Château Meuse is accessed along a 3 km private road in the renowned Champagne region of France. Beautifully secluded in the 2000 hectare Ardennes Forest, on the banks of the river Meuse, the château dates back to the 1600s, and is peacefully located in a vast valley. Château Meuse was built by Oranje-Nassau, using rocks from the mountain next to the château.

The estate comprises of a main château and five gites, offering accommodation for up to 60 people. Facilities available on the estate include a tennis court, badminton court, table tennis, fishing and petanque. Please note that you should bring your own equipment.

The area around the château is a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers, and mountain bikes are available for hire. Guests are welcome to bring their own horse, as the estate and forest are excellent for riding.

In addition to the château’s own beautiful dining room, which includes an open fireplace, the estate benefits from a large reception barn that is furnished as a restaurant and available for hire. Guests have exclusive use of Château Meuse and its grounds, and the gites and chateau will not be rented separately, so you can be assured that you will be the only group on site for the duration of your stay.

Château Meuse was renovated and rebuilt in the 18th century by the King of Belgium, Leopold II, who acquired the property for his mistress. The King planted exotic trees from the Belgian colony of the Congo in the château gardens, including palm trees, which can still be seen on the estate. The oldest tree is now more than 300 years old. Today, the château estate benefits from a superb collection of rare plants and trees. The oldest building on the estate is the tannery, also built from stone from the mountain next to the château.

What you should know…

  • The 20-person rate is for the main château only whilst the 60-person price also includes the cottages - please see the 'Features' tab for details on the layout.
  • The gardens are wonderful for children to play in - kids will need to be supervised due to the nearby river and streams.
  • There is complimentary Wi-Fi but it can only connect up to three devices at a time - this is a common problem in the area.
  • Bring your own equipment for all the brilliant outdoor games.
  • Please note that mid-week stays of 4 nights maximum are available for the price of 2 nights.
  • Please note that the use of any external caterers and/or contractors is not permitted.

This home is a part of our Great Value and Heritage Collection!

This is a historic home, and as such:

  • It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

The Ardennes region is beautifully diverse, and a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers and riders, with woodlands, vast lakes, winding rivers and a variety of terrains.  The river valleys consist of canyons reaching up to impressive green mountainous peaks.  Towns close to the chateau include Namur, set around a 19th century Citadel and benefiting from excellent restaurants and great bars, Dinant, Rochefort, St Hubert, Bouillon, which is renowned for fantastic canoeing along the River Lesse, and Vireux, a super choice for restaurants, street markets and shopping.

If you're a fishing fan, the Meuse is a fantastic river which holds some huge fish of all sorts of species. It is easily accessible along almost its entire length, all that is required is a French fishing license (Carte de Peche). There are plenty of backwaters and numerous creeks that are ideal for whitebait or carp. You can also discover the Meuse valley on the water, enjoying a boat tour!

For those who prefer more fast-paced activities, why not try paragliding! This is a very unique way to take in the beautiful countryside that Champagne has to offer and there are many sites nearby.

There are so many places to explore around the region: the Chateau and Abbee at Chimay, the Han caves, canoeing along the River Lesse and hiking in the woodlands. This makes Chateau Meuse a fantastic base from which to discover the region of Champagne.

Region

The people of Champagne have a lot to be proud about. Not only do they produce one of the world’s most celebrated fizzy drinks, the region was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2015, meaning it’s an even greater destination for foodies and culture vultures alike. But while it’s right at the heart of the country, the Champagne region offers more than an authentic drink – as our travel guide shows, there’s a little something for everyone if you’re thinking of booking one of our luxury villas and chateaux in Champagne.

Chateau Meuse is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is perfect to keep the kids active and out in the fresh air. You can enjoy activities such as hiking, horse-riding and tennis, and nothing can beat a picnic in the countryside and a long walk to see if you can encounter any of the many wildlife that lives close by!

Head to Terraltitude in Fumay for an adrenaline rush in the heart of the Ardennes! This adventure park boasts a zip wire over a kilometre long and 110 metres above the River Meuse, a 20 metre bungee jump and many treetop adventure trails. This park, spread over 5 hectares, truly has something for everyone, adults and children alike.

Under a 20-minute drive you can head to Haybes to try out another exciting way to see the stunning surroundings - by segway! These tours offer unrivaled views over the rivers and its banks and also provide a rush of adrenaline speeding over the bumps and down the hills.

For a change from the countryside, head to the town of Charleville-Mézières. This town has a fascinating history as it is strategically situated at the centre of the bustling trade routes between France and the countries of Northern Europe. It was founded in 1606 by an Italian prince, Charles de Gonzague and it was designed purely in the Italian baroque style. It is a city of art and history that, every two years, hosts the Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes (The International Festival of Puppetry). Explore the ramparts and Place Ducale to get little historians intrigued by this town.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
12 years

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?

The excellent location in a beautiful valley nearby the big river “La Meuse” and the unspoiled forest, I call it a little paradise.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
This valley has a long history. There are still signs of Ancient Rome on the property. It was long a self-supporting community with a Tannery, a farm and water mill. The tannery is the oldest building on the property. There was a fire in the main house and then the chateau was built  by “oranje Nassau” and once bought for the family of the mistress of Leopold II (Belgium king). They also added a chapel. It became a hunting castle with stables for the horses and carriages. That was the time people came here to relax and enjoy the beautiful nature.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?

Yes and there are several television programs recorded here.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...

  • Awesome property

    on 17/09/2023

The team was very helpful and it was easy to communicate with them. The property was awesome and everything worked out well.

  • Beautiful setting by the Meuse river

    on 09/10/2016

Very peaceful and restful stay. Hills, forest and river make it the perfect place with access to historic sites. Well equipped cottage with log fire and comfortable beds. Hot water all day. Many reasonable places to eat within easy travel. Good welcome and care throughout our stay. We say a great thank you to Oliver's Travel who generously helped us through a difficult problem, they together with Els and Leo at the Chateau.

  • Perfect location

    on 15/09/2016

Set in a beautiful location along the Messe river, this wonderful chateau and cottages provided the perfect setting for a large friends and family 50th birthday celebration. Even though there were nearly 50 people staying for a week, there was so much space, the outdoor area was used extensively as the weather was perfect. The kitchen did have plenty of crockery, glassware & utensils. This is a beautiful, tranquil part of France, well worth the time to visit for that special event.

  • Top notch!

    on 19/08/2016

We stayed in the château with a group of 16 people in celebration of my partners 50th birthday. We all loved the location, the tranquility, the house, and the very laid back atmosphere. The château was spacious, clean, with some really nice pieces of furniture, without pretending to be too posh. The owners were very helpful and friendly and they have done a great job with restoring this place. We definitely would come back, hopefully in the near future.

  • Fantastic Wedding in the Chateau followed by Week of Amazing Holiday!!

    on 14/05/2016

We celebrated our Wedding at Chateau Meuse and had the most fantastic, perfect wedding day!! Els our wedding planner made sure we had the perfect ceremony outside, followed by a beautiful reception, a fantastic dinner in the Marquee and we partied all night in the Party Barn! Everything was perfect. We stayed the whole week in the Chateau Meuse (whole site) with all our friends and family, and celebrated every day. The environment is absolutely stunning, perfect for walking, cycling and relaxing. The Chateau is mind-blowing, fantastic to stay there! And the "Honeymoon suite" was just fantastic, so romantic. We absolutely loved every minute of it and are so grateful to Els Robyn!!

  • Schitterend kasteeltje in mooie omgeving

    on 25/11/2015
