Set in 25 acres of glorious grounds, yet only 2km from Monpazier, one of France’s most beautifully preserved bastide villages, this historic château has been sensitively restored into a wonderful home in this mesmerising part of Dordogne.

The origins of the château date back to the 14th century with many early features still remaining although the present building is thought to date back the mid-16th to 17th century. The current owner has taken great pride in its careful restoration which can be seen by the original oak-beamed ceilings throughout, the antique chimneypieces in many rooms and the walnut cabinetry featured in the bar and in the library, both in the circular towers. The medieval stone staircase and original limestone curtain walls add to the historical ambience of this marvellous château.

Each of the six charming bedrooms has its own bath or shower room whilst there is ample space downstairs for convivial living whether drinking wine by the monumental fireplace, cooking up a feast in the well-equipped kitchen or dining by candle-light in the classic dining room. Despite the traditional and elegant style throughout, the château features high-tech facilities such as a Bang & Olufsen music system, Satellite TV featuring English-speaking channels, high-speed Wi-Fi and geo-thermal heating.

Outside, the heated swimming pool features Cahors limestone as well as the finest teak pool loungers in this magnificent landscaped setting. Dining al-fresco in the summer sun is a delight or enjoy leisurely barbecues as the day comes to an end and the stars fill the clear skies above you.

You are surrounded by 25 acres of glorious grounds featuring woods, pastures and meadows, giving the château a great sense of privacy with unspoilt views stretching far. Yet it’s only a five-minute drive, or leisurely 2km walk, into the 13th century village of Monpazier, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. An incredibly beautiful place, filled with national monuments, you will find some excellent restaurants, pretty artisan shops as well as a butchers, bakery and grocery store as well as the bustling market on a Thursday morning which has been going since 1294.

South of the Dordogne river, this area is enchanting and less touristy that other parts of the region further north. Idyllic villages such as Belves, Monflanquin and Beaumont-du-Périgord can be reached within half-an-hour whilst Sarlat and Bergerac are worthy of wonderful day-trips.

Explore some of the Dordogne’s most famous châteaux, discover troglodyte caves nearby or take a hot air balloon ride across the dazzling landscape. More adventurous guests will love the tree-top adventures at nearby Parc en Ciel, set in 16 acres of woodland or you may prefer a quieter pace just canoeing along the Dordogne before enjoying lunch in one of the pretty villages along the river.

The setting of Château Beau Village really does offer something for everyone whether you are looking to relax in beautiful historic surroundings or make the most of this fascinating part of southern Dordogne.

  • The impressive medieval staircase has stone steps which are slightly uneven in places
  • Access is partly via an unsurfaced forest road

This home is a part of our Great Value and Heritage Collection!

This is a historic home, and as such:

  • It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

Surrounded by 25 acres of pastures and forests, with a kilometre-long driveway, this is a glorious location yet you are only a five-minute drive (or leisurely walk) to the bastide village of Monpazier, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages.

Monpazier is one of France’s most beautifully preserved villages and dates back to the 13th century. Here you will find some excellent restaurants, cafes and artisan shops as well as a butchers, bakery and a couple of small grocery stores (larger supermarkets can be found near Beaumont or Villeréal).

The original market hall and the arcades around the edge of the village square are particularly impressive as well as the range of historical houses across the village. Indeed, many of the buildings across the village are classed as ‘national monuments’ for their historical beauty and importance. Thursday morning is the time to visit the bustling Dordogne market in Monpazier and there are also some lovely festivals taking place in the summer.

If you are staying in July and August then don’t miss one of the atmospheric night markets in nearby Belves (15km), also listed one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. On a Wednesday evening in the summer food stalls and tables are set up around the main halle and you can choose what you wish to eat in a fun and convivial setting. Furthermore, the main market takes place on a Saturday morning throughout the year.

Other idyllic Dordogne villages to explore include delightful Issigeac (30km), beautiful Monflanquin (25km) and Beaumont-du-Périgord (17km) or explore some of the archetypal villages along the Dordogne such as Domme (40km), La Roque-Gageac (36km) and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (30km) with its magnificent château nearby.

Not forgetting the famous town of Sarlat (47km) with its maze of medieval narrow streets, lovely squares and amazing restaurants specialising in cuisine of the Perigord or west to beautiful Bergerac (45km) with its medieval architecture, narrow streets of boutiques and great restaurants as well as the unmissable Maisons des Vins.

