany.
Just a five-minute drive away there’s a canoe and kayak club with excursions along the nearby rivers. An equestrian centre is also a short journey by car, a wonderful way to discover the forested landscapes of the surrounding countryside whilst keen cyclists will appreciate the fairly flat cycling routes nearby.
The beaches are of course a huge draw to this area – the nearest are Plage de Bellangenet, great for families and supervised in the summer, and Plage du Kerou with its surfing school that also offers paddle-boarding. A little further by car, Larmor-Plage has long sandy bays and is also well known for windsurfing, sailing and scuba-diving sites in the Lorient bay.
Other attractions in the region include Adrénature Adventure Park with its tree-top adventures for a range of ages and the charming animal park, Chez Dame Nature, home to alpacas, wallabies and white deer.

• How long have you owned the property?
7 years
• What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
It has been in my family for over 300 years – there is a strong emotional connection
• Are there any interesting stories in its history?
I’m not sure this is interesting, but here is something that comes to mind: As a child, I was often told of secret passageways, and a tunnel underground leading away from the house. During the French revolution, these were used by priests and rebels to hide and escape from the revolutionary army. Maybe someday, we will find them again. . . . .
• For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…
- Must do? Kayak/Canoe along the Laïta river from Quimperlé to the sea. It takes about 4 hours, but you pass through the most beautiful forests along the way.
- Must eat? The Crêperie de Saint-Maurice is famous locally for making the very best Crêpes around.
- Must see? Enjoy an afternoon at the picturesque town of Pont-Aven - the artistic home of the 19th century painter Paul Gauguin.
• What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
For the best beaches, try going to the plage du Kérou or Rocher percé (both at or near le Pouldu).

Wonderful experience
We had a wonderful experience at château Lothea .
Perfect in every aspect, location, calm, very well equipped kitchen, impeccable cleanliness. Very rarely seen, the place is even better and grandiose than the pictures in the publicity! The contact at the company itself (Oliver’s Travels) was absolutely impeccable. -
Lovely stay at the Chateau
So interesting reading and thinking about the history and of future plans to continue renovating. Comfortable and gorgeous surroundings. Would highly recommend.
We loved sitting outside on the sunny, warmer days but it was also good to see it on the rainy, misty days.
Well done Elsa and James on your renovations. Ps - the bath was SO comfortable.

Wonderful time
We had a wonderful time at Chateau De Lothea. The hosts have renovated the house with a lot of love for detail. The house was very well equipped, we enjoyed cooking together in the kitchen very much. We thank Elsa and James for allowing us to spend such a relaxing time in their home!

Something special
We had a very nice Christmas week with our families in Chateau De Lothea. Everything went perfect and we particularly enjoyed cooking together in the spacious and well equipped kitchen which became the main room for us to come together. The salon and the petit salon were more used for reading or playing piano. As it was wintertime it was a bit chilly and wet outside, so we could not use the garden. Nevertheless we had an unforgettable week in the chateau and would definitely recommend Jame's and Elsa's family chateau for someone who is looking for something special.

An incredible experience
We had a magical stay: the charm of old stones, quality renovation, careful decoration, majestic rooms. Everything was there to be seduced by the beauty of the place. The owners had everything planned to make our stay a good one. We also took advantage of the garden and we were able to take long walks in the forest accessible directly on foot.
