Gaze out towards organic vines from your gorgeous terrace and swimming pool at La Ferme Aux Vignes, an attractive Dordogne farmhouse set on the edge of a hamlet close to the market town of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande.

Just a 10-minute drive from the banks of the Dordogne, this is a perfect base for exploring this captivating part of south-western France. Step inside this characterful home and relax in the open plan lounge and dining area with doors opening to the lovely terrace with stunning views. Cook feasts in the well-equipped kitchen or outside on the barbecue, using locally sourced ingredients from a nearby market of course, then dine al-fresco with those wonderful vineyard and countryside views.

Sleeping up to 9 guests, there are four attractive double bedrooms and an extra room with a sofa-bed suited to a child or teen. Across this welcoming farmhouse, alongside an ambience of traditional charm, guests can expect modern touches such as reversible air-conditioning, a Smart TV with an Amazon firestick as well as DVDs, books and games, allowing everyone to spend quality time together. Outside, a table tennis means more family fun and the glorious swimming pool will delight all ages.

Bordering organic vines, arrange a tasting at the hamlet’s winery which produces several bio-dynamic reds, whites and rosés. Also close by, around a 5-minute drive away, is the highly regarded Château des Vigiers, home to a 27-hole golf course, spa, bistro and Michelin starred restaurant.

Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, only 8km by car, is a must on a Saturday morning with its beautiful market, one of the best in the region, whilst other atmospheric markets can be found in bastide towns such as Eymet, Duras, Issigeac, Villeréal and picture-perfect Monpazier.

Don’t miss the old town in Bergerac, also on the Dordogne, or head west to be enchanted by hilltop Saint-Émilion, yet another paradise for wine and history lovers alike.

You could even spend the day in or around Bordeaux with its fascinating architecture and wine heritage, or head further west towards the Atlantic coastline for a lunch of oysters and white wine by Arcachon Bay or to try a little surfing around the vast shores of the Médoc peninsula.

Around 8km south-east of the delightful market town of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, La Ferme Aux Vignes is in the Dordogne department of France, close to the Gironde border, under half an hour from the heart of Bergerac.

The house is located on the edge of a little hamlet and its open grounds border a large working vineyard - you may see the wine chateau’s owners working on their organic vines from time to time and of course wine tastings can usually be arranged.

There are a couple of good bakeries for fresh bread and pastries within a 10-minute drive - the nearest supermarket sits next door to one of them. Find plenty more shops in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (8km), a very picturesque bastide town on the banks of the Dordogne which is especially loved for its wonderful Saturday morning market, known to be one of the best in the region. Indeed, there’s an abundance of atmospheric Farmer’s markets across the area – the owners will provide information on where and when the best Dordogne markets take place.

Other bastide towns across this area include 13th century Eymet (21km) with its pretty arcaded houses and gorgeous Issigeac (31km), with its famous Sunday morning market. Perhaps combine Issigeac with Villeréal (48km), crossing over into the Lot-et-Garonne department, and don’t miss a trip to Monpazier (58km), officially classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.

Even closer to home, the highly regarded Château des Vigiers is less than a 5-minute drive away, home to a 27-hole golf course, high-end spa, excellent bistro and Michelin starred restaurant – of course, booking ahead is essential.

As well as beautiful walks, cycling trails and hikes across the region, you can hire canoes and kayaks along the Dordogne in places such as Sainte-Foy-la-Grande and Pessac-sur-Dordogne. Another way to appreciate the beauty of the Dordogne is by taking a boat trip from Bergerac where traditional Gabarres boats sail along the river.
Bergerac (22km) itself is a charming historic town to spend time in with some excellent restaurants - wine-lovers will be keen to visit the Maison des Vins or head to Château de Monbazillac just south of the town.

Heading west, the enchanting hilltop town of Saint-Émilion (40km) is a delight for history and wine lovers alike with its UNESCO World Heritage vineyards. The grand city of Bordeaux (75km) is another fine day out reached in around 90 minutes by car (or consider the train which takes just over an hour from Sainte-Foy-la-Grande).

Region

Experience the magnificence of the Dordogne River whilst staying close to Bergerac, a historic town with a fine reputation for its wine, gastronomy, history and art. What’s more, Bergerac is easily accessible with its own international airport and it is just over an hour from Bordeaux with TGV connections to Paris.