This is of course the land of famous châteaux with so many to visit across the region, including Château de Biron (10km) within a 15-minute drive. You can also discover troglodyte caves in and around surrounding villages, taste local wines in nearby vineyards and even take a hot air balloon ride across the magnificent landscapes around.

Those looking for activity can hire canoes along the Dordogne river or cycle or hike in wonderful surroundings. More adventurous guests or those with kids will love Parc en Ciel (13km), set in 16 acres of woodland. The River Lede runs through the park and there is also a small lake, tree-top adventure area, a natural swimming pool, mini-golf and a children’s playground.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
15 years ago, I purchased it in 2003. I then undertook a very major restoration programme between 2003 and 2006 and was able to occupy the chateau from 2006 onwards. The swimming pool was built in 2008. The former owners began restoration back in the later 1990’s, so it took 8 years to restore in all.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The beautiful stone, the tower overlooking the open countryside, the peace, privacy, unspoilt views and the proximity to the ancient village (unseen and unheard from the chateau)

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The Coat of arms of the owners. The origins of Château date from the 14thC.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
- Martin Barre, the lead guitarist of famous 60s/70s rock band Jethro Tull, was a guest at a party I held at the chateau.
- My late father, stayed here many times. He was the QC that represented the Beatles against their manager, and Paul McCartney against the rest of the Beatles when the band split up. He was later elevated to become Lord Justice of Appeal.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

- Go down the road to Monpazier, one of the most beautiful medieval plus beaux villages in the whole of France. Built in 1294 and totally unspoilt this small town has many restaurants, shops and a well-known local market day held every Thursday morning throughout the year (not to be missed)
- Canoe down the Dordogne River (Canoes Roquegeoffre. suitable for families)
High wire tree/rope climbing at  Parc en Ciel:  a specialist centre at Lacapelle-Biron, suitable for different levels of expertise

Really eat?
- Foie Gras taken with a sip of Monbazillac sweet wine – both local to the area
- "Saucisson Sec", a French variety of thick, dry cured sausage, whiixh can be found in the local butcher in Monpazier

Really see?
- Chateau de Bion, monumental castle formerly owned by the Duc de Biron – both he and his wife were guillotined during the French Revolution, despite having commanded a large part of the Revolutionary Army
- Chateau de Milandes - formes home of Josephine Baker, the famous American/French cabaret star

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
- Get to Market Day in Monpazier on Thursdays before 10:00 to get convenient parking
- Try the recommended butcher if you want local meat prepared the traditional way, all sourced from farms close by

  • Amazing stay!

    on 21/08/2019

I just wanted to compliment you on the stunning Chateau - the grounds, the Chateau, the decor, the furniture and the facilities - all amazing. Bertran was a very hospitable host and helped make our stay very memorable. We are now seriously searching for our own Chateau - a real inspiration!

  • It exceeded our expectations!

    on 03/08/2019

From the first moment we saw the Chateau, we were amazed. The chateau is beautiful. We spent lots of time at the chateau enjoying the pool and the grounds, we had good fun and laugh in the evenings. This gave us some very epic memories.

  • 5 glorious days!

    on 13/06/2019

We had the most wonderful time and loved every moment. The Chateau has been restored so stunningly and none of us were anticipating the beauty of the surrounding landscape - such a magical spot. You were very right in saying that you truly cannot beat the location; the proximity to Monpazier made the entire weekend even more enjoyable and we enjoyed many morning coffees in the square and afternoon aperitifs before dinner. We actually became fascinated with the history of the Chateau, the town and the surrounding area... what a beautiful corner of the world! The weather held up for the majority of the weekend too, so we were throughly able to enjoy the pool and the lawn garden. Bertrand was super and extremely helpful, and we had everything we could possibly need and were beyond comfortable in the house. We had a rather strict rota going on with cooking and cleaning among the group, so we endeavoured to leave everything as we found it.

  • We highly recommend!

    on 30/08/2018

Chateau Beau Village was ideal for our group which spanned three generations. There’s something for everyone in the area!

  • Perfect Stay!

    on 25/07/2018

Everything we wanted as a base to explore the beautiful area of the Périgord. Being close to Monpazier proved to be a real bonus.

  • Amazing Place!

One of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed in - tranquil, yet close to all of the local attractions. The chateau is uniquely historic, but with all the necessary mod cons
