Chateau Lignol is a 14th century hunting lodge - a miniature castle in the middle of the Brittany countryside.

A slice of French charm without overwhelming acreage, Chateau Lignol is tucked away behind Breton farmland. A long track opens up onto a vista of the famous tower which can be glimpsed through the trees. A stay at Chateau Lignol is the perfect opportunity to explore and immerse yourself in the peaceful and beautiful local area. Surrounded by farmland, this is truly rural France at its best.

Built in 1251, it was used as a hunting lodge for the Princes of Rohan from 1384 when they wanted a bolthole from the hustle of nearby Guémené sur Scorff. It is five minutes by road to a compact busy village that boasts three boulangeries, a cinema and a weekly market, as well as an active cultural life.

The chateau is a reflection of the owner's eclectic and antique style. The airy spaces of the salons and the kitchen show off the candles, fabrics and salvaged stage pieces that shine in the restored rooms.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
Since September 2002

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The tower that was straight out of a fairy tale, an absolute Rapunzel haunt,
it was exactly what we were looking for in a home: a beautiful, large house that we could fall in love with: then the impressive gates and the woodlands.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?

Many; it was recorded as being here since the 1250's, the Prince of Rohan stayed here – Jean 1st who passed it to his son, Charles, although we do not have a record if either of them was Charming, it is a touch of royalty to the house; Bothwere related to Duchesse Anne de Bretagne, they used it as a hunting lodge. The ancient motte to the side is called The Fairy Mound by the locals and has been romanced as a fairy portal for decades.
During the Second World War it was used as a refuge for the children from Lorient, who had been made homeless by the attack on the submarine base.
Many years later, an old man turned up at our door and was reminiscing about his marvellous adventures in the countryside, escaping from the terrors of Lorient to the safety of Cravial.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

During July and August Guemene is especially busy with the fete d'Adouille – a local sausage – and a huge open air brocante – second hand fair – and every second year three is a street carnaval with massive floats.

Really eat?
Crepes and galettes – there is a distinct difference and you need to taste both!

Really see?
The restored Castle and Royal Baths in Guemene sur Scorff, the original home of the Princes of Rohan, now opened to explore and climb the battlements and see the thermal baths used by the Queen of Rohan. Also, in Pontivy, the main chateau for the canton.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or area?
Pack your walking boots: the countryside around here is riddled with well-marked, winding paths through valleys, beside rivers and into woodlands.
In the evening, the crows coming in to roost are best watched with a glass of wine as it marks the end of the day in Cravial.

Reviews

  • Warm welcome

    on 18/01/2023

The Chateau is atmospheric, eccentric, and even larger than we expected from the photos. We had no trouble finding it, and the host gave us a warm welcome. I loved the multitude of vintage chandeliers, the many big bathtubs and the sense of slightly ramshackle elegance. Our party of 6 really enjoyed our Christmas stay. There was lots of rain and some howling wind, but we were cosy by the fire with games, puzzles and books – and we dipped into the house’s huge collection of DVDs. We also enjoyed the large and well-equipped kitchen, with some delicious meals provided by Kes from EntreCopains Lignol. The spacious venue was perfect for our gloriously slothful family time together. We also took a few walks and explored the nearby village during some brief patches of sunshine – all very low-key and relaxing. (The rooms away from the fire were a wee bit chilly in the wet weather, so a few extra space heaters would not go amiss.)

  • Amazing Week!

    on 15/08/2017

We spent an amazing week at Chateau Lignol. We chose the Chateau as it looks beautiful but I will be honest the pictures do not do it justice as once you are there it looks even more amazing. The garden was great to entertain children of all ages, with the fenced swimming pool and the trampoline which were used and abused on a daily basis by our children. I loved relaxing in the bath and chilling by the the pool with a nice glass of wine. It was also so quiet with only the landlord (ever so discreet and still always there to assist should you need anything) and a farmer as neighbors that you can truly enjoy the serene surrounding. Yet it is only one hour from Concarneau and its lovely beaches to which we went on two occasions. We also used the service proposed for a cook, Sharon, whom we highly recommend (especially her beef stroganoff which is out of this world!) who preempted all our needs and who prepared all our breakfasts, beautifully laid out, few meals and a party buffet which we had with some friends at the Chateau. Everything looked amazing and tasted great as well! It will remain a beautiful memory of a true holiday where everyone truly relaxed and enjoy themselves! Thanks for this amazing location and property!

  • We will be back

    on 26/06/2017

We love it and would like to book again for next year!

  • Magical Chateau

    on 28/09/2016

There is something quite magical about Chateau Lignol, it envelops you and each day you relax a little more as you open the shutters onto green space and fields. You really are in your own little private heaven. Its a 14th Century hunting lodge with all the quirkiness of an older building that you just don't get with new properties.
We were a party of 8 with 4 young children and enjoyed being able to unwind in the old chateau and the grounds. The children loved the lawned area for playing games and taking off their next superhero adventure.
We were sorry to leave the property and look back on it with fond memories.

  • Beautiful and Charming place to Stay

Wonderful service from the owner Linda who does everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. This beautiful rural chateau is steeped in history and has a very eclectic decor in a shabby-chic style which would suit a group of friends or family that love something a bit different.
