Location
About the surrounding area of Chateau Des TrufflesChâteau des Truffles is the perfect location for your holiday or rendezvous, whether you just want to get away from it all and become immersed in another part of hidden France, or you want to be busy discovering all that the Perigord region of the Dordogne can offer. It is known as the valley of 1000 châteaux with endless pretty medieval villages, fine wines, truffles, local markets and spectacular valleys and rivers. Both the Vezere and the Dorgogne rivers offer great kayaking, canoeing and unparalleled views of the countryside.
From the château there is spectacular walking and much much more. Within a 10-minute drive there are tennis courts, golf, paint-balling, go-karts and canoeing.
Further afield there are interesting villages, gardens and local markets to visit. Don't forget the vast number of UNESCO listed sites of prehistoric interest within the valleys of the Dordogne and Vezere rivers. Cro-Magnon, for example, was discovered at Les Eyzies de Tayac just 15km away.
The local restaurants and auberges come highly recommended for lunches and dinners serving regional specialties as well as high-end dining. The house with its gardens offer a special place to take time out, relax and rejuvenate.

Region
The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.
The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.
The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Owner Profile
How long have you owned the property?
Our company purchased the property in early 2019.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
We fell in love with this property due to the beautiful location nestled in between a valley within 184 acres of woodland and a stunning 4 acre lake. The long history of the building makes it one of the most famous landmarks in the local area.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
It was originally built as a hunting lodge for the French nobility. Around 1730 it was transformed into a ironmaster's Forge and is said to have fabricated cannon balls for Napoleon’s Army.
For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…
Must do?
We have over 140 UNESCO sites locally (all within 40km radius) from cave dwellings to Châteaux to pre-history museums
Must eat?
We offer a continental breakfast service in-house at a supplement (please ask for details)
If you prefer to cook for your family/guests, we have daily local fresh produce markets
We can arrange a chef to come into the Forge and provide lunches and dinners – this must be pre-arranged with our managers.
Must see?
The Dordgone region is steeped with history and there are plenty of activities to keep you and your guests entertained, from Hot air ballooning, wine tasting, canoeing down the beautiful rivers or local music festivals, it will not disappoint. Or for those of you who just want to relax we can arrange spa treatments and yoga sessions in-house, with an outdoor swimming pool, badminton, table tennis, fishing on the lake, boules/pétanque, sauna and woodland walks.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
It is essential to bring some cash in Euros as many of the services here (massages, yoga, chef, taxi etc) and local markets only accept cash payments.
If you would like to go out as a large group for lunches and evening meals during high season, we would strongly recommend that you book your table in advance, please ask our managers if you need help with this.

Paradise in Perigord
We enjoyed our week enormously. The property accommodates a large party (we needed all ten bedrooms) but retains elegance and intimacy. It feels like a grand family home and not a vast and faded pile. The interiors are in excellent condition. We had wonderful weather so spent most of our time outside, in the spacious and beautiful gardens. Jennifer, the property manager was very helpful and friendly. Overall, the Chateau des Truffles provides an Englishman's dream of a French country house.