In the Périgord Pourpre and wonderfully located for reaching the Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde regions of south-western France, Bergerac is classified as a city of art and history. A stroll around Bergerac’s old town will be high on your itinerary – explore medieval cobbled lanes as you admire half-timbered houses, pretty squares as well as inviting shops and restaurants as you follow the fictional footsteps of Cyrano de Bergerac. On a Wednesday and Saturday morning, don’t miss the delightful market near the handsome Notre-Dame de Bergerac.

Sail along the Dordogne from Bergerac on board a traditional gabarre vessel or take a walk by the river’s edge before finding an idyllic spot for a picnic. Cycling enthusiasts will adore the voie verte from the Canal de Lalinde towards Mouleydier, Creysse and Bergerac, partly following the banks of the river. There are of course ample opportunities for canoeing along the Dordogne or hiking through the Périgord Pourpre’s forests, orchards and vineyards - the region’s natural beauty will captivate you with its mild climate and idyllic riverside scenery.

Wine lovers should visit the Château de Monbazillac, just south of Bergerac, or spend time sampling other wine appellations at vineyards and wine châteaux near the likes of Montravel, Pineuilh and Saussignac. Back to the charming town centre, taste a range of excellent wine at Bergerac’s Maison des Vins by the old harbour.

Beyond Bergerac, there are so many pretty places to discover. To the south-east is picture-perfect Issigeac and the bastide town of Beaumont-du-Périgord, both hosting enchanting weekly markets. Market lovers will also adore Sainte-Foy-la-Grande by the banks of the Dordogne, home to one of the Gironde’s most beautiful markets on a Saturday morning.

La Ferme Aux Vignes is an 8km drive from the charming and historic town of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande which lies on the banks of the Dordogne. Here you will find a little beach ideal for summer paddling as well as canoeing and kayaking opportunities.

Another way to appreciate the beauty of the Dordogne is by taking a trip on a traditional boat called a Gabarre which departs from Bergerac. Also close to Bergerac you will find other family-friendly activities such as go-karting, tree-top adventures, a waterpark and miniature boats on a small lake (Port Miniature).

Look out for the fantastic re-enactments of the Battle of Castillon which usually take place in the height of the summer on Friday and Saturday evenings, around half an hour away, just north of Castillon-la-Bataille.

As well as horse-riding opportunities in the region, cycling trails and beautiful walks across the landscapes of the Dordogne and Gironde, you could also spend the day exploring the great city of Bordeaux with its historic architecture, museums and riverside setting.

Heading even further west, venture towards the Atlantic coast with the vast sandy beaches, dunes, lakes and surfing spots of the Médoc peninsula such as Lacanau, reached in under two hours by car.

Owner Profile

When did you become the owner?
We acquired the property in April 2022.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
We were looking for something that was as comfortable as our family home and felt settled as soon as we stepped through the door. The interior layout and style immediately suited us and the view from the veranda was stunning as our early evening viewings extended into sunset. The proximity of the vineyard at Chateau le Payral and the relaxed atmosphere of the village were also instantly appealing.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The site was originally occupied by a much older farmhouse, the style of which has been replicated in the wood and stonework throughout giving the property period character without the constant need for period maintenance!

For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…

Must do?
Explore the ‘bastides’, especially on market days (the Sunday market in Issigeac is a particular favourite); kayak down the Dordogne; check out the bars and restaurants in Bergerac’s Centre Historique; drive out to St. Emilion and book a wine tasting somewhere.

Must eat?
You’re in duck country, so try it if it’s your thing. There’s also a local ‘noix’ cheese infused with walnuts which is also worth trying. If you’re up for an evening dining treat, book a table in advance at La Brucelière in Issigeac.

Must see?
Too many places to choose from (really!), but we would recommend checking out Chateau Monbazillac as it’s very close and would be a shame to miss – a tour of the Chateau and grounds followed by a glass of the estate’s wine is very reasonably priced.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
At the house, make sure you have a drink to hand on the veranda at sunset as the change can be spectacular. During the summer months, some of the neighbouring villages have weekly open-air cook outs for the whole community – the local wineries take turns pitching in with bottles for as little as €5. We had great fun mixing with the locals at events in Saussignac and Monbazillac in 2022. Finally… if you like your wine, why buy at the supermarket if you can contact Thierry and Isabelle at Chateau le Payral and buy direct from them! Their range is organic and very well priced, and their property’s a 30-second walk through the vines from the house…
